Best Way to Upload Photos to Cloud While Travelling

Hey guys, going travelling in a couple of months, have a mirrorless camera that will see a lot of use

Was wondering what you guys thought would be the best way to upload photos from an SD card to the cloud? Will have a mobile router for internet when overseas
So far have considered getting a USB type C -> SD card reader (but seems like cannot find one that is compatible with my pixel 6 pro)
Would prefer to not carry a laptop if possible but if push comes to shove, what would you suggest as the lightest option (considering the surface go, but would prefer not to buy a laptop to upload photos on a trip)

Thanks in advance!

  • See if there's a cable that can go from camera to phone

I use this reader with my Pixel 6. Same dual ports, but smaller and less expensive.

Use an SD>MicroSD converter, and just shoot with microSD cards instead

Lists Pixel 6 as compatible but YMMV

Basically, you just need to do some better googling

    • Thanks - yeah saw this - felt like it would be a YMMV situation on this front

    Which mirrorless do you have?

There may be app for transferring photos to your phone wirelessly as an alternative.

Yeah, it's a lot easier to back up photos to the cloud these days with how powerful phones are and the connectivity between cameras and phones being a thing.

Mobile data is easily available in so many countries, as is availability of wifi.

Almost 20yrs ago when I went to Africa, portable HDDs that one could plug CF cards into weren't reliable, uploading to the net was a dream, and I was left with two options… buy a laptop which I'd have to also lug around, or buy enough CF cards to last me the trip without having to delete anything. The CF cards were lighter, cheaper (still $1k) and also split up the storage in case anything got corrupted I wouldn't lose everything… so I went with that.

These days, I have a plethora of cheap, high capacity SD cards where less than $50 of cards will last me a whole trip, and I can back up photos to the web via my phone if I want to as well.

Cameras are also smaller and lighter but no less powerful. And half the time I just use my phone anyway which will do as good a job as my old Canon 350D and will back up my photos to OneDrive immediately upon connecting to wifi.

Being a travel photography is great these days!
