Melbourne Airport Long Term Parking Advice

Hi OzB family.

As a true OzBargainer, looking for some advice on long term parking at Melbourne airport.

So, we'll be away for 3 weeks and would like to know if a car can be safely parked for this much duration at the airport and is there any hack to get this much time for a discount?

I haven't parked at the airport before so not sure how far the parking is from the international terminal, how to reach there after parking and how long will it take so that we keep that time in consideration when leaving home.

Any suggestions will be appreciated. TIA

Why wouldn't you lock your car up at home and take an uber to and from the airport? It'll probably work out cheaper… (unless you're coming in from the countryside or something and don't know anyone closer who has a house that you can leave your car at).

Our flight is at 6:30 AM. We are a family of 5 so looking at options so that we don't have to bother anyone at an odd time to drop us at the airport. With 5 people and lots of luggage not sure how uber will work at 3:00 AM in the morning.

Odd time on return too… Thinking it might be much convenient to fill up the SUV with our luggage and just park. Similarly on our return we can get back home easily without hassling anyone.

How far do you have to go? If you're taking an Uber (or taxi), you're not "bothering" anyone. That's their job and you're paying them for it. They'll be glad to get a call at that time rather than just wait around and not get called. Airport parking is usually so damn expensive. For a couple of days it might be okay, but three weeks is a long time to pay for. It'll be in the hundreds.

That should be fine. I did it. The car is safe, but will be dusty.
Pay the undercover terminal parking for convenience.
    Or
an outdoor long term parking for cheaper option. (you can drop off your luggages at terminal with your family taking care of them, then go by yourself to outdoor parking area, then take bus or possibly walk to terminal)

    • Undercover long term terminal parking is in the same building as short term parking terminal. Just 5 mins walk.

When working at the airport, always noticed a few cars needing a jump start at the long term section. Have their number handy if you need some help (if it's still offered) when you get back from your trip, or RACV

There are lots of 3rd party long term parking companies like Jetaway that are much cheaper than on-site parking. It's usually about 5-10 minutes from the airport, but they have free shuttles.

    • Last few times I check those off-airport parking isn't much cheaper than long term car park at the airport itself. In fact it might even be more expensive for less than a week parking. Don't think you can get cheaper than $12 a day don't have to worry about the shuttle bus not available or waiting to collect more passengers to make the trip worthwhile.

I can't give any recommendations, other than if you do go via the parking route,** I'd be looking at disconnecting the battery of your car (just the negative terminal is fine) if you're leaving for 3 weeks.** Make sure the manual lock also works (nothing electrical works if you've disconnected the battery ofc)

Or, just get (or use your existing) roadside cover in case your battery is flat

If arriving/departing at odd times, use the airport long term park rather than one of the third party businesses off site. Buses always running and every few minutes at popular times. With 5 people plus luggage etc, it is very easy to jump on the car park large transfer buses rather than some of the third party ones that need you to call to let them know you are ready, then wait around etc. Mot of the times the off site ones aren't considerably cheaper either.

I would advice that you do not take advise from random people on the web.
There unlikely to have you're best interests in they're mind.

Done it many times, no issues in the long term car park. Standard car parking rules apply, leave NOTHING out in sight, no coins, no chargers, no nothing. Don't give them a single reason to break into your car. People looking for money will break a window for a 10c piece. They don't care it costs you $100+ to fix. This applies to any carpark really, long term or even 1 hour.

  • Or get a solar trickle charger that works :D

    • definitely don't get one that doesn't work

  • If doing long term carpark that requires a shuttle and travelling with people, best to drop passengers and baggage at arrival terminal first. Then circle back to carpark and take the shuttle yourself, easier for yourself and your passengers.

I'm trying to work this out right now too!

Family of 4, going for a trip in April for 2 weeks. An Uber from our place to the airport is about $105 one way -cry- so about $210 return

If I do car parking in T4 (its an undercover walk from there to all the other terminals anyway) I can get undercover parking for $199, but using a JQ10 coupon code and it brings it down to $179.10

The other outer lying airport car parks are roughly about $10-$15 cheaper.

Given the convenience of driving our own car both ways I'm going for the undercover terminal parking
