Microsoft Surface Pro 9 with i5/8GB RAM/256GB SSD $1497 + Delivery ($0 to Metro Areas/ C&C/ in-Store) @ Officeworks

530

SP9 8/256GB only $1497 at Officeworks online. This is actually listed at $100 less than catalogue price - looks like an input error as it’s printed as $1597 in the catalogue and similar price at most other retailers.

Great deal if you’re in the market for this model, I don’t expect it’ll be priced this way for long!

Don't forget 3% cashback on Ultimate Everyone gift cards via Shopback app, bringing this to ~$1452.09. (if you're able to pay in store, not sure if this can be used online at OW)

EDIT: just checked, looks like you can use it online for OW, but issue is 1k limit at shopback. :(

  • Coming up at $1548 through ms direct student pricing so good deal

  • Do windows still require an additional antivirus software

windows defender is enough for anyone with a tiny bit of common sense

on the off chance you got some studborn adware download malwarebytes and that always take care of them, remember to uninstall it after or it just becomes an adware of its own

      Kaspersky cloud is free

And of course, then you get to share your data with a Russian company that i am sure doesn't use it for internet trolling and identifying individuals that might help with promoting social discord, disinformation etc…

I would say malwarebyte is a must have on my list of softwares. Highly recommend it.

z13 also dropped to 1799$ at jb if someone wanted a beefier (proper H45 12500h, 16gb/512gb ssd but you lose out on the panel) spec on a similiar -abeit still heavier - 13' 2in1 tablet w/detachable keyboard form factor.

this should be enough for most folks of course, and screen is much nicer.

    • +2

Great point, also z13 includes keyboard + pen so price is almost equivalent

Just as ridiculous as Apple with "Pro" in the name but only 8GB of RAM.

  • this OR Surface Pro 7+

SP9 obviously a lot more expensive but the first to improve on repairability, if that matters to you.

I really wish these came in AMDs power efficient skews.

      • +1

idk if I can justify spending 700$ more for
        - 26% more multi-core performance
        - 120hz VS 60hz
        - better looking display (less bezel)
        - better reparability

        • +2

It's true that they're very expensive for the specs, especially without including input devices (and charging through the roof for them). But they're fairly unique in the space.

Personally, I do find the large bezels and lower quality screen to be rather big factors when considering the older models. I think the SP8 briefly went for about $1100; that might have been a nice compromise.

Buy both if you can afford

Why do they make these with 8gb in 2023? Do they hate their customers? They're dog slow with 8gb but quite good with 16gb.

    • Greed

    • All manufacturers make thin and light laptops with 8GB Ram in the base config, fits their business model I guess.

Also, 8GB isn't as bad as people make it out to be. Can run a few general applications* (e.g. Word etc.) and a web browser (with a few tabs) without any hiccups. It only slows down when you run out of Ram and starts paging.

*If you're using this for work and running a Teams call with other apps open then it will slow down. 16GB minimum for that scenario to avoid lag.

    • maybe u dont realise but most people using these dont need 16gb

      • heaps of people use multiple tabs.

        • yes people buy 16gb $1000++ laptops for opening multiple tabs

          • +1

@Freestyle: Well, yes. Lots of office workers sit in Outlook/Word/Teams and a couple of dozens browser tabs all day and find 8gb to be very frustrating.

    8gb ram is an embarrassment.

My wife purchased the SP8 i5/16/256gb and the battery life is atrocious, 4 hours screen on time. I don’t have high hopes for this one if you intend on using it as a “portable” device.

    • I have the same and I get min 6 hours. Has she checked task manager to see if there are power hungry processes/programs running in the background?

      • I've checked tskmgr and there's nothing to indicate excessive battery drain. I've done a recovery and clean install and in the last 24 hours on the battery usage report only netted 1 hr 33 min, long call from the 16 hours they advertised, also significantly worse than the SP3 previously that lasted 8 hours easy.

    • +1

i get 4 hours after 2.5 years of use on my 7 so u either doing intensive tasks or lying

      • +1

Its 1 year old and only gets 1hr 33 min SoT, I don't think YouTube or web browsing is considered intensive, but thanks for the assumption…

        • +2

You may have one or more faulty cells. That SOT is attrocious even by thin and light standards. It's also a farcry from the endurance reported by many reviewers of the product. I suggest making a warranty claim sooner rather than later.

    • -1

I get wayyyyyyy more than that on my SP8. I don't even bother taking a charger with me most of the time.

      • +1

        That's the pipe dream.

        • The only thing I can guess is your wife has screen brightness cranked 100% the whole time.

You might want to also check the power plan is on balanced/auto.

          • +1

@gavincato: Its all on recommended battery setting and 50% brightness. It's most likely a hardware issue, working with M$ to resolve it.

  • 16gb is a bare minimum…

  • Lots of comments about the small amount of ram (understandably). Is it possible to increase the RAM yourself? (It's soldered on isn't it?)

    • nah

      • Nah to which question??

        • +1

sorry for that. its not possible to upgrade ram as it is soldered on.

  • +4

Windows 11 with 8GB of RAM is great if you are a masochist.

    • my daughters primary school recommended ACER laptops for the kids running Window 11 and the specs are (Celeron, 4GB RAM, 64GB ssd) for $650.. needless to say I bought a refurb Dell for $300 with 4 times the specs

  • +2

Strongly avoid anything under 16GB RAM and unless you REALLY need a hand held tablet, dont buy one of these, stick to ultrabooks or flipbooks.

    • "stick to ultrabooks or flipbooks" - care to expand on this?

      • +1

like it says, unless you have some sort of reason to use a microsoft surface book, like walking around and taking notes while you walk, or drawing on it like a graphics tablet with a pen, i think a regular type of laptop is a far better machine, either a thin ultrabook like an x1 carbon, or t14s or a flipbook where the hinge folds all the way back like a thicker tablet, like the lenovo yoga, they are faster and better value for almost all other purposes, the surface books are a poorly designed laptop for most purposes imo other than these couple of very specific use cases, an ipad with a keyboard is probably a better machine for those use cases as well.

        • I understand where you're coming from. The idea of such a hybrid Windows device remains compelling. I tried it with an iPad Pro for a while and found it sorely lacking; basic computing tasks like file management may as well be a foreign language to iOS.
