Can a Telstra Locked Oppo A16s Pre-Paid Phone Be Used with Boost Mobile?

Hi,

Last time this question was asked on the forum (that I can find in a search) was back in March 2020, I just wanted to confirm that nothing has changed before advising a friend to purchase a Boost sim.

The phone recently purchased from Telstra store - Oppo A16s linked to below:

All help appreciated.

  • Why not skip the middle man and ask telstra?

The phone owner (elderly lady) was apparently told by Telstra that the phone will only work with Telstra.

Frankly I don't trust Telstra to advise whether a Boost sim would work or not.

        Yes.

A Boost sim will work in a Telstra locked Oppo. I have used those free Boost sims on a Telstra locked A54 and a Telstra branded Alcatel.

Probably because it is easier and quicker to get an nswer on OZB rather than wait 2-3 hours on hold with Telstra?

Telstra will say no , even if it's a yes.

  • to be honest boost is actually owned by telstra.

IMO even stuff like woolies, aldi, mobile etc MVNOs would also probably work in that telstra locked phone

    • boost is actually owned by telstra.

      no it's not.

      who told you that?

      • Why then is everything shared between Telstra and boost (try calling boost Technical support, you get telstra)?
Why then Boost numbers also works with google assistant calling feature (when its meant to be only Telstra) ?
Why then have I heard people able to sign up to telstra rewards etc, from boost number ?

It is essentially similar to like how Jetstar is owned by Qantas.

        • Why then
          Why then
          Why then

Because that is their agreement, that Telstra will exclusively provide those services for Boost.

It does not mean they own Boost.

Boost is listed as a privately owned company.

Show me where on the Telstra annual report is shows Boost as being one of their companies…

When I paid for my boost recharge:

You've sent a payment of $200.00 AUD to Telstra Corporation Limited

It is quite clear that Boost is not owned by Telstra.

The new 10-year agreement to expand the longstanding relationship with Telstra will be the foundation for even further growth for Boost Mobile.

“This is a major moment in Boost Mobile’s history as we further expand our longstanding relationship with Telstra,” says Peter Adderton, Founder of Boost Mobile.

“For more than 20 years now, ever since we started the company on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, we have been all about fighting for the consumer, making sure everyday Aussies get a great deal and a great service.

“It is recognition by Telstra of the value that Boost Mobile brings to their business and the importance of our role in the market more broadly.

        • Yep, Telstra provide the service on behalf of Boost.

          I'm sure it's a nice little earner for them…

    • That just says Telstra will service Boost customers.
It is part of their agreement as an MVNO on the Telstra network.

Telstra does not own Boost. It is a privately owned company…

I just wanted to confirm that nothing has changed before advising a friend to purchase a Boost sim.

    The sim costs $2.

    Try it…

    • A non-technical 80 year old lady will be porting her number across with me on the other end of the phone if required, I only want it to be done once and as quickly and simply as possible.

From the comments it seems like nothing has changed.

Boost = Telstra Network Service so the phone shouldn't complain even if locked to the Telstra network.

Thank you to all those who contributed, much appreciated.

  • You can use a Boost SIM in a Telstra prepaid phone.

    • Thank you for that, next time I see her I'll give that a go.

It depends on when it was actually purchased.

If it was purchased in 2021, likely won’t work BUT if it was purchased in 2022 onwards, it will likely work

If you want op, you can pm me the imei and I can check on the network the status of the handset
