Critique My AM5 ITX Build before I Pull The Trigger

Hi all,

I'm about to purchase some ram for my AM5 ITX build. I'm keen for the OzBargain crew to sense check my build.

So far, thanks to you beautiful people; I have acquired:

Case: NZXT H1 V2 Case ($299);
GPU: Powercolour 6800 XT ($840);

I'm close to purchasing this ram

Looks like a decent speed, decent price and is AMD Expo compatible - I was initially looking for a 64GB kit to 'future proof' but it's too expensive.

Asus X670E-I Wi-Fi - Whilst all I need is the B650, for not much more I can go the X670… I have been waiting for the price to go sub $600 but it hasn't moved much in a while. (Though seems they were $900 on release!)

CPU: 7600 or 7600X - There is probably $20 difference between the two - With an overclock the 7600 basically equals the 7600x in performance, but draws less power - So I'm thinking on going with the 7600 on that basis. Thoughts?

SSD: No idea what I'm after here - any advice appreciated.

Looking to rustle up the remaining parts by early march which is when the GPU is scheduled to arrive.

    • Thank you!

    • Do not get RGB ram for itx builds. Always aim for low profile ram. The CPU cooler becomes a challenge if there is not enough clearance

  • How much are you getting the mobo for? And why are you spending that much on it?

SSD I'd recommend something like this:

    https://www.amazon.com.au/SAMSUNG-Internal-Gaming-MZ-V8P2T0B…

    or this:

    https://www.amazon.com.au/Western-Digital-Black-SN850X-NVMe/…

But depends what your use case is. If it's for gaming - I don't think we'll see many Direct Storage titles in the next year or two so you don't really need a super fast drive for a while, in which case you'll get it for half the price in a year or two.

I'm also going to critique your choice of a 6800XT. Not sure what your use case or budget is, but personally I'd stretch a bit more and go for a 4070ti or a 4080. I've got a 4080 and DLSS 3 (frame gen) is a mind blowing, image quality to me is indistinguishable from "real frames" - certainly at high frame rates anyway. The recent cyberpunk update bumped my frame rate up from 110/120 average to 170+ (which means I can now pump up everything to Ultra and run psycho RT and still be hitting 120fps)

    • Thanks for your recommendations.

My plan was to go hard on everything surrounding the CPU/GPU; and upgrade those later when the AM5 platform is on its way out.

I stretched the budget to go from an A770 to a 6800 XT - The performance increase of the 4 series wasn't worth it for me and I'm keen to wait for future generations to improve performance (particularly on the ray tracing side).

For background, I'm currently gaming on a laptop I purchased for my business; which has an MX150 - So this is a huge upgrade for me, with its main purpose being Microsoft Flight Sim and a few other titles (mainly shooters, squad etc.)

      Thanks for the ssd suggestions!

You might want to hold off for a couple of weeks for the X3D series launch. If they're anything like the 5800X3D, it might be worth waiting.

    • Thanks for your input! I noticed amd released a video about the X3D products - I'm thinking the 7600 - 7600X will be enough to suit my needs for now (Just not sure if my power consumption/temperature theory that underpins the 7600 choice makes any sense) . I just noted in the comment above that my plan is a end of cycle upgrade - so I'll get a higher-end AMD cpu when that time comes.

Heres hoping power consumption numbers don't skyrocket and the 750w PSU will handle the upgrade in a few years!

      • Dunno about the V2 - but IIRC the V1's PSU struggled with some 3080s and the like even though it should have been big enough. The SFX form-factor impacted the guts of the PSUs

A 6800XT with the 6 core CPUs should be fine cause they draw power more like a 3070 than a 3080, but it is something to keep in mind if you go bigger anywhere.

        • Thank you.

          FYI the V2 has a 750w PSU (extra 100w on the V1)

  • What's your monitor here?

In that teeny case is it viable to drop to a RX6700XT(6750?) or 3070(Ti?) to lower your heat load?

They'll shred 1440p plenty fine and you'll only "need" bigger if you have a 4K 165hz monitor or something (the cards with the 7 in em can run 4K if you dial some stuff down, just don't go lower that the two I mentioned)

    • This was actually my original plan but was tempted by the recent 6800 xt deal.

In terms of managing heat, my plan was to go with the 7600 over the 7600x for its lower tdp/heat.

My plan was to use one of my two WFH monitors. One is a 1440p (most likely the one I will use) the other is a 4k.

      • Ya, when its a teeny bit more money shoving something bigger in is always tempting. As an owner of both a 6700XT (daughter's rig) and 6800XT (mine) they do both run cool for what they do.

That wattage rating on the CPUs is garbage BTW - Intel's lies about theirs and gives non-boost heat loads, but AMDs is just totally made up BS to make them look like Intel's ratings categories.

They're the same core count, run roughly the same voltage under load, and will therefore generate the almost same heat under load unless you lock your BIOS down to stop them boosting. Unless its only like $20 more or something where you may as well (even then), the X is virtually worthless and it need a benchmark to spot the 2% or whatever difference.

ahhmmm, your username, are you allowed within 100M of Ozbargain?

      Sorry I don't understand?

      • It has DV in it, I assume (hope?!) doesn't stand for that DV

  • If there's anything I can tell you from my little rough itx building experience is to make sure you get a good CPU cooler from the start. Unfortunately with my rvz03 I had a limited capacity of 83mm for CPU cooler. I tried the l9i thinking it would be sufficient… I was badly mistaken.
I have now ordered the noctua l12s. Hoping for better thermal control of my 13600kf.
The other mistake I did was aim too much for future proofing and got the 13600kf. That is a very hot cpu. And because of the case constraints is working against me. So my recommendation 8s to go for a cooler CPU with the best CPU cooler you can buy for your case. Do not plan to overclock your CPU you won't have a good enough cooler to keep it tame. Also I know yours comes with a AIO. Which even restricts you more with your cooling option.
As I mentioned above. Avoid RGB ram and go for lowest profile ram you can find. Because everything is tight in an itx every mm counts. Rbg raises the height of ram unnecessarily. Just go low profile RAM.
This was the first computer I have ever built. And while it was fun. I wasted a lot of money trialling and erroring.
Also if the only benefit of x670 over b650 is for overclocking(z790 vs b760 for lga1700) stick to the b650as overclocking in an itx will increase the heat of the CPU. It will just throttle your CPU if it gets too hot and disadvantage you.

    • Thank you - The AIO in my case seems decent - regardless, I will choose the cooler operating Ryzen 7600 - Didn't think about the RAM clearance!

The final build is here: https://au.pcpartpicker.com/list/3KNYDq

The final price came to (approx) $2,510. My initial budget was $1.5k (which was not realistic for an AM5 build). I was also intending on going for an ARC A770 but this deal: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/754105 for a 6800 XT was too good to resist considering the current GPU market.

The real loss was opting for the X670e motherboard and the associated ITX tax (perhaps offset by the "deal" on the ITX case). I pulled the trigger on the motherboard today, having noticed many sellers jack the prices up from $642 to $660+ (pcpp).

I'll be selling the cooler that came with the CPU - which also came with a free copy of the new Star Wars (considering selling, if someone wants the key).

    Hope this helps someone.

    • Mine cost similar to you. Got the noctua still not keeping the 13600 cool.

      • I'm not really across the 13 series CPUs - Perhaps try a repaste and/or take a look at upgrading case fans

What GPU did you go for out of curiosity?

        • +1

          3070 Asus ko.
Nahh the 13600 is just a very hot cpu. It's not an ideal CPU for itx
