Loss of Windows Office 2007 from my computer

Our computer approx. 1/12 ago suddenly lost Windows Office 2007.Don't know why it happened and Adobe reader also doesn't work. I am not a computer buff and only know the basics. Would there be anyone out there who could help me and suggest how I can get it back or an alternative? Thanks in anticipation!

  • does it still apear in add remove programs?

ie control panel> add remove programs

  • Yes it still appears to be there and adobe too1

    • Okay so maybe the software just has a problem, can you reinstall it, maybe try with adobe reader first.

Usually when software starts playing around its usually related to viruses etc, have you got an anti virus scanner, if so maybe update and run a scan, could be a good idea.

    • was that a legit copy ?
if not Microsoft have ways to disable it after number for certain warnings
If it is legit version, could be a virus or accidentally remove, you can download it for free from Microsoft
If it is not try free versions like http://www.openoffice.org/
They are very good and free

  • Hi and thanks for replying-To reinstall would I need to find the original installation disc as that could be a problem and pardon my ignorance but would that also apply to adobe reader?

  • most likely a virus. try avast, a very good free antivirus program.

    • My first thought was most likely they just deleted the shortcut off the desktop.

  • I have free AVG anti virus and it scans every day and doesn't seem to indicate a problem? for past year-no virus warnings!

    • Well, just because a person who has HIV has no visible symptoms, doesn't mean he's healthy…

Better safe than sorry — do a complete virus scan using one or 2 different AV products just to be sure.

Use the free virus scanner @ Kaspersky Labs or Trend Micro's Housecall.

To get Office back, you can do a repair installation and see if that brings back the program.

If problems still persist, it may be easier and less time consuming to just reinstall Windows or restore to an earlier system backup, if you have one.

Avg is not so good anymore, especially the free version. Its okay, if you dont mind your msn being hacked etc

I'm not suggesting you do or don't have a virus, but just because your antivirus is not telling you you have a virus, that doesn't necessarily make it the case. If a virus or trojan lands at your computer before your antivirus has downloaded the update to cover it, it will often disable the antivirus from doing so, so you don't realise it's there until you discover you have problems.

    Produkey download/installer = http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/produkey_setup.exe
It should hopefully be able to recover your key so you can download Office 2007 from ( http://www.microsoft.com/office/downloads/ ) and use that software to find the version and make a safe copy of the key because you will need it to reinstall office.

edit, see a couple of posts up above mine too. It kind of explains this.

  • Virus

    • Run Trend Micro Housecall to be on the safe side.

  • Westpac is still offering Bitdefender for free if you know anyone with an account.

  • Dear Scrimshaw ,how do I do a repair installation? and I have uninstalled AVG and am installing Trends micro housecall. I know if you have 2 many anti virus versions on your computer it will slow it down. What would you suggest I need to protect my computer? Thanks in anticipation1

    • how do I do a repair installation

This option comes up when you choose to uninstall the software via Control Panel.

You can also do it by downloading a Trial version of Office using links provided above, and then reinstalling it. It should detect a previous version that's already installed and offer you to repair or modify the installation.

. I know if you have 2 many anti virus versions on your computer it will slow it down.

Ehhh. I never told you to uninstall AVG…

Either way, Housecall is an on-demand anti virus remover. It is not a resident antivirus which runs in the background and offers no active protection — so you should keep a resident AV installed. I recommend Avast Home or Avira Free.

  • OK scrimshaw, I hear you-I have installed AVAST uninstalled AVG and have installed open office because I can't find original Office 2007 Disc to reinstall on computer. I tried repair to no avail. Thanks for your help and to everyone else for their help and input.

  • Scot, maybe due to some reason (virus?), your file associations might have got dis- associated, just try going into c:\program files and find Office folder… Try running exe file of MSWord from there….
