Which Ryobi Blower for Garage Use / Car Drying

I am looking for a Ryobi 18V blower to dry my car and blow the dust out of garage, no garden work.

This one comes with battery and charger but might be overkill for what I need?

And this one might more compact, speed dial good to have but under powered maybe?

It would be nice to have some user reviews, thanks.

I have the second unit. It is pretty good and light weight so you can swing it around easily. My wife actually prefers it for general use over the full size one.

    • Since I only have 1,5 size garage I am looking for the unit with just enough power, not the most powerful thing available. I dont want a tornado in the garage and had to put mufflers all the time. Thank you.

Purchased a Ryobi blower a few years back(RB 1851S) best money ever spent! Use it for cleaning the garage out.Fantastic when you are detailing your car, gets all the water out of the alloy wheels, grill & vents.Just a all round great piece of equipment.

    • RBL1820J makes more sense same price with battery, but if its more powerful than I need, it will be just unnecessary weight for me. also nozzle is too thick compare the R18TB

That is mine! Great little unit.

I use it nearly every day. Fantastic unit!

Have this one as well. Personally found the little (R18TB-0 ) under powered, RBL1820J too big and bulky. This one is about the right size.

I ended up getting extra one for parents as they kept borrowing mine. Gone are they days of them bending over and sweeping leaves and rubbish. They just blow it into a corner then vacuum it up. You'll also want to use a minimum 5aH battery with this blower to get reasonable runtime.

        • Curious - what do they use to vacuum it up? (That’s always been my reservation about getting a leaf blower.)

          • +1

@Ihhdle: They use an old dinosaur vacuum cleaner to suck it up. No point getting using a fancy Dyson when any old one will do the job. Just empty canister afterwards.

I have this unit too and love it. Other than power, consider the ergonomics of using the smaller "shop blower". I'm pretty tall and had to stoop down when I had a little Ozito blower but the RB 1851S has the long nozzle so you just walk around with the tip resting on the floor clearing anything in its path. Great unit.

      • Thanks for pointing out the ergonomics;tbh didnt consider that.
I think OBL1820S is better than the workshop one, but having no low-med-high setting is kinda turned me off. I might use the shop one to fire up the charcoals as well. in the meantime garden blower would send them to neighbours roof. lol

FWIW there’s quite a few user reviews on the Bunnings site, eg, the smaller unit has reviews of people using it on their car engine, bikes, and most describe it as powerful for such a small unit.

Looking to buy one of these two as well, and some reviewers say they have both and they complement each other.

    • You are right, both have more than enough reviews actually, I'll dig into them.

  • The first one you linked is a piece of crap. It struggles to blow gravel around a concrete floor. You want this one https://www.bunnings.com.au/ryobi-one-18v-cordless-garden-bl… i have the old version and its amazingly powerful.

    • it would be probably an overkill for me then, I will only blow the dust from garage, wont be using for any garden work. Thanks anyway :)

      • One of these garden type ones will do a much better job of drying a car than the small one. Weight different will be negligible for how long you will use it each time.

  • Ryobi 18V blower to to dry my car

I use one of these. No charger is required and is better drying.

Why people use a 18V blower to dry the car baffles me. You might as well just drive around the block and that will dry it.

Not if you are into detailing a car properly.

      • Okay, I'm listening…….

Thank you. Blowers are scratch free and speed up the whole process. if I have a battery blower handy; I can finish it 5-10mins whereas with microfibers I have to at least 2 passes on every panel + increased risk of scratches.

      • speed up the whole process

But it's therapeutic. I love washing my car because it's time to chill out.

        increased risk of scratches.

I've never had this problem. I would say an air blower could be just as risky with scratches with blowing crap all over the car that is within the air or around the car.

        • Not easy to reach those area where water get trapped. So blower would be better choice. Works really well on wet wheels when you want to work on your tyres.

Totally useless on paint with no protection layer, water sticks to nude paint.

  • Wait you guys use a blower to dray your car?

OMG, I have been using the Microfibre towels all this time!

Blowers are great for those really hard areas.Wheels, grills etc….

    • +1

I am using my shop vac/ blower to do as first step. Like Hackney said; it is great to pull out the water from grills etc. Then I use microfiber to wipe remaninings. This way I can easly dry out a small car with a regular sized microfiber.

I have the smaller and use it for garage and cleaning tool bench. There are 3 settings and the highest (3rd) is quite good. You'll easily be able to blow loose debris and dust out of the garage with it.

The first is for a large volume blow which you won't need.

Assuming your garage is typical single or double size, not oversize.

    • yeah standard size garage. Someone else mentioned about ergonomy;
Wondering Is smaller one powerful enough to dust it without bending down? I might 3d print to extend the hose maybe..

      • +1

For me, my height and arm length, yes blowing without bending is achievable.

Its 3rd/highest setting is quite forceful.

My garage floor is concrete so also quite smooth, and inside is still windwise. I wouldn't use the small blower for my driveway which has course concrete plus trying to fight even slight wind from other directions.

        • Thanks for sharing your experience. I'll go with shop vac as well.

I have the first one (RBL1820J) and it's perfectly fine at undusting a double garage and clearing the driveway of leaves.

When it comes to drying vehicles, it lacks the concentrated velocity that "blasts" water away. I'm fine with this as I just want to get rid of water usually stuck in mirrors and jams - then wipe with towels.

The pipe is 2 pieces so maybe 3d printing a narrower tip can boost velocity?

I’ve got the garden style and workshop style. Garden is OK, but not variable speed. Good for ‘sweeping’ the garage or driveway after mowing. had it for years, great for standing while blowing the floor.

bought the workshop one after a mate brought his camping and used it to get the campfire going. Being able to adjust the speed is awesome to give the campfire a boost. Also very handy to be able to clean down a workbench etc carefully around stuff you can’t be bothered moving. Haven’t used it to dry a car, but imagine it’s be OK on good paint the water beads on.

    Don't buy RIOBI!

    • +2

      But Ryobi is ok?

      • +1

I have had mine 4 years, absolutely no issues.

    • +1

I’ve never heard of RIOBI. Is that cheap knockoff of Ryobi?

I find Ryobi good value for money. Decent gear for reasonable price for home use. I’ve given mine a pretty good workout over the years. Haven’t felt the need to throw any against the wall in frustration.

    • +1

you must buy your tools from Funnings.

  • I had a try my friends ozito shop blower last night, Ryobi R18TB. Looks like it'll be sufficient for me. Thanks everyone for sharing their experiences!

For anyones interest, saw this in the latest Supercheap catalogue.

    • Already got the Ryobi, but love to see how this performs!
