Best Bang for Buck OBD2 Scan Tool under $100

Been looking around for a Diagnostic Scan Tool and there are lots to choose from. I've never owned one, will under $100 get me something decent?

Depends on your vehicle. I had an ELM 327 for my Holden VE. But I also have a OBD MX (I got one when they were on Kickstarter] and its pretty good.

But now I have a Ford Ranger PX3 (not the latest Next Gen one) and I have a FORScan tool which is bloody awesome.

Also, it will depend on what you are going to do with the device whether its just clearing codes or seeing LIVE car stats like this.

After watching your last linked YouTube video I can confirm that your indicators work. 😉

What do you normally monitor on UHF?

      • “Herherherher… 5kW and it’s not even doing anyfink…”

Um, engine is switched on and running??

What do you normally monitor on UHF?

I am an Amateur Radio Operator, so I had a few radios in this car. In my Ranger, I just have the two. VHF and UHF.

  • I've got this one: https://caristaapp.com/adapter $65

You get the app free for one month so that gives you time to do any changes you want (turn off seat belt warning noises etc). Then you only need the app for 'extra functions' if you want to.

Check car compatibility here, it will give a list of supported vehicles and what functions you can access on each.

    • I have Carista too. Does the job!

  • These cheapies work fine to muck around on, can get a free app on android/iphone
can check codes/clear codes, you can see engine stats

  • I have the predecessor of this one and it's fine:

  • I personally own this OBD scan tool, I bought this one recently when the brake light switch of my Mazda 3 went kaput, it helped me with the error code and I was then able to order the appropriate part and fix the problem.

  • what are you wanting to use it for ?

reflashing? or code reading? digital display linking of performance?

    • Reflashing and digital display linking performance for a subaru and maybe a toyota? Any ideas?

      • the ones listed above by berserkk would suit that.

I have one which I pair with Torque for digital display.

for refreshing then pairing with laptop.

i've a ford focus that needs its gearbox ECU reflashed with FORScan.

I went with the Veepeak https://www.amazon.com.au/Veepeak-OBDCheck-Bluetooth-Diagnos…

Haven't had any problems with it.

  • Really depends on your car.. The generic ones will give you some nice basic information, but may not give specific codes for your car so worth hunting around for one that is known to work well with your car. Originally bought a Kinchrome one, it threw a bunch of codes that made no sense. Recently purchased the forscan cable and app to use on my Ford and am seeing more specific codes relating to the issues I am having.

  • I had the Advancer AD10 for a while now
I went looking to see what deal I could find for you
It looks like I bought it off eBay last time & it has now been super-seeded by Advancer AD20; so I bought 1

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/364071864204?hash=item54c45fc78c…

It worked out to be $33.08 in Oz money
You leave the thing in your OBDII port all the time & use your mobile to access it
It has trip meter, fuel mileage, error codes, it helps you work out error codes, it has lifetime warranty, it has a dash (I just use the speedo), it does a full vehicle diagnostic, it does a performance test (which I did not bother on my old Honda). You can just Duck Duck Go the thing & go through the specs. I have a few of these as I used to be a mechanic. I also have one of these:-
    https://www.scantool.net/obdlink-mxp/
but haven't used it much over the years

I would get the AD20 in my opinion
p.s. when you look at the AD20 on eBay at that link, visit the store and see the other goodies :p
