Required Info from Eye-Test to Order Glasses Online

So my father is due to have an eye test after finally having finished his post op appointment/check up for cataract surgery on both eyes(with lenses).

What I'd like to find out is the required measurements I need to request from the provider to enable me to order a pair of reading glasses online.

I've seen people reference it before on ozbargain but don't know where to start…. Also if anyone has any good suggestions for vendors, I'm all ears :)

Sorry for the poor formatting and grammar, as I'm writing this in the doctors waiting room…

P.S lenskart is a vendor I'm looking at, but will happily take suggestions….

  • Get his PD on the script. You can do it yourself but i like it to be accurate. You cannot order ANY online glasses without your PD.

    • Pretty sure optometrists are not obliged to give their PD measurements.

Optometrists don't usually take your PD, the sales assistant will measure it with the little ruler they carry on them. They are reluctant to give it out because they know if someone asks for PD they are going to be ordering glasses from China. But it's literally just the distance between your pupils, anyone with a ruler, eyes, and a brain can measure it.

Pretty sure online spectacle sites have one where you hold a credit card (fixed known dimensions) up to your face and it measures the PD.

Saw my wife doing it a few years ago and I was a bit confused. I thought initially it was how she processed her only fans refunds. Then again I'm easily confused.

        • I can assure you that not everyone with a brain can measure PD. I've had way too many sales reps measure all sorts of different numbers. There's also left and right PD from the centre point. (which I believe is to be taken from your bridge)

I believe I remember someone saying they should provide it because the government pays for the old fogies eye tests…. But, Iam not sure about these things…..

        • When I checked the Medicare agreement ages ago they were required to give patient their prescription if asked but not PD.

          • @shaybisc: Whenever I've had an eye test, the prescription did not have the PD by default.
But, they always added it when I requested.

      • They are not but usually comply with gentle pressure. I have never been turned down for me or my son.

Surprised your father still needs glasses after cataract surgery.
I wore glasses for 40 years and had my cataracts done and I no longer need glasses.
Left eye was very weak (+5.5) done mid Dec and at my test a couple of weeks ago the vision in that eye was "better than 20/20"
Right eye was done 3 weeks ago and is healing just fine.
Such a change not to need 3 pairs of glasses - reading, computer and distance.

But to answer your question you need the prescription which shows the test results.

      after cataract surgery.

Can you change your eye colour at the same time?

    • He's worn glasses for probably 50+ years as he is 80 and they are only for reading…. He can read without them know but I believe its more strain than using his old pair of glasses…..

    • Majority of people still use glasses to some extent following surgery, generally for near

        Source of statistics?

  • I've been putting off going to the optometrist because they always painfully measure the pressure in my eyes when I do, 15 minutes of blasting air into my eyes and dropping yellow dye into them. I had a dream last night that they told me I had eye cancer and they'd need to scoop out my eyes or I'll die within 15 years.

      painfully measure

It's not meant to be painful. Uncomfortable yes, painful no.

      • +2

        Also shouldn't take 15min, maybe 30sec

        • +3

They probably spending most of the 15 minutes figuring out how to knock me out without causing a scene so they can scoop out my eyes.

        • Seems to take the 15 minutes or so with me to get my head to stop rebounding and eyes closing. I'm very phobic with my eyes…

        • No this one's different where they put in the yellow dye first.

  • Script and PD. Mine have always had PD measured by optometrist and present on the script without asking.

I've used zenni and eyebuydirect. Zenni frame variety seems lacking these days. eyebuydirect has a heap more choice. They are especially good if you are just getting basic lenses as they very regularly offer 2 for 1 on the frames (and basic lenses are cheap). My last pairs of reading glasses were 2 pair for around $75 delivered. Arrived in a couple of weeks after ordering.

  • Go to Specsavers for an eye test and prescription. They can email it to you after.
Then use the details to order lenses and frames at Vision Direct online.

    That's how I do it.

    • They never provide the PD though which is a pain!

I wore bi-focal glasses for 20 years. They corrected both short and long sightedness.
Had my cataracts done, now don't need glasses.
I can read without glasses most things but struggle on some small scripts.
So all I need is occasional use of reading glasses, which are just essentially magnifiers.
Just go to the chemist and try out their off the shelf reading glasses to find the right magnification, comfort and style.
Try a few places till you find what you like. Will only cost you $20, so buy a few different styles - lol

    • As a 70 year-old with cataracts done about 8 years ago, I totally agree with this.
I've found that my vision has varied slightly since the operations, so glasses from optometrists are only good for a year or so and then the vision goes slightly out of focus. This has happened with long distance, reading, plain and varifocals.
I too would suggest reading glasses from chemists or $2 shops - just go in and try a few until you find some that work.
