What's Your Excuse When at an Interview for Another Job?

I work in an office and have decided to start looking elsewhere. The problem is, any interview I go to will most likely occur during business hours (while I should be at work)

I had a look around the forums but couldn't find a similar thread so I wanted to ask, what do you do? How do you explain your absence while interviewing for another job?

"I have a personal appointment". That's it. That's all they need to know.

Yeah it could be a doctor appointment, could be your kid's piano recital, they don't need to know the details

Haven't had an interview in 10 years but I would usually schedule them as early as possible and just say I'll be late as I have a dentist/doctors appointment.

These days I would just WFH on the day of the interview as it's easier to hide.

This would be my preferred method, but not being able to WFH is a big reason I'm looking elsewhere

Will you be using your current employer as a reference?

    • Not my current boss but co-workers

If I did use my boss, you'd absolutely have to give them a heads up

      • As an aside, many businesses will ask for the bosses reference - right at the end of the process. So effectively you have the job - but just want to hear from the boss.

        • Yep, found this the hard way, since it was part of the on-boarding requirement, I had to phone my boss which I haven't seen for 10 years just to ask him as my reference, wasn't able to give my current boss' number as we're not in good terms.

The fact that you're asking to me suggests that you might not have the strongest of poker faces.

If so, I'd suggest taking leave for the interview such that it doesn't play on your conscience or the like.

I have an employee that is honest to the Nth degree such that he'll even put in leave time for spending 30mins to go to the post office during work time. I tell him not to tell me these things and just go.

Time to start wearing that suit on a more regular basis so it isn't as obvious on interview days, and wearing your jacket to go get coffee/lunch.

    • +2

ha! I used to always mix it up knowing that I wouldn't ever need an excuse to be in a suit when interview time came. Some days in tshirt and jeans, other days in suits.

  • Say you have a court appearance

and if you get the job, say you got done and you'll be "going away for a while"

      • boss: okay…will you be back or no?

That reminds me of those days before seek.com where they handed out copies of the City Weekly at the CBD train stations (I don't know if it was just in Sydney or whether other cities had it too) on Thursdays. I'd often walk around and see that lots of people have left those open in the job section on their desks!

  • Tell them you got into the finals for the Annual Truth Telling competition two towns over. And no they cannot come along and support you. Yes you will accept cash donations towards your training/expenses.

Tell them you're going for an Interview.
If you're valued by your existing employer, all of a sudden the flexibility and pay rise offers start flowing.

    • Yes, make them sweat.

"Hey I've got an interview for job, I'll be online after 12 pm."

  • Depends on your current situation, backup plan and the size of your nutz.
If you can, then tell you current boss you are off to a job interview :-) happy days
