Sorry, it wasn't clear until you updated the title + description.

For all the AMD lads going back and forth about 7***X3D below, I want to just give you a heads up as a 5800X3D owner.

I see massive benefits from going to 7000. Yes it'll cost an arm and a leg, especially if your AM4 rig is expensive to start with.

HOWEVER, it's fully unlocked. Meaning you can finally tune the damn thing in bios without a 3rd party program setting pbo in windows every time you boot up (set up tutorial for this available on github).

The 5800X3D has amazing performance if you consider it's still am4, 100% back that up. But it's loud for my tastes and runs hot. I've been on AMD for about 7 years now and I've always been able to spend time properly undervolting it to be one of the most thermally efficient things available.

Everything has always run silent (e.g. 20 degrees max temp cooler) with 98% of it's original out of box performance. I'd LOVE that from 7***X3D.

Think prices will go down even further after end of this month when the AM5 X3Ds are out?

    • Likely yes but there won’t be much of them left

    • +1

7800X3D is going to be released in April so the 5800X3D does not cannabalise the 7800X3D sales.

The 7900X3D and 7950X3D are being released earlier because there's no equivalent 12/16 core X3D model.

      • +1

Yeah the price for the 7800x3d will probably be close to the $700 mark judging by the us price and you have to get an expensive mobo/ddr5

      • Fair enough. Also, I have 3900x, will it make a huge difference if I go to 5800X3D?

        • Definitely for gaming, you'd get a massive increase in some cpd bound games

          • @Kazusa: Even in not CPU bound games the 3D V cache makes a big difference.
I got 30% increase in most tiles at 4k(not CPU bound) when I upgraded from the 3900x

        • +6

I just did this upgrade. It is leaps and bounds ahead in Gaming.
Just pasting from one of my older comments that I had made on this.

5800x3D is a legendary CPU from AMD! I upgraded from AMD 3900x to a 5800X3d. Almost all AAA games was using only 70% of the 4090 on 4k. Lot of stutters as well. I was disappointed to see that. Ran to store and got a 5800x3D. BOOM !! GPU load shot back up to 99% and most importantly all stutters were gone and a smooth gaming experience.

          • +3

@varunbabu008: Damn, you're making me consider upgrading from a 5900X now

            • @Fire Chicken: Just get it. You won't regret it

            • @Fire Chicken: I have this problem too as I've got a 5900x (With an RTX 4080 so unsure of a bottleneck), the problem is that I don't know if the titles I play will benefit from the V cache that much

              • @Billy Herrington: I play a ton of games like Civ and emulated stuff, but I only have a RX 6800, so I'm unsure if it would make that big a difference for me.

I have a super packed mITX rig though and I'm not entirely keen on opening up that in case I can't fit everything back in

              • @Billy Herrington: Hey mate. What titles do you play mostly and at what resolution ? Hoping its 4k
I have noticed that most AAA games released in the last 2-3 years are more than happy to use the 99-100% of 4090 at 4k resolution. Check if your GPU is 99% usage or above when playing at Ultra settings. Ideally the GPU should be fully utilised. If not you most likely have a bottleneck

                • @varunbabu008: Main games atm are Chivalry 2 and Deep Rock Galactic. I look to play 1440p max settings at a minimum of 144 fps (Preferably 165 as this is my monitor res).

In Chiv 2 I get about 180 FPS but it dips a lot with DRG at around 150, but also dips heaps

                  • +1

@Billy Herrington: 5800X3D will definitely help with the dips for sure. For me it was all about the smooth gaming experience and wasn't worth the compromise hanging onto the 3900x. Don't get me wrong, 3900x and 5900x are ver good CPU's from AMD for multi tasking. However it is not made for gaming. 3D Vcache makes a big difference. If you are dropping this kinda money on a 4080 / 4090 then I would want the best gaming experience to go with it as well.

Btw if you have the money, get a 4k 120Hz resolution monitor (LG C2 42). 4080/4090 are 4k cards. With Nvidia frame generation getting added to most of the new games, 4k 120 Hz is no longer unattainable. But of course all of this will depend on the games you play. Most importantly only upgrade if you are unhappy with the performance. Hope this helps

                    • @varunbabu008: Thanks mate. I went with a 4080 to give myself a buffer as I stream (On the gaming pc) also on Twitch, so that has an innate affect on performance. That said I still believe I'm experiencing a CPU bottleneck, but I can't 100% confirm it, and I know some games benefit from 3D Vcache more than others.

It's likely that I'll grab this CPU once it's a bit cheaper, but yeah I'd prefer to get a concrete answer to my particular situation ha! Your answer helps though, much appreciated!

          • @varunbabu008: I concur. Upgraded from a 3900X to 5800X3D and way less stutter on titles. Adding to that, it takes -30 CO using PBO2 Tuner across all cores without a hitch - cooler, quieter, same performance. No brainer! I don't even feel the impact of 4 less cores because the IPC gains and fat cache just churns through everything.

            • @xis123: Glad to hear. I used MSI kombo strike profile 3 which I believe does the -30 on all cores

          • @varunbabu008: what PSU and cooler are you using?
Will I need to upgrade from my 650w and air cooler?

            • @WhatWhoWhyUsername: Whats your GPU that you intend to pair with 5800X3D ?
I am on RM850X and Corsair Hydro Series H115i RGB Platinum 280m paired with RTX 4090.
5800X3D definitely runs hot. I would recommend a good AIO liquid cooler

              • @varunbabu008: rtx 3070
2k single monitor for normal gaming
triple 1080p for sim racing/rally games.

what are your average cpu temps in game?

        • I have a 5600x and its maxed out at 1440p with a 3080 and 4090. I thin the 5800x3d will be an excellent choice.

  • +2

Thanks OP I needed a set of alphabet flash cards for my (currently brewing) kid, good timing

  • So tempted to get a 5800X3D system, but I'm coming from an i5-8400 (at least it has reuasble ddr4), but not sure if its worth buying AM4 mobo+CPU, or waiting for 7800X3D/AM5/DDR5 but the cost of that will just be so much higher…

    • +1

Can't decide whether I should upgrade from i5-11400 to a 5800x3d. If I could get a deal on a decent MB may push me over the edge.

      • One of the things making it hard for me to commit is how many motherboards there are. If there was just a couple of options i probably would have upgraded to a x3D by now.

But selecting/ getting a good deal on a mb is a pain.

        • +1

Go to pcpartpicker and filter the list of motherboards by price.

Look at the VRM tier list, and find the best motherboard in your budget.
          https://linustechtips.com/topic/1137619-motherboard-vrm-tier…

You don't need a top end board, it's only an 8 core CPU at the end of the day.

Personally I would wait for the AM5 part if you don't already have an AM4 board

      • +1

That's not much of an upgrade for the price. Very few scenarios will have a human-detectable difference.

The demand for the 5800x3d is mostly those of us who have older AM4 CPUs. We love it because we can pop it in without buying a new mobo.

    • +1

DDR5 prices are dropping quickly enough, 7000 series CPUs are down 30-40% from launch, cheaper board options are becoming available but I'd expect prices to soften.

Target a 7900X3D and a solid 2x NVMe PCIE 5.0 slot board. These launch prices won't hold long, at least for the 12 and 16 core parts.

    • Depends on what you are using it for. If you aren't doing heavy video editing all the time and the biggest load on is gaming then just get a ryzen 5600x and put the rest towards a GPU - which will be the bottleneck. You'd be better off splurging on a 4700ti or something instead.

Even a ryzen 3600 is still a very good CPU for 99% of use cases.

  • ok how much of a difference in performance is it from the 5800X to this? because I dont' think the upgrade would be worth it.

    • Look into your specific use case, wait for price drops IMO.

I personally wouldn't advise a non-5000 AM4 user to pay more than $400, so less for you, especially if you're not sporting a high end GPU or trying to push 300+ FPS in some games.

  • Worth upgrading from a 5800X?

  • Does Intel have a current competitor to the 5800X3D in the same price range? Or does Intel still need to release double sided cache chips like AMD but are lagging behind still?

    • This is stacked cache, not double-sided, and Intel will still trade blows with this in a lot of scenarios as they already put a cache bump in the 13 series design.

Wait for benchmarks to see what use cases get benefit, as I'd expect prices to drop to remain compelling given all the competition.

  • Planning on getting a new pc in the next 6 months. My current cpu is 11 years old. Is it worth getting a 5800x3d, or is it worth waiting til the 7000 series x3d cpu comes out?

    • If you are planning to keep same PC for next 10 years, I would suggest you wait for 7xxx3D.

    • 7900X3D seems like the smart play, but wait for price drops on that and AM5 options.

    • Yes, wait. AM4 board prices are insane at the moment, though DDR4 prices are consistently testing the next lowest ATL.

    • Same boat. “Life got in the way”, and I’m on an overclocked dinosaur i5-750. Even GPU was bought 6 years ago!

But 5900x is what excites me. And maybe 6700 or so with GPU.

    • Don't buy AM4 for a new PC

      • Oh, mannnn… don’t say that. I’ve waited forever, 5900x looks mental, and just waiting for price drops, do a SFF ITX build (probably LianLi Dan AIO H20

Now I need to start research from scratch?

      • Yeah, I was thinking I could buy this, then sell my 5800X for $300. Nice upgrade for not much

  • This just reminded me to redeem Uncharted from my purchase few months ago, expired 31/01 still let me redeem tho

This is the cheapest item I could find that qualifies https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/0892760524?m=A4XRJ8S0WXSO0&ref=…
Brings down the total to $488.98

    • How did you find it?
I am looking for similar as cheap as possible item for "Buy 2 save 10% Amazon UK" promo but there is no sorting by price…

      • got lucky I guess since there is no easy way to sort by price

        • Agreed. It involves a few targeted searches, then scrolling a LOT

  • It came to $489.19 for me. About time I upgrade from 3600.

They want the Covid/Mining Era back! :DDD
    https://www.pcworld.com/article/1499957/amd-is-undershipping…

    • +1

AMD deliberately under shipping chips to maximise profit, wow. When an i5 build can give this chip a run for its money may aswell go Intel.

      • Nvidia are doing the same though (have basically said this in slightly different terms to shareholders), and i'm not aware of a specific quote, but almost certainly intel are doing the same.

  • Seeing $479 + book

    • Yeah, I’m seeing total price has dropped to $483.03 delivered

  • I have a 3700x CPU is it worth it to upgrade? I mainly play games so no video editing or photoshop for me.

    • +1

for games i dont see why not, look up Gamer nexus or Hardware unboxed reviews. Its a beast for gaming! It wont be in stock forever so depends if you want to run AM4 for a lot longer or move on top AM5 or Intel.

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ajDUIJalxis

Just an older video for context im sure theres more out there

      • +1

Yeah I think ill stay for a bit longer and the difference is kind of major without hurting the wallet too much. I can at least push the "new" upgrades for much later.

        • Is it really major? 🤔 what gpu is best to match it?

          • @CauseNEffect: Its major for my because my CPU is my bottleneck :l I have a 3080 but my ryzen 3700x is really chugging.

  • Has anyone's order shipped yet?

  • Worth upgrading from a 3700x? Gpu 2080.
