Western Digital 18TB WD Gold Enterprise Class Internal Hard Drive - 7200 RPM Class, SATA 6 Gb/s, 512 MB Cache, 3.5" - WD181KRYZ

30/1 update: small price increase to $621.89.

Stumbled across this while comparing to the WD Red Pro and it seems comparable to previous deals for those who want the advantages of gold.

The 'Buy 2, save 5%' is a trap for anything over $500 as it means you exceed the import duty threshold at checkout and in the case of 18TB Gold add $189.40 to the total.

A few data points to compare with.

Buy 2 Model Price AUD AUD/TB
X 16TB Red Pro 841.55 26.30
16TB Red Pro 442.92 27.68
18TB Red Pro 553.65 30.76
18TB Gold 615.39 34.19
16TB Gold 616.93 38.56

Personally i'm waiting for the Red Pro to go below 500 and then pull the trigger on the buy 2 and save.
Also from my experience the the Gold can be a bit noisy and wouldn't recommend for living spaces.

Whats the reliability of shipping quality from US to AUS, if i buy 2 drives are they gping to ship them loose (like most amazon packets) or do they pack them properly with bubble wrap?

    • I plan to keep thease for 10yrs turn over constant on

    • I bought 2 wd gold 8tb drive from Amazon us before. From memory, they are placed in cardboard tray so all the impact should be absorbed. I have had the disk running for 4 years now. No issue

      • Hmm cardbboard tray… The WD gold has extra shock protection and bigger warranty. Id pay the extra shipping protection if i could im fussy since i had data loss once. But a backup is allways my plan

        • Any shipping protection covered by warranty?

@BinChicken69: Yep, in case this happens, you will need to send them back to US, Amazon gives you refund and you place new orders

Good deal six months ago but 18TB Exos can now be had for a hair under $600 from Computer Alliance (also been on their eBay with various coupons shaving more off) or Mwave. Properly packed and certainty over the 5 year warranty.

Meanwhile anyone after really good discounts from buying overseas stock might be best off waiting for a group buy.

  • Hmm… If you go direct to Amazon US, https://www.amazon.com/dp/B089S3CZ41

It says $389.99 USD plus $12.28 delivery to Australia.

    So ~$562 AUD?

18 and 20TB hard drives should be dropping in price with 22tb out now. So hopefully in the next month or two you'll see some lower prices

    • I have been holding out for that, keeping positive thoughts that cheaper prices happen.

Quite expensive given that equivalent spec Exos drives have been recently selling for under $600, and even as low as $469. There is no reason to be paying $600+ for 18TB enterprise class HDDs any more.

    • I just returned two Seagate 18tbs because they had errors and would freeze when copying. So i understand why they're selling cheap

      • I have 15 Seagates in my file server right now, a mix of Ironwolfs and Exos drives running 24/7 for 3 years with no issues. To be fair any HDD from any manufacturer can have issues, its why warranties are important, especially local ones. In this case, these WD golds are from Amazon US, making warranty an issue.

        • Well majority of failures are on Seagate compared to WD, from all the forums and comments. Of course WD have some but definitely a higher percentage from Seagate. Their QC is poor. Every drive I've had of theirs has failed (8 - internal, external, portable) Amazon US has better returns than Amazon AU! Out of all stores I dont think there's anyone better. Last time I buy a Seagate, its the only reason you need good returns. Buy a WD and dont need to worry about returns or warranty.

          • @Whisper Quiet: Never had luck with Seagate either.

Just returned a 10tb to Amazon. To be fair I expect that was due to the packaging or lack there of.

Bought a wd from umart instead.
