For scanning documents (vs Colour images etc) then why not look for a printer that has a sheet feeder.
There is an HP at Officeworks for $98

Features wired networking, 250-sheet paper tray, 35 sheet ADF and more. Print from anywhere with HP ePrint.
IIRC there is a jump point between the simple, slow, cheap, page scanners - and the scanners that can slurp through industrial amounts of content in a reasonable time. At a minimum you are talking double sided at once, and hardware processing.
Try http://www.diybookscanner.org/ for a hacker approach to the problem that can manage real books/docs.
I have one of these

Cheaper from MSY …. I think I price matched at OW and got it for about $120
Scans ok, runs off usb, so is very portable…. will split files ….ie three photos scanned at once will be recognised as 3 separate files. Obviously it has no feeder, so might not suit you….. but for occasional, low volume scanning, it's been pretty good for me
