All of our Kava products come from Vanuatu, specifically from farmers on Pentecost Island. They have been thoroughly tested for quality and safety, and are known for their high strength. High strength does mean the kava tastes a bit more bitter but provides a higher level of relaxation. So please use it in moderation & do not operate heavy machinery.

As for dosage, it's up to each individual, but a general guide could be 10-50g per session per person. You could start with 50g for the first time, and then adjust to 10-30g per session as you build your tolerance. Strangely enough, Kava has a reverse tolerance effect, so over your first few tastings the relaxation effect becomes stronger.

Use the code "JANLIMITED" at checkout to get your 30% discount today!

How make drinks or 'doses' does 500g make?

    • Dosage starts at ~5g, but it's up to individuals how much they want\don't want.

    • It is variable depending on the 'strength', but the site has this recipe:
      - 30g of kava / person
      - 400ml water / person
      - 200ml milk / person
There are other recipes for small doses and for big doses.

The available data indicates that traditional kava beverage prepared from the root has a long tradition of safe use in the South Pacific Islands. It is compositionally different from kava products prepared by extraction using organic solvents. While excessive consumption of the traditional kava beverage may lead to adverse health effects, such as kava dermopathy

    • Yes and i believe that it's more for excessive consumption over time for that really. Similar to consumption of alcohol over time!

      • One should not drink alcohol either. Or smoke. If there are any concerns for their health. Everyone knows about negative effects of that, unlike kava.

    • +1

Would it be more accurate to say that excessive ongoing consumption may lead to adverse health effects, such as kava dermopathy.
There are positives as well from drinking kava, particularly when compared to alcohol.

I was the one posting similar comment under the deal before. I ended up being downvoted. Generally I find on ozbargain people downvote you to put you out of sight whenever you critisize anything.

      • +2

Don't let that stop you if you believe in what you are saying.

      • +2

If we don't put a warning out on all the alcohol posts, then there's no need to put a warning on the Kava posts imho. Like anything you consume people should be doing their due diligence and researching the product before purchasing.

        • There are warnings on every bottle and in fine print on the websites. But alcohol is probably a couple million times more widespread and known.

        • +2

People seem to think it's their civil duty to warn about everything. From the perils if non-certified power strips to button batteries.

A balanced, "you.might want to be careful…", Or " some if the side effects from excessive consumption can be" Is fine, but some of the alarmist warnings from zealots is unnecessary.

      • Criticism is fine in my opinion, as long as it is balanced.
As doobey1231 says, there are lots of products (e.g. alcohol) for which we know can have adverse health effects.

For kava dermopathy, I found this (more comprehensive) info:
"…kava dermopathy only forms in people who drink a lot of kava over long periods of time. It doesn’t happen after just one session or even several dozen sessions. It takes years of near-daily use for kava dermopathy to set in…Once kava consumption is stopped or heavily reduced, the condition will go away on its own."

So why introduce yet another one¿

I recall reading that Kava is basically a mild anaesthesia.

If that’s the case, it’s a hard no from me.

          • @FredAstair: Yet another one what?

Kava is not for everyone. Alcohol is not for everyone. Marijuana is not for everyone. Some prescription drugs are not for everyone.
            People can make a choice.

            • @GG57: Heroin.
Can they make that choice too¿

              Driving not wearing a seatbelt¿
              How about this one¿

              Etc, etc..

              It’s not always about choice.
Restriction of things that can be detrimental to health are created from facts and rationals.

Yes.. some are from government greed, etc..
But I don’t see how introducing, something that appears to be negatively impacting those living on islands where this already is considered a norm, into Australian life has any real benefits towards health or personal choice.

              • -1

@FredAstair: Heroin is a choice, of course. Same with driving without a seatbelt.

Do you have any specific evidence of health impacts from the use of kava?
Kava has been, and continues to be, an integral part of life in the Pacific island countries. Long lived formal ceremony traditions, through to 'kava huts' (similar to pubs) with lots of socialisation and singing, through to street-side sellers.

Why should our choices be limited?

                  • @Musiclover: Great information; people should have this awareness to feed into their choices.
Let's not get into the similar information that is available for other legal drugs, such as alcohol or tobacco, even caffeine.
One of the benefits of legalising marijuana would be the wider availability of similar info for that drug.

I'm yet to see any reason why people's choices should be limited though.

                    • +1

@GG57: The fact that tobacco or liquor is harmful does not justify the use of other drugs. There are no good drugs. It is a very delicate and even a philosophical question of why people need drugs in their life in general.
Another question that you raised “why people’s choices should be limited” is a little philosophical as well, but lies in a more practical plain. A simple answer to that would be one's freedom ends where another's begins. Why should tax payers be paying out of Medicare funds for complex and very epensive lung cancer treatments of smokers? Why should little children or pregnant women be subjected to passive smoking at bus stops or other public places? Or even – why should someone be killed by a person affected by drugs? Or their property be destroyed or stolen by drug induced criminals? Why should women and children be suffering by liquor induced domestic violence?

                      • @Musiclover: Are you proposing that Australia should ban tobacco and liquor (both of which would appear to have much more significant impacts on others than kava does)?

                        • @GG57: Is Kava banned?

                            • @GG57: Well, it is not discriminated against then.
As for my suggestions - I am not suggesting anything, just saying that a freedom of individual above all makes a dysfunctional society.

                              • @Musiclover: So, looping around, I'm still trying to understand why you are being specifically critical of this bargain, or of this product?

                                • @GG57: I have no idea how good this bargain is I do not buy kava.
As for this product - I am not critical of it, just feel that people may think it is some kind of a relaxing herbal tea. "To speak the truth is easy and pleasant". It is just an interesting read of how it affects health.
If someone posts a TV deal and you say that it's display is not as good as others no one feels offended, but if you speak about scientifically proven effects of kava - you are an annoying alarmist because your prevent the fulfillment of an ostrich policy and impede on people’s free choices, just like government with their evil plans to vaccinate people, right?

                                  • @Musiclover: To summarise:
                                    - you have no idea how good this bargain is
                                    - you don't buy kava (I'm not aware if you have ever tried kava)
                                    - you aren't critical of the product
                                    - the product is legal to buy, sell and use
                                    - you think that some people may misinterpret what the product is

It is just an interesting read of how it affects health.

Again, it doesn't always affect the health of the consumer. It certainly may, but it is not a definitive impact for all consumers.

                                    • +1

                                      @GG57:

it doesn't always affect the health of the consumer.

If you are not aware, this is exactly how it always works. There is no product that "always" affect health of the consumer, unless it is calcium cyanide in big enough quantities.
It always just increases your risks of certain health problems.

                                      • @Musiclover:

It always just increases your risks of certain health problems.

Does it though? From one of the sites you provided a link to:
In small doses, the effects of kava include muscle relaxation, sleepiness and feelings of wellbeing. However, long-term use of kava can lead to a range of health problems, including malnutrition, weight loss and apathy.

                                        So, not always.

                                        • +1

@GG57: It feels like I am sucking eggs, but anyway - risk increase means exactly that. It can lead to problems. Not always, of course does it guarantee a problem. Just bigger likelihood of such.

                                      • @Musiclover: So true..
                                        ‘Dosage makes the poison’

                        • @GG57: I dont It.
And I think you know that already.
We’ve already seen what prohibition did to America.

                  • @Musiclover: Thanks. Saved me doing it.

      • Bingo

  • How high relaxed do you get? I've never tried this.

    • It would depend on how much you have, and your own levels of tolerance.
      Just like everything else.

      • Never mind. I looked at the "making kava" page, and it's too much work. And it's $149 RRP for 500g which is ~17 doses.

Sounds like valium with extra steps.

        • It's up to the user how far to go with it - for example Australia's former deputy PM had a little too much one night: https://www.afr.com/politics/federal/how-a-bowl-of-kava-floo…

As far as steps to make it, the simplest is to blend it with water & milk for 5 min.

Then pour through a strainer and drink.

The hard part is you have to agitate the powder to get the active ingredient out of it. Blender works amazingly.

  • Urk, bad memories…

    • Might be worth trying again for some good ones!!

  • Kava
Kava comes from the root of the pepper plant piper methysticum.

It is used in traditional ceremonies and for social occasions in many places in the Pacific Islands.

In the NT, Aboriginal people make a kava drink by mixing the dry, powdered root with water.

The strength of the kava varies greatly on the plant form and how it is prepared.

    What's legal
Under the Kava Management Act 1998, you can possess kava in the Northern Territory (NT) if the amount is less than 2 kilograms.

Read section 4 of the Act.

    What’s not legal
You cannot possess kava in amounts of more than 2 kilograms.

It is also illegal to do any of the following with kava in the NT:

    import
    sell
    supply
    cultivate
    manufacture and produce.
Read more about kava rules in the Act.

    Changes to national law
Recent changes to national law have opened avenues for kava to be reintroduced commercially in the NT. But it is still illegal to sell or import kava in the NT.

  • Value Pack (500g High Strength Kava + Kava Specific Strainer Bag) - $149 down to $104.3

500g High Strength Kava Bag - $125 down to $87.5

    What's the difference between these two? Just the $12 bag? Because the $125 500g cava + $12 bag - discount= $95.90

    • Apologies we messed up in this post! The Value pack for 500g is actually only $130 on the website now. So it goes down to $91 with the discount.

The post won't let me update it now, unfortunately. But the difference between the 500g bag and the value pack, is that the value pack comes with the strainer bag at a further discount since it's bundled and posted together.

  • Cool, i think I'll grab the 1kg value bundle for $161. I did express shipping, will that go out today?

  • Medical cannabis is cheaper & I daresay more potent / effective. Get the Spectrum gel caps & work out with your doctor the right mix of THC and/or CBD.
