Where to Exchange AUD to JPY in Sydney

Hi everyone,

I'll be going to Japan later this year and since the exchange rate is pretty good at the moment I thought I should exchange some cash soon. I have a citibank and ubank card which will allow me to withdraw and pay via card when I'm in Japan but I wanted to take advantage of the relatively good exchange rate now incase the rate drops when I'm there.

Back in the days, I went to KV Kunlun (now KVB Global - Sydney) which offered market rate. However it looks like it may not be as good as it used to be based on Google reviews. Plus they're only open Mon - Fri, 9am - 5pm.

I thought of using revolut but you can only withdraw up to $350 a month without paying fees??? I did some research and Japan seems to be more accepting of paying with card but people still recommend carrying cash.

Any ideas? What does everyone else do? Would be interested to hear if people got by with just using their card. Thanks in advance :)

  • I've never looked into this, I don't know about fees or using the Wise card in Japan, but what about this https://wise.com/jp/multi-currency-account/

    • It’s $10 to get the wise card.

  • +1

    ING and withraw in Japan

  • +2

Just get the money from an ATM in Japan.

The exchange rate is going to get better

  • The last two trips I just used my Citi card to withdraw from ATMs there. Plan to do the same next month.

I was looking at the Wise card but I’m not paying $10 for a card 🤭

    • This. Definitely recommend the Citi card. Most 7-Eleven/ Family Mart has an ATM and you can use your Citi card there.

    • Same, not paying $10 when I don't have to!

  • When I went I usually exchange it at places like Hai Ha in Cabramatta. They tend to have the best rates

    • I have actually asked my mum to check for me as she goes to cabra once a week :D

  • since the exchange rate is pretty good at the moment

It is? It's better than the big move early last year, but it's not exactly peaking at the moment.

Currencies appreciate as interest rates go up too. We have higher inflation than Japan so ours will go up quicker. I wouldn't be in any rush if I was you unless you have some major currency insight the rest of the market doesn't have.

  • You can pay with card in most places (though often not as convenient as tap), and where you can't, you can pay with pasmo/suica 90% of the time - cards which you can top up with…. yep credit card.

350 a month is probably ok, otherwise there are banks like ING which offer free withdrawl. I withdrew a few times with ING, at ATMs having some fees, and I was amazed that ING got me a very very good rate and refunded local ATM fees, so in the end I ended up paying maybe 20 cents or something to withdraw $500 vs spot rate (which you would never get anywhere anyway).

  • I used the citi global wallet / card… I'm not sure if it's still being offered as a product since the citi retail business has been acquired by nab?
