Is There Any Way to Delete My Auspost Account?

Hi everyone,

I’m at my wits end trying to figure out how to delete my Auspost account. Since the Optus data breach incident, i’m trying to remove all my personal info from the internet/companies.

Apparently, Australian Post Office has my mobile number, date of birth and home address info. I logged onto my Auspost account trying to change those details but it wouldn’t let me since the account has been ‘verified’. I couldn’t recall ever verifying my Auspost account except for the few times that I shown them my driver’s licence to collect my parcel at my local post office. Oh, I also recently got my passport renew last Christmas. Clearly they have been collecting info about me without me knowing. Currently, to make any changes to my Auspost account, I would need to bring my latest updated ID to the post office to do so. WTH?

There isn’t any option on Auspost website to delete my auspost account. WTH? Isn’t this illegal? Does anyone know of a way to delete my Auspost account? Thanks in advance.

Also, just a quick question for those who works for the Australian Post Office, can the delivery driver see my phone number and date of birth info on their hand-held scanning device? Thanks again.

I'm sure Auspost will post out some paperwork, you then post it back… and so on it goes…

Best advice would be to contact support and ask them to delete it for you. Maybe start with live chat and see what they say:

I think you need to see a Doctor..you sound well paranoid

  • Contact AusPost and ask if deleting your online account will affect parcel delivery or not ?

Ive heard you need to remove your letter box from the front of your house first, and the next time the postie rides past this is logged in their device, and then the delete button will be visible in your online account settings

I can confirm. This is what worked for me.

Third this, this is the only thing that worked for me. Postie was a good bloke too , confirmed deletion after on his scan-o-tron unit

I get valuable stuff posted to me, that way Australia post ALWAYS forgets my delivery address and name..expensive but job done

Google 'letter box delete hack for renters'.

        Plenty of resources out there.

A simpler way would be just changing the number on the letterbox. Change it to 276 Smith St and they'll never find you.

  • You probably verified via an email link when setting up the account.
I can’t remember if it was fair trading or the ACCC that said something along the lines of ‘subscriptions need to be as easy to cancel as they are to setup’, so if they aren’t they can be reported, you may have to dig a little for the correct info.

An Auspost account is not a subscription though.

Are you not subscribing to a service when making an account?

Just because they have not provided a way to do it virtually doesn’t make it illegal

As they’ve said under https://auspost.com.au/privacy call Customer Contact Centre on 13 POST (13 76 78) between 9.00am and 5.00pm EST Monday to Friday

    Report back

    • nah call post office is like pulling ur teeth out
easier to just take a course in hacking
then hacking aus post and deleting ur record

Lol. Easier to say do something is easier than doing it yourself

The unfortunate truth is that the current privacy act doesn’t allow for the “right to be forgotten”. It only extends as far as the “right to access and update all your personally identifiable information”.

This is such an outdated view, and almost encourages companies to hoard people’s data that they don’t need anymore - making data breaches so much worse when they do happen.

The latest round of recommendations put to the government (in 2019/2020) expanded these rights but privacy took a massive backseat with Covid.

You’re 100% right, this should be super simple and a legal requirement for any company that accepts data from an Australian citizen

Note - not a lawyer, dyor

  • I have an account. I definitely did not put in my DOB and it still remains empty. It only send you an email/sms if it matches your email address or mobile number and postal address.

I too have been trying to delete a lot of my old unused accounts, and some companies really piss me off with their processes

Just last week, it took 12 emails to get an account deleted, despite them telling me it was done multiple times. First time they said they don’t do it, and I needed to contact someone. Then the first time they said it was deleted, I could still log in. Then they said wait 15mins, after 15mins I could still log in.

This incremented until 24 hours, when I would finally get a no account exists message. Then they had the nerve to send me a follow up survey asking how they’ve done!!

  • Please post update OP.
Australia Post has one of the most valuable address database in Australia. Many large corporations: Banks, NRMA etc verify their lists against it - it is valuable and jealousy guarded asset.
    Alternative approaches:
    - Complain to the the Postal Industry Ombudsman
    - Complain to the Federal Privacy Commissioner
    - FOI request for all personally held information including but not limited communications, log files, metadata; and then submit notice to correct your personal information held by the organisation.

    • Many large corporations: Banks, NRMA etc verify their lists against it

Is cute you think AusPost is the supplier of addresses to organisations.

      https://data.gov.au/data/dataset/geocoded-national-address-f…

Back in the days, telstra holds largest address database through landline system.

      • 'Cute' dripping with condescension.
Since you are so intellectually pedantic quote me correctly, I wrote 'verify' not 'supplier'.
As it seems you are a patronising fool, best to let you gloat in your ignorance.

It's too late, your date of birth, phone number and address are likely already somewhere on the internet.

Really the only one of any concern is your date of birth (I mean, it's Australia Post. They're going to have your address). But that's definitely already out there.

I've been through this before and there are two options:
    1) If you are on ios, the app has a delete account option in the settings page
    2) Contact auspost as others have suggested above

I deleted my account through the app and after pressing delete, an auspost agent rung me to make sure that I really wanted my account deleted, then it was deleted within a week.

    • Thanks, I have Android, and your comment prompted me to check the app on the phone, where it has the delete option too.

Madly infuriating that it isn't available on the website, but is on the phone, FFS. I can't upvote you because the comment is more than 30 days old, but consider this an upvote. ➕
