Citi AU App - Saying I Have a Rooted/Jailbroken Phone (I Don't)

Since the last update (Dec 2022) the Citi AU comes up with an error saying I have a rooted/jailbroken phone, which I DEFINITELY do not have, and that the phone may not be secure.

The error is similar to this one posted on Reddit (last sentence wording is a bit different but error code is correct). https://www.reddit.com/r/PHCreditCards/comments/z5sonl/i_jus…

I have also turned off developer options.

Has anyone else had this issue?

    Latest update installed?

    Custom firmware? ( unless ios)

Checked for malware? (More android specific)

    Boot loader been unlocked?

  • Yeah got latest Samsung update and Citi AU app.
Using Samsung Z Flip3 - bought new so unmodified.

Don't think I'm using custom firmware.

I have Malwarebytes so don't THINK I have a malware issue - but anyway I can be sure?

Disable it, Malwarebytes will be blocking access to the security APIs the Citi AU app is checking ;)

Lots of poorly coded apps don't expect anti-malware apps to be running :/

      • Why is it acceptable for a large bank like Citi to have a poorly coded app? Should that not make me concerned about my account with them?

Uninstalled it. Didn't fix the issue :-(

        • Citi is still debugging, meanwhile I use UBank.

I have been experiencing this issue since July 2022 and have Official firmware installed.

However, mine says that I have Magisk installed on my phone

    I don't have any anti-malware apps installed.

When I contacted Citibank about it they just said that they would make a note of my issues and investigate it.

    • Did it get resolved for you?

Just bought new phone and also receiving Magisk error.

  • Go to the branch and tell them?

    • Bold move to think that Citibank have multiple branches one can visit

      • maybe hound nab until they fix it.

  • I just had same problem. basically had magisk downloaded, (but phone not rooted because I cannot get my phone to root) Deleting app didn't help. Had to restart phone, and delete citi app, (and redownload citi app) and disable adblock

    • Just uninstalled adblock and reinstalled Citibank. Still not working :-(

      • did you try restarting the phone before reinstalling citi app?

and sure nothing like magisk on phone (even apk stored or any file or that sort) ?

What about settings in developer options - bootloader unlocked ? or may be USB debugging enabled ?

If still nothing I doubt you will eventually have to try resetting your phone

  • I had the same problem, Google brought me here ha! I uninstalled, shutdown my mobile, and install again and it worked. But this is a few weeks after first try with same error as screenshot, who knows what else Android/Google Play did or update or what not. No magic nor rooted nor adblock. Samsung mobile.

I figured out a work around for the error message after discovering I had this issue today.
It seems to work for me often enough, and I'm able to view account balance, set up OTP etc.

    • Open Citi AU App
    • While it's loading (before the error shows up), turn off screen/lock phone
    • Turn on screen and use pin to unlock phone. (Face unlock doesn't seem to work)
    • App should load to the login UI rather than show the error.

If the error shows up, close the app and try again.

Above works on my Pixel 4 XL, on stock android 11. I have my phone set to lock instantly when I press the power button.

It's absolutely ridiculous that this even works.
    As usual, YMMV.

OMG it works! After 4 painful months of this issue, thank you thank you thank you!

It looks like you need to do this every time, but at least if you mess up once, you can just close the app and try again.
For a moment there, i thought it locks the app and would require a reinstall, but it doesn't seem that smart.

This is such a wonderful workaround! :-D

      • Yep, works for me. Cheers!

As for logging back into the phone. It doesn't seem to matter what method I use (pin, pattern, fingerprint) as long as I leave a few seconds before doing so. I use fingerprint, and if I press it immediately I still get the jailbroken error. Wait a little and Citi loads up fine. I won't use face recognition, so not sure about that.

Many thanks for this. I shouldn't be getting an error but at least I can use the app now.

    • Hm doesn't seem to work for me, dang

      • Update: if I spam tap the area where the login button is and get it before the jailbroken page then it loads my fingerprint authentication and then logs me in. I'm on Android, YMMV

        • Yeah, works here too. It's actually quicker so long as you hit where the login button is. Good find as well

Wonder what it is with the app.

          • @Caerus: Yes thank you works for me too, ridiculous bug

            • @aaron3: Bummer not sure if it's just me but this method doesn't work anymore, the login button disappears in a flash while it's loading

              • @Untalentedllama: Occasionally (<1% of the time) that also happens to me but the workaround starts working again after a few hours

This was fixed for me by version 15.6.7 of the Citi App

    • Can confirm - fixed for me too! Yay

  • I'm having this problem too now :( is there any solution yet?

  • I've worked it out.
    - update to latest Citi app in app store
    - turn off USB debugging under Dev options.

I can't update the main post but this fixed all my problems.

    • I have S24 Ultra.

My fix everytime it errors is to clear cache.

Open the app and quickly press powerbutton to lock screen, then unlock screen with code and then can login to the app normally again until it logs off
