Boost Mobile Wifi Calling using Esim Cellular Connection

Can I use Boost wifi calling overseas while using an Esim for internet on the same phone?

I have a dual sim Samsung S22 where one sim is esim and the other is a physical Boost Mobile Sim. Can I buy a local esim and use that to supply internet for Boost Wifi calling?

The main issue I can see is whether my phone will allow a data connection on one sim and wifi calling on the other sim simultaneously. Has anyone tried this before?

  • A more correct question is will the Boost SIM use VoLTE on the eSim 4G connection. There is no wifi in question.

    Don’t have an S22 so I can’t tell you

Open side door, jam in the largest ever ESIM and slam door shut?

You can do this on a dual SIM iPhone, so Boost mobile does allow it. You just have to set mobile data to the eSIM line and tick 'allow mobile data switching'. However, making calls will be limited to Australian numbers and you won't be able to call 'overseas' using the inclusions on the Boost plan.
Sorry, but not sure if a Samsung is capable of doing this though

    • My plan does have overseas calling included, will this not work over wifi calling?

I got a message that ‘this type of call’ wasn’t allowed while on Wi-Fi calling overseas. As sajidmib says below, you can call any Aus number but not any other country including the one you’re in at the time

    • Same experience, worked on Samsung S21 Ultra

Though Intl calling is packaged on Boost sim, it works only while in AU.

Once overseas - only calls to and from AU works on wifi calling via Boost

Your device cannot hotspot itself, for you the best thing is use your boost sim in different phone that your S22 can provide hotspot to, with wifi calling you can call back home. But can receive calls from all over the world as your incoming number.

    • Ahhh that makes sense. Thanks

      • FWIW it does work on an iPhone but the battery drain is insane because it keeps looking for a network to connect to for the Boost SIM.

        • No sure that's true. I used this for a month overseas and did not notice any increased battery drain. The Boost SIM is connected via mobile data so its no more than using Boost over Wi-Fi.

          • @Amaris: If you’re on airplane mode, then yes it will work but then your other sim won’t work.

You can’t airplane mode a single sim, and turning it off will just disable it completely. You might be able to turn off network selection to not look for a network though.

  • I have Samsung S21 Ultra with a AU Boost physical Sim.
It did work (Apr 2022 & Jan 2023).

Travelled to India - bought an AirTel eSim with adequate data & unlim local calling (no international calls though)

Under "SIM Manager" in settings tab, activate both physical boost & esim - change all Calls/Messages/Mobile Data to esim
Under "SIM Manager" enable "Data switching and backup calling"
Under "Phone Settings", Enable Wifi Calling for both sims, change calling preference to Wifi for Boost, Mobile network preferred for local esim.

Hopefully it should work for you, like it did for me.
Take that with a grain of salt - Boost's wifi calling availability wasnt available 100% of the time - it was sometimes patchy, possibly based on mobile phone signal quality.

Though Intl calling is packaged on Boost sim, it works only while in AU.
Once overseas - only calls to and from AU works on wifi calling via Boost

Has anyone been able to get Boost wifi calling overseas in May 2023? I used it happily in Nov-Dec 2022, but Boost told me they have since disabled this because they introduced their roaming plans. But some people seem to have been able to use it this year. I was wondering if it's still possible?

I managed to get it working on my pixel 5 by turning off cellular radio through the hidden menu in the dialer x#x#4636#x#x (replace x by asterisk)

Just got back from Taiwan on the weekend. The new Boost roaming plan means the boost SIM connects to a local network and doesn’t switch to wifi calling automatically. However you can still get it to work by changing the boost sim network from automatic (in mobile settings) to another non compatible network (just pick a random network that isn’t the one that connected by default) and wait, eventually you’ll see the Telstra wifi calling come up.

Worked great for me, firstly while in wifi it works as you’d expect. Secondly I was using data from a cheap (OzBargain deal) secondary esim and managed to keep receiving calls and sms from my boost sim via wifi calling even when out of wifi! The latter dropped out a bit but was reliable enough for sms codes etc.

      • That's pretty clever!
Unfortunately here in the Netherlands my Boost sim will connect to all the networks available. :/

        • Just go into Aeroplane mode, then turn on WiFi

    • Late reply, but just searching for this and testing today - when I used it in 2022, I kept on running into problems when the Boost SIM would attempt to register on a network.

I found the most reliable WiFi calling (VoWiFi) was obtained by putting the phone into flight mode, then turning on WiFi.

Sometimes I needed to re-start the phone after doing this, but once sorted, it worked well. Reliable WiFi calls and SMS received over WiFi.

The alternative would have been to manually register to a banned network.

I'm just testing using data over an eSIM for WiFi calling now.

I am currently in Australia, and set up a free Optus 7 day 4G eSim to test this out on an S22

      • Set up Optus eSim
      • Turned on Data Switching and Backup Calling
      • Set the Optus eSim as the default for Mobile Data
      • Turned off Optus eSim (had to do this for next step to complete)
      • Manually selected network for Boost SIM to Optus (banned network, wouldn't register) (If I left both SIMs enabled, it would time out selecting a network)
      • Forgot home WiFi networks (need to leave WiFi enabled on phone, it seems to enable backup calling - I guess I could have walked out the door, but it's cold at the moment)
      • Confirmed couldn't make calls on Boost
      • Re-Enabled Optus eSim, set as default for data.
      • Called 1800 80 1920 (own number RVA) on Boost SIM, the voice confirmed that I was calling from Boost number, but was calling over Optus backup calling data connection.

This gives me confidence that I should be able to get WiFi calling working next time I travel.

  • Tried in Hong Kong with Motorola G54 Android 13 Au Boost physical sim. Boost Vowifi works as expected on hotel WiFi. Added an Airalo esims data only 1GB $5US to G54. Tried all combinations of forcing Boost to a non registerable service, aeroplane on/off and WiFi on/off (not connected) and data, voice, SMS thru esims and voice, SMS thru boost sim but could not get Vowifi working. Resorted to putting Boost sim in other phone and using esims G54 as hotspot when out and about.

  • Sorry to revive an old thread but seems like there are some pros here ! I recently switched from a Huawei phone to Samsung z fold 5. In the past I could pull the trick of airplane mode on then call over wifi (Boost), but with my Samsung phone both native phone app and google phone app aren't happy that I'm in airplane mode with wifi on when I try make a call. Specifically they want me to turn off flight mode to make the call.

    Any tips?

    • I've solved this and for those in similar boat the quick tapping method seems to do the trick. It goes something like: turn off all Sims, and then turn on the boost Sim and then go into flight mode as quickly as possible (my phone leaves wifi on when going into flight mode, if yours doesn't it might be an extra step), it should then activate wifi calling in the process of looking for a network
Edit: this worked for my Samsung phone but not my partners pixel 8a… Weird
