Double edge! Mate, I have seen the future and you won't believe how many blades are in the razor.

  • +1

These are great. Be careful not to get too drawn in though. It's a double-edged sword…

    • +5

      whats the neg?

      • +1

        Yo Froz-boy, re:

        whats the neg?

I consulted my mate Occam about your question, and he advised me that usually there is no neg involved when taking the simplest route.

      • +1

You'll spend a little too much time on Youtube videos looking at tutorials and buying guides.

  • So we are in some kind of a time loop. Vynil discs, and now this back again.

    • +1

no one said vinyl was back except some delusional hippy

    • +4

And double edge razors have been back for years…

    • +5

Double edge razors never really went away, but theyre surging in popularity lately because people are realising that buying razor blades is significantly cheaper than cartridge razors, and they give a more comfortable and personal shave.

The gillete multi blade styles are designed to pull hair up and cut the hair under the skin - at the expense of more irritation and more ingrown hairs.

You only need one sharp edge at the right angle to do a great job.

OP if you go down this route, buy a sample pack of blades from somewhere like beard and blade, much better than these and those bic ones you mentioned

      • Meh, electric razors are better imo. I use safety razors because it's a cheap way to be old timey hipster.

        • +3

Electric 'razors' may suffice if your facial hair consists of about three strands that grow ~1 mm a week and are as thin as black mould … but for everyone else, they "just don't cut it" …

        • I use both. Double edged when shaving for my week and work - gets the best shave. Electric to maintain it when I’m driving to work during the week (as I’m always running late after getting my kids to childcare). Safety razor definitely closer and better shave - took a while to become good at it though

          • +1

@flashi007: ^ this. Double edge for clean shave, electric for quick maintenance.

      • Thanks for the advice.

  • +3

Cheapest way to shave, packs of blades off ebay. I think I paid $12 for a bunch of boxes like 7 years ago? Keep the blades dry and they last a long time unless you have steel facial hair.

    • shiiiick

    • ALDI brand one is awesome in my opinion and criminally cheap.

    • I am that steel facial hair guy. Cheap ebay packs of blades were really bad and I tried three different brands before giving up. Cheap electric shaver from Xiaomi was $40 and is still going good after year and half without any blade changes.

  • +3

Nobody is paying $15 for 12 supermarket blades.

If you find those blades don't work well for you, grab a few different brands and see which one you like best from VSHOD.

    Yes - terrible website
Yes - great prices and even better customer service.

    • +1

True, the blades aren't the best value, only suggested for beginners. If I like DE I'll get something like this bulk pack of Bic 100pcs for $14.40: https://www.amazon.com.au/BIC-Double-Safety-Platinum-Coverin…

      • +3

I would receive buying an assortment off ebay instead. There isn't one best blade, you might want to try a few.

        • Thanks. I plan on doing more research before buying blades in bulk.

        • I've been using those BIC blades for a long time. Probably the best value vs sharpness on the market.

      • Definitely get some samples.
I didn't mind the bic ones you linked but every razor and person is different.

I went through about 10 different blades before I settled on voskhod in my vintage Gillette slim razor (a very good shave)

Go to Vshod and order 10 or so different ones to sample. At $1-2 per pack it's an easy way to sample.

        Also free shipping

      • +1

Why not Derby or Astra for about the same price?

        • +1

Because there is no one size fits all/everyone.

I used derby for years and thought it was fine.
Tried astras and they were rubbish (for me) only to settle on voshkod after trying 10+ different blades.

A sample pack gives you the best chance to find the best blade for you

      • Derby work best for me from the 20 I tried. Each face will be diff.

    • +1

      that website not even secure?

      • +1

It uses PayPal so it's secure.

Add whatever items you want to the cart and you do your final checkout via PayPal.

        Plenty of people recommend Vshod

      • +1

It's an awful website with great service. Ordered from them several times and definitely recommend.

  • How are these different from regular razors?

    • +1

Cheap. Don't clog. Great shave. But need practice.

    • You feel manly using them and get less skin irritation in my opinion.
They're also soooooo much cheaper and more reliable.

A new blade costs you like 10 cents as opposed to $5 for a mach 4 cartridge and it's better for the environment since you can recycle the blades.

  • Just out of interest, what is a reasonable way to dispose of these used razors?

    • +2

Empty salsa jar makes an easy blade bank. Then the jar and blades can go into the recycling.

      • +1

Glass is recycled separately to metal, so they should go inside a tin and not a glass jar.

        • +2

Empty salsa jar makes an easy blade bank. Then the jar and blades can go into landfill.

    • I wrap the old blade back up in the new ones wrapper and chuck it in the bin.

    • +1

some blades come in plastic dispenser rather than paper box, you slide the old blade into the back of the dispenser …

you can also buy plastic blade boxes on ebay and amazon ….i use one for razor blades but also used stanley knife blades , etc ….

  • Leaf razor - crazy expensive but totally amazing shave, the gold standard. Derby single edge blades pack of 100 for under 10 bucks on ebay, purchased 2 years ago and i still have like 80 blades left, will achieve break even in about 5 years, a long term investment in the greatest shave of your life.

  • +2

    Feathers are the best.

  • +3

My recommendation for razors are Astra, they're the perfect level of sharp because they allow you to put some pressure behind your razor (giving you some safety margin). Many of the other blades I've tried can easily cut you if you tilt at the wrong angle (a skill you'll need to learn for safety razors).

However if you're willing to experiment, many Australian websites like Mensbiz sell sample packs. Here you can test different blades, cutting yourself until you find a pack that cuts you the LEAST XD
    https://mensbiz.com.au/products/double-edge-blade-sampler-pa…

    • +1

Astra for me as well, I cut myself to shreds on Feathers

      • Feather has no chill

    • If I use an 'aggressive' razor, you'll look for less sharp blades. Mild razor and you'll love Bic, feather, etc. I like mild razor with sharp blade.

  • +1

    Woollies have slashed the prices.

  • Ah razors. I remember that one razor I had, the mach 5 I believe (the cartridge was replaceable and the razors didn't have a backing so cleaning it out was easy).

Must have used that same one for atleast 2 years. Never got blunt. Must be the jeans I kept rubbing it on.

  • These are very easy to use FYI, less cuts than a standard cartridge razor

  • I bought a King C. Gillette DE razor this week - how does this compare?

    • KCG is better

    • There's a lot of personal preference in safety razor shaving, however a bit of weight to the razor gives you more control by less shakes/vibration.
I personally love a longer handle and they come in different thicknesses too.

  • +3
  • All this stuff is pretty meh, but okay to try. Not that it really is saving money since some modern DE razors can run to many hundreds of dollars, and even the old vintage Gillettes on eBay are going for ridiculous prices. When I started, you could get a Gillette Slim for about $40.

There is a local shave forum with plenty of helpful people called Paste & Cut. Worth checking out.
