Anyway to Choose New Alternator by Size

Well my ute uses a weird size alt which is rather small I'm wondering if there a way to cross reference it's size to find others that would fit.

It's B2500 ute with an 80a alt from memory. A heavy 4x4 session on the winch or even driving with the light bar and Spottys it does not like.

I'm aware I'll likely have to upgrade cabling.

Could you not google mazda b2500 alternator upgrade like everyone else?

      Used OzGoogleBargain instead.

Google was so yesterday, ChatOzBargain is the GOAT.

    • I have there is nothing to be found. So I was wondering if they're was a way to cross reference my mounts with a data base or not.

  • good chance of ranger being same fitting imo
    not sure if that helps

    • No new ones use a different t mount.

  • Easiest way is probably to go see an auto sparky. Probably tell you off the top of their head what others will fit.

    • I've asked 2 1 just looked up and have me specs of a new one. Other guy had no idea.

I've been trying to google conversation and alt swaps looks like I'm shit out of luck

      • Maybe you can find something here.

  • Just be wary of fitting higher amperage alternators, they only produce higher amps at higher revs so meandering around town might flatten the battery.
Maybe get a bigger battery or dual battery system if running a winch.

    • Delta/star can effect this but let my insure you alts are not all the same and higher amps units are not just more rpm.

I already run a larger crank battery and second battery is about as big as I can go.

Winches ran from primary batt. With winch pulling a few 1-200 amps pretty easy. Winching is pretty hard on it, add in the light bar 2 Spottys/fridge amd a few extra things and it can barely keep up at the best of times.

  • Should also mention the us spec b2500 has a different belt (serpentine) as well as a different mount so that's a no go.

  • might have to wander around a self serve wreckers with a ruler/caliper/tape?
    .

  • Depending on the age of the ute you have to be mindful of the electrical interface between the alternator and the car. Lots of modernish vehicles have ecu control of alternator and that would need to be compatible.
Have you talked to an auto elec about changing the winding arrangements and fitting a bigger diode pack. Change from delta to star (maybe backwards) and gain about 40% amperage at the loss of low rpm charging.

    • This car is ancient so no worries there.

      • The same vintage NB mazda MX5 have ecu controlled alternators. Right pain.

  • How big is your battery and how much winching are you doing?

Lots of 4wders have "dual" main batteries for winching (AND a third for the fridge, etc). You'd need two new main batteries though unlikely to be that cost effective unless you intend to do lots of winching.
