Got the Trail 3 Goretex, comfortable runners, just like the normal pegasus with waterproofing, I would jump on these but the color is hideous, I guess that's why they are cheap 🤷‍♂️

    • +6

I actually don't mind the colourway. Shame they don't have 2E otherwise would have bought.

    • +1

With the Goretex, it would be less breathable right?

      • Not for long runs, muddy short runs or in wet grass less than 15km.

      • Factually yes but I say this because goretex is still breathable (obviously) and as the grading of goes higher it has greater measure of breathability. I don't think there is a chart for Nike shoes that explain how breathable each pair are, goretex has like a g/m2 something something numbers to explain how breathable different levels of goretex are

        • +2

Any waterproof membrane is going to be less breathable than not. Also, they become buckets when they fill up with water (and how do you plan to stop them filling up with water when it rains?) My general approach to outdoor shoes is now 'quick to wet, quick to dry'. If it rains, you'll get wet. Make sure your shoes and socks will dry well.

      • I have the Trail 3 GTX and wear them all year round. No doubt the regular Trails will vent better, but these are my absolute go to especially for walking the dog in winter!

    • +1

The 3 was a great shoe! 4 seems narrower and less stable or maybe that's just me!

    • +1

Totally love this color. Just what I was looking for but shame about the bad reviews, seems they are not waterproof. Nike why?

    • +1

Reviews seem to say their water resistance is crap though

    • I guess the colour would work if you are Ronald McDonald.

  • -6

Nike is always so expensive, even when on sale. Adidas on the other hand always have better sales.

Bought 2 x ultraboosts in past sales. One for $82 delivered and a triple white recently during BF sales for $68 delivered. Can't go wrong at that price.

    • +14

If you run in them it's not close. Nike all day

      • +8

They both have some good shoes and some really crap shoes

        • +3

Maybe so but I'd love to see a $100 adidas that is close to any Pegasus for a good run.
I understand shoes don't all suit everyone though.

          • +1

@drprox: For $100 runners better to look at NB or Asics I think

            • @reactor-au: Funny you say that. I have Nike, NB and ASICS! Haha

      • -7

Correct, I don't run and I'm not a fanboy of either. I buy whichever is cheaper and has more range of colours on sale, which I found Adidas do more often than Nike, that's all. I've had Nike Pegasus 34 or something in the past and no doubt they're comfortable shoes but it's a shame that only few colours go on sale on smaller discount and only occasionally.

      • +1

i work on my feet moving a lot and i'd say nike all day too, too bad for the colour scheme being slightly waterproof would make these great for work

i dont have anything against adidas but in the last 20 years most of their shoes are just ok for sunday strolls or a night out.

        • +1

I also work on ky feet moving a lot. I use to swear by Nike, but have made the switch to Skechers work sneakers and omg the difference is incredible. They're not the most fashionable, but all black, and no laces! Their non slip performance in a wet and oily kitchen is also phenomenal, I wish I made the switch sooner.
          https://www.skechers.com.au/men-s-work-relaxed-fit-cessnock-…

          • @NoApostrophePlurals: yeah i tried a very similar looking pair to those they were ok, i dont remember them being great on slippery surfaces and they wore out really quickly (on smooth hospital floors).
i think the 2018 free runs are so far my favourite (i recently bought a pair and they seem a lot cheaply made so i wont swear by them).

Thanks for suggesting though, i might try schetchers out again when the current shoes die

    • +5

Bought 2 x ultraboosts in past sales

Are those waterproof trail-running shoes? If not, then those aren't a true like for like comparison.

      • -4

My comment is not targeted at this specific model but all Nike shoes in general.

        • +2

True. I only buy Nike when I can get the Pegasus for <$100. This rarely happens so I've been running on the Ultraboost and found that they're actually decent(I'm now on my fifth pair). I would avoid the cheaper range as it's crap. Just wait for a sale and you'd be alright.

      • +1

I think for trail shoes, Merrell and Saloman make better ones after using them for tough mudder and spartan races. Wouldn't get anything with tie up laces for trail since they're a pain to tie up when they're wet or have mud.

Nike makes great running shoes but I'm not so sure about trail shoes, these ones look like running shoes to me.

        • I coincidently bought a pair of Merrell Moab 2s today after seeing this post with the Cashrewards 20% Amazon offer. Just need a pair of shoes that will hopefully reduce my chance of rolling my ankle; I am so paranoid and have been avoiding going on hikes for the better part of 2+ years after back to back rolled ankle within months.

          • @Lucille Bluth: Not sure if you've tried, but perhaps a light way high ankle boot may provide more confidence and support?

        • +1

Personal preference. Salomon are way too narrow for my feet..

I ran a 175km trail race in Nike Wildhorse and had zero issues, they were awesome.

And tbh with all the trail running I've done, having traditional shoe laces has been the least of my concerns.

As I said though, shoes are a very personal thing, not all feet are the same.

          • @shbshb: I had a bad experience of losing a shoe halfway through a run lol

Couldn't tie them up properly due to mud, then mud pulled one of them off when I was waist deep in water…

            • +1

@Serapis: Haha that doesn't sound ideal!!

    • +2

Nike make better running shoes though.

Ultraboost I would stay away from. Aesthetic wise I love them, casual gym and walking. But actual running that’s nope for me. The only adidas I would buy is probably the Prime X but they never go on sale.

    • I always thought Ultraboost were the most comfortable shoes that you could actually get under $100 regularly but after buying Pegasus 38s in triple black on sale (I think I paid $85) I've bought another pair of Pegasus 39s again on sale and ended up being $90ish after cashback and then the Pegasus trail 4s (non goretex ones) for $115. I have to say the new Nike foam especially combined with zoom air shits all over ultraboosts for comfort but I still think my Ultraboost 20s look better than any of the bikes but trust me you'll be shocked how comfortable Nike has become in recent years (granted I'd pretty much only worn ASICS until about 2019)

    • -2

For running, I think Nike is King.

      • +6

        It's all dependant really.
ASICS, Saucony and Brooks have amazing runners.

Looks to ASICS Novablast or Saucony Endorphin range. Fantastic!

      • Its good to have an opinion

  • +3

Search & rescue teams won't have any trouble finding you if you get lost in the forest wearing those!!!

    • -1

I thought those one for whom wear in gyms, taking selfie then go home???

  • +5

I bought a pair a few months back. Anyone buying because they want waterproof shoes, forget it.

Returned mine, terrible at keeping water out.

  • +5

Paying for delivery on a $140 order feels extortionate in 2023.

    • Try getting The iconic to price match/beat and you'll get free shipping otherwise but something extra to push your order over the free shipping limit and return it within the time limit (usually 30-60 days after delivery)

      • +1

The iconic don't have same model.

    • +5

buy 2 pairs, return the extra pair. if you want to be a bit less obvious about it, buy your size and another half a size smaller/bigger. then you've got a good reason to return

      • -5

That’s why we can’t have nice things!
Seriously though.. if you think the price including delivery is too much, then just don’t buy it!

        • +3

Nike have jacked the minimum order amount to get free shipping from $200 to $270 so go whinge at them about your imaginary nIcE tHiNgS

        • +1

I still bought them, it's a good price. Still doesn't change what I said though, big fella.

    • Considering this is coming from another country, $10 is pretty cheap.

  • Check the reviews, they seem like bad shoes

    • +2

Not sure about the goretex ones specifically but the trail 4s are frikkin awesome IMHO

    • Where are you seeing these bad reviews? they're 4-4.5/5 stars when searching them..

      • +1

Right there on the product page. 3.5 stars.

        Poor water repellant
        - 25 Jan 2023
Great looking shoe and unbelievably comfortable. Unfortunately though they're terrible at keeping the rain out which is the reason I bought them. I've owned many Gore Tex products in the past including shoes and rain jackets and unfortunately these shoes are very poor. It's a shame as I love Nike shoes. I will give a shout out to Nike customer support, they were fantastic at resolving my issues.

        • What with the nike website having a total of 17 reviews It doesn't really stand out as a great example (hence me searching elsewhere for a larger pool of reviews, seeing only 4-4.5 stars), but if you're going by the nike website with only 17, looking at the reviews there it's 3.5/5 or 7/10 (not the rating of a "bad shoe"? maybe a mediocre/okay shoe?), with the only 1&2 star reviews are about water resistance (other than a 2 star complaining about the goretex logo size) which is likely due to people ordering the wrong size and forcing their foot in, busting the threading, essentially ruining the waterproofing (some even mention that it's the threading/lining that is letting the water in) as it's not something that common on larger pools of reviews (i.e. runrepeat.com).

Even going by the review you've quoted, where they've given 1 star (?) it starts with "great looking shoe, unbelievably comfortable" and ends with a positive customer support interaction 'resolving his issues'? - going by reviews like that, I'm not sure how you could think the rest would be any more reliable/logical? "Great shoe, comfortable, looks nice, but the ones I got had an issue with the water proofing to I sent it back without issue …1 star!" 🤦

          • +2

@lulzenberg: Not sure what you're facepalming. My read is the person doesnt reccomend the shoe. They then commend customer service for resoving the issue.
Probably got a free return and refund. Which would be a good outcome… And still cant reccomend the shoe. Thats a good honest review in my books

            • -3

@yogo: We have differing opinions of what a product review is then I guess. If I receive something that has a fault or is damaged, I send it back, either in exchange for another one (then review the actual working product), or a refund. I would then leave my experience with the transaction on the company/store, not a review of the faulty/damaged product I received on the product page. I'd give a company/store that sent out a faulty product and refused to resolve the issue 1 star. If they accepted it and took the return/exchange, I'd review the store/company based on that.

A review of a faulty product isn't a reference for a product unless they are all faulty (which going by people who have had the complete opposite experience on both the nike website and others, they aren't). A review of a faulty/damaged product is entirely useless from a product reference perspective, in my opinion anyway.

          • +1

@lulzenberg: If they're being bought for their waterproof qualities, which is a major reason why people buy Gore Tex shoes, then not sure how you could be surprised by a one star review if they're not waterproof, regardless of how good they might be in other areas.

            • -1

@shbshb: As above, we have differing ideas of what a useful product review is I guess.

            • +2

@shbshb: I bought these for trails and hiking, I've used them in very swampy mud, in rain, river crossings and on beaches with waves crashing in which is great! As long as it's under the ankle as intended in trails and not extreme weather it does the job - coming out completely dry.

In heavy rain I can easily see how water can get through the tongue since that part has a gap when shoes aren't tied tight enough and there's heaps of water coming through, almost had that problem once but it was just a tiny bit of water seeping to the top of my socks :)

              • @daniesaurs: Glad you had a better experience than me, good to hear.

  • im a lazyass that wont ever exercise so i think i will stay with my 39$ cheap adidas.

seems like a sick shoe though, dig the colour scheme maybe just me

    • +1

think i will stay with my 39$ cheap adidas.

To be completely honest, even if you don't intend to run in them, a shoe with great support even for walking or standing is a godsend.

I only took an interest in proper support later in life, wish I took it more seriously as opposed to looking for shoes that have nice aesthetics.

      • +1

same. was only when i had a foot injury that i started learning about pronation, support, cushioning etc. trying to get my mother to understand the importance of a good shoe, especially since she's had a couple of falls before and her balance won't exactly get better as she gets older. she still looks at the cheap sub-$50 shoes :\

  • +5

    It's gore-tex. Do you know about gore-tex?

Everytime I hear gore-tex, I think of this Seinfeld episode.

    https://youtu.be/lt6KRKHpKhY

    • +2

You like saying gore-tex, don’t you?

Admittedly, that is always my first thought as well.

  • Can't say I'd seek out white shoes for trail running. Horrible aesthetics, but decent shoe.

  • Good for wide feet?

    • +4

If you can handle zero drop with plenty of cush, I highly recommend Altra for wide feet.

      • +1

Thanks for tip, Altra look great for what I'm looking for!

        • +1

All these arguements about Adidas vs Nike, truth is, if you're not in a barefoot/Minimalist shoe, you are probably harming your feet.

  • Sample size for the reviews are too small but overwhelmingly supportive on not being waterproof let alone water resistant lol
    Makes the massive G O R E T E X more of a flex and a fashion statement.
I would purchase these as I don't mind the colour but as a replacement shoes for walk and jogs in general
    Still a nice deal imo

  • Is goretex part of the forever chemicals? PFAS? Just a thought

  • Gore-tex on low ankle shoes could be said to be a bit of a waste, as if it's raining it'll come in from the top.

    • +2

For running, yes. For walking around in wet weather with rain paints on they work fine in my experience.

    • I have the black ones of these they worked well during rain and in mud and river crossings, even on the beach waves coming in as long as it was below the ankle was completely fine. Though I usually wear long pants for hiking especially if it's forecast to raining.

  • Are these same sizes as asics nimbus kayano just need ro work out sizes
    When offer expires?

    • have both kayanos and pegs….nike seems to run narrower in my experience. ordering a size up doesn't always fix the fit for some people

      • use to sell running shoes 15 years ago and that was the case then, just like NB were good for those with wide feet.

  • I don't mind the colour, but I have new balance, Adidas and under armour trail shoes.

    I think enoughs enough lol

Running out of storage room for shoes I never wear bahah

    • This is the way.

    • +1

make sure you wear them all regularly. shoes in storage for a few years will just fall apart when you pull them out. Its a moisture thing with the rubber and glue.
if you wear them once a month it should help you avoid the issue.

      • I stock up on the runners I like when they're really cheap, sometimes sitting in their box for a couple of years. Have never experienced the issues you have described.

        • +1

Lucky you. Ive lost out on a few pairs. It might be my warmer climate that doesnt help the situtation.
But check out hydrolysis and shoes and take care to avoid it. Its a big problem in the collector shoe market.
          https://www.google.com/search?q=Hydrolysis+shoes&client=ms-a…

          • @DarwinBoy: Ahh yeah probably far worse in Darwin!

I don't know anything about collector shoes tbh, I'm as far removed from that market as possible.

  • Anyone who genuinely thinks an ankle high shoe (made of literally anything) is going to keep feet dry, in the rain, while excercising, deserves to pay twice the price.

    • Yeah agree, 'whilst exercising' is the key.

I can't think of anything worse than running in goretex runners in Sydney conditions. Apart from drainage issues your feet just get far too hot.

If I lived in a very cold climate I may change my mind.
