Toyota Camry Engine RPM Revving Issue

Hi everyone, I have a 1998 Toyota Camry Vienta V6.

I am facing an issue, when I am turning on the AC after a few minutes of driving the RPM starts goes up and down. If I accelerate a little bit hard then the revving stops. While driving the AC off, the car runs fine without any issue. previously the thermostat was on Stuck Close position which I changed recently. Also, the engine coolant changed recently.

Any suggestion will be really appreciated. Thanks

Yes, take to the mechanic to get a proper diagnosis.

      But they're closed today…

      • There's tomorrow.. (unless this)…..

  • Using the AC draws power from the motor so you will see a dip in RPM but it should recover shortly thereafter.

Maybe the idle air control valve and the throttle body needs a clean. Pretty simple DIY job.

    This,
Have you tried leaving the air conditioner on and starting with it on,
I must admit with modern cars these days we dont bother turning off our AC any more.

  • ok, best to join toyotanation. quick response and good knowledge. When you changed coolant, did you bleed as well? Might have air in the system and it's getting it out. Can just open the plastic overflow cap and look for bubbles. Or open the rad cap and "burp" by squeezing the top hose. Refill coolant as needed and use cloths around the cap to prevent spills. Also helps to turn the heater on full while draining coolant or do this now. If it's not very hot, may be a blockage. Also check air filter + clean maf sensor. Then IACV valve…. Needs to be cleaned every so often .

Just saw your last post op.

Don't bother helping folks. Post and ghost.

  • Is this a new thing? Something you haven’t encountered before with this car?

It’s normal when the car is idling for the engine revs to change as the air conditioner compressor is turns on and off. A few hundred rpm would be normal.

Also when idling the radiator fans may kick on and off chain going the sound of the engine.

  • Sell the car, get a toyota in 2010s onward with many things electric.

  • Idle bypass needs a clean and adjustment.
