David Jones American Express Credit Card Partnership Ending

After being hit with legal action from ASIC over the way in which David Jones AmEx cards were advertised and distributed to customers (with many apparently complaining that they confused their credit cards for a loyalty card), David Jones and AmEx have announced that their card partnership is ending. See https://www.americanexpress.com/en-au/customer-service/david… for further information

New card applications are not being accepted. Current DJs AmEx and DJs Platinum AmEx Cards will function for now and continue to earn points but will be withdrawn at some future point and unsure what the options will be following this

David Jones is a sinking ship so they would have pulled out anyway. Anchorage bought the entire brand for $100 million, I'm pretty sure if OZB users pooled together we could have scrummed up $100 million to buy it. Anchorage is going to leave the brand with a lot of bad debt soon.

    • The bought the market st and Elizabeth st stores. Sold the market street for a good sum. Purchase was never about retail but the land holdings in various cities. Unlike myer

      • That wasn't by Anchorage. That was by Woolworths Holdings Limited, who ruined DJs.

        • You’re right, I didn’t remember Woolworths selling it. At least anchorage has a few landholdings I hope? Woolworths South Africa did ruin DJ’s

After today on OzBargain I'm beginning to wonder that myself. There's some really really stupid people around.

"Apparently" complaining that they confused their credit cards for a loyalty card is a pretty cynical take. The ACCC has more than enough evidence that consumers were actively and intentionally mislead by these companies to initiate legal action on the issue.

This is not a case of stupid people doing stupid things. It's a case of credit cards being actively pushed by shop assistants to consumers who were simply trying to buy a shirt and where reading the fine print would potentially involve holding up a long line of similar shoppers.

People looking for a new credit card typically expect to go to a bank, not the DJs checkout counter.

Grocer Woolies tried them with some hardware sales:
Ah -mex was part of their failure.

  • Wow, interesting. I had the old store card and then they ended that program when they partnered with Amex and anyone with the old store card was treated like shit and you were in no man’s land for service as DJs no longer had a credit department and Amex had to handle you but they hated you because you weren’t making them any money and you couldn’t even get an online account to check your transactions and everything was paper based which was a nightmare when I moved house and they failed to update my address properly then accused me of not paying a $50 bill because they sent it to the wrong address and never once bothered to call me when I didn’t pay it.

The Amex card was never a great option as the benefits were very limited and you were better off just to use your standard Amex card. If you look at store credit cards in the US like the Saks or Nordstrom or Bloomingdales cards, the benefits are so much better. It’s depressing how much they try to screw consumers here.

    Good riddance to Amex.

The crowd that bought DJs owned Dick Smith.
Use your credit vouchers now people.
Wait for it all to crash and burn.

    • DJ isn't going to burn and crash. A bit sensationist? You could have migrated onto the Amex store card when they had them early on. It would have been all online and wouldn't have costed you a cent. Now Amex is gone, its taken over by Latitude. Probably a worse off option as they are a much smaller company with likely even fewer benefits.

  • Looks like DJ Amex ends this March 24.

You can still use your card until end of June I believe. The new card launches March 12 so there'll be two types of DJs cards for a few months.

David Jones Amex card is a rip-off by a bunch of thieves - they've given me 10 days notice advising they are closing my card. Advising me, that in this time I have to redeem my points (8000) and change all the direct debit accounts I have in place (15-20 when you count utilities for two properties, mbl phones, school fees, streaming services, medical, house, car and pet insurances etc).

Unfortunately my 8000 points (equivalent to $40) is below the minimum 10,000 to secure a $50 giftcard, so I like 1000's of others are probably forfeiting $$$ to Amex.

But the worst part is, I pay an annual $99 membership fee for this service and asked for a refund but was told that only a pro-rata refund is available within 9 months of the membership period - as my membership has just ticked past the 9 months limit, they suggested I'm not entitled to a refund.

When I explained to the Muppet, that I'm not the party initiating a refund request - and that I'm only seeking compensation for a service I had previously paid for, that AMEX is no longer honouring, the Muppet quickly receded back into his shell!

So I've lodged a complaint with AMEX and following what I imagine will be a predictable decision, will be then be going to the financial industry ombudsman. How much is this going to cost these idiots?

And instead of AMEX thinking here's an opportunity for picking up some customers because David Jones is moving to Latitude, they're treating their existing customers like crap.

  • So how do people find best ways to do with dj amex points. I guess tranfer to say qantas point isnt worthy.

    • Buy stuff at DJs with the points
