Alternative for a Toyota RAV4 Hybrid Car

Hi I have got a Toyota RAV4 hybrid on order and have been waiting since the past 13 months and have contacted the dealer and by the looks of it, I’d look likes it will take another 4-6 months before the car may be delivered/in for production god knows.

With Covid and other factors like semiconductor supply issues, factories shutting down obviously the car industry Toyota in our case have been struggling big time. I am just reaching out the OzB community to see what are some other possible options (HYBRID) people would suggest over Toyota.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

You won't get a hybrid inside 4-6 months

Stick with the order, get the RAV4

Could get that mg phev, way better than a rav4 😉

      • -2

        Ah huh…

        • +2

Resale would be incredible as well, so many benefits.

      • -2

As an MG PHEV owner, I endorse this statement

(Despite spackbace's ongoing resevations, it's a fantastic car!)

        • +11

Sorry, I was being sarcastic. I'd wait the 4 months and get the RAV4.

        • +1

PHEV is plug-in hybrid ev with ice yeah?

For the money of Rav4 Hybrid , you could get the new 2023 MG ZS EV.

          • +1

@dcep: I got the PHEV specifically for the flexibility - being rural I still need the range of petrol but I now also get the benefits of an EV for 90% of trips.

Last fill up of fuel was 35L, over 1400km of range!

Pity the rav4 doesn't have the PHEV available to Australia as it'd make a killing.

            • @Switchblade88: Thats cause they know fools and their money are quickly parted when it comes to the toyota badge.

    • Not unless you want to pay over RRP for a 'used' one with 50 clicks on the dial (in the case of the Corolla hybrid)

    • we've been shopping for cars at the moment, we've found plenty of new Kia Niro Hybrids in stock ready to go. not sure how they compare to the Rav but the boot was too small for us

  • +3

The Rav4 line is a very popular small car for a reason. If you want the Rav4 you should probably get it.

    • +8

Since when is a RAV4 a small car?

      • It’s not it’s a medium size SUV

        • +3

Yeah I know that, hence my question.

          • @kerfuffle: I never said it was a small car I think this person above Austria Bargain mentioned this in their comment ?

      • Wikipedia says it is a "compact crossover SUV".

        • +1

It hasn't been small since probably 2004 or so.

          • +2

@brendanm: It shrinks if you wash it with cold water.

          • @brendanm: You should update the Wikipedia article if the Rav4 should not be in that class of vehicle.

            • +1

@AustriaBargain: The original couple of models were compact. The later ones aren't. Wikipedia is full of incorrect things, that's just how it is.

        • +2

It’s only ‘compact’ if you are from the USA - which is where a lot of English language internet info is biased towards.

I have a RAV4 Hybrid and if i were to have to look at getting something else on the market currently, Id go Kona Electric.

Driven it for work, easy driving, very comfortable and stupid friendly (which, for me, is necessary as the more technology a car gets, often the more complex they become but the Kona doesn't).

It doesn't ride as high as a RAV and it does have a different breaking system being electric but once you're used to it, it's a sweet ride.

I woukd have suggested Ionic 5 but it too is suffering wait times + stupid pricing. Wait for series 2 if keen.

  • +1

After coming from the USA. The RAV4 is definitely a small SUV.

      • Medium is still small if that makes any sense. Looking online it looks like the Rav4 is about 30cm shorter than a camry, given its a hatch i guess. USA marker probably tends more to the larger SUV models and super utes.

my mate is still waiting for a kia carnival been 14 months also and without a definite answer, so expect this with all new cars…

I have a Rav4 Hybrid, i bought one as soon as it came out with this new model and went to all the local dealerships to find stock. got lucky :)

If you already waited 13 months, just keep waiting.

I think its quite possible Toyota will suspend Rav4 hybrid orders, as the wait times are pushing up beyond 2.5 years.

Could be worse though, the 70 series cruiser is up to 4 years and is no longer available to order

    • Current wait times:

      Rav4 Hybrid 12-24 months
      Camry Hybrid 12-24 months
      Landcruiser 300 series 12-18 months

      https://www.carexpert.com.au/car-news/toyota-rav4-landcruise…

Toyota is increasing capacity to build more cars throughout 2023. Rising interest rates globally will reduce demand, so that should also help ease current wait times.

      • Rav4 Hybrid 12-24 months
        Camry Hybrid 12-24 months

Longer than that in some markets…

  • +3

I'm guessing the waiting time is spec specific? My mum ordered a Rav Hybrid and got it within 6 months. It was delivered just before Xmas.

    • I guess she didn't order a Cruiser AWD

  • +1

Just wait got mine coming next week. I’m at 13 months

  • +2

With Covid and other factors like semiconductor supply issues

So things that should no longer be an issue, but companies like to keep blaming.

  • You've done the hard waiting. I would personally just wait after those 13 months down the drain. You could opt for the European SUV's as they are not selling as well if the wait is getting to ya. Though as always the popular models will need to wait anyways.

  • Honda HRV Hybrid.Around a 10 month wait.

  • Volvo's Polestar?

  • +3

We lost patience on the Rav decided to go with Mitsubishi outlander phev. Great for daily local trips, get about 30k per electric charge but can use petrol for long haul and can recharge as you drive. Empty charge to full using normal electric plug in garage takes about 8 hours.

One was in stock in Brisbane we waited about 2 weeks to get it shipped to our dealer. May be a long wait now, not sure

    • Njoy!

  • +1

Wait for the RAV4, worth the wait. 163 kw with less than 5.5 l/100 km in normal driving.
The only downside I have is Mazda CX5 owners I know always have to sadly justify their choice.

    • The CX5 is a great car.

      Not sure why you're salty…?

  • Ditch the fossil, get a proper EV, charge it for free with your solar, forget about doing maintenance etc.
Similar size would be Model Y, or Ioniq 5.

  • What RAV4 badge/version did you order?

I have one on order too and the dealer said they make them in batches of badges. Like one production line will be making GX and another a cruiser. So they would make GX for a few weeks then change to GXL and so on.

So it's faster to get the base models is what the dealer says…

  • id get rid of the rav 4 and get a KIA more updated interior better handling in my opinion as i test drove a few of them better bang for buck and instock

  • +1

The MG haters need to accept that the brand is absolutely killing it. In 3 to 5 years time MG will be in the top 3 passenger vehicle sales, up there with Jap and Korean cars.

    • +1

They're doing the same thing as Kia did 10 years ago. Build 'average' cars and undercut the competition. This made then rather good value for money at the time, since you got 90% of the features for 50% of the price.

Kia then moved up into the market to compete with Mazda/Hyundai/Toyota but in doing so they gave up the lower price point of the market, but they didn't add extra features/premium bits to match the higher asking price.

For comparison, the Kia Niro PHEV and the MG HS PHEV were both $46k when I originally purchased but the MG had the extra luxury features (10" display, moonroof, electric tailgate, electric heated seats) as well as matching warranty and fuel economy from being PHEVs. MG might be making less profit but I'm the one now reaping the benefits…

      • agree, but Kia and Hyundai were still excellent value even 5 years ago, not so much now as they are as expensive if not more expensive than Toyota and Mazda.
I haven't driven an MG, but seeing heaps of them on the road. I am sure 7 year warranty helps too…
