Going to cancel my amex Explorer before next 450 cycle .. is there an alternative Amex that you can get while I wait out the 18 month cycle and doesn't effect that?

Another option is to transfer a fee AMEX free card. You'll likely get an Upgrade offer back to the Explorer within 3-6 months.
