I wouldn't pay this much for a watch, but I can still see that the Ultra is incredible value for what you get. Titanium case, sapphire glass, largest (and brightest) screen on a smart watch by far, excellent battery life, actually accurate health tracking, 100m water resistance, depth gauge and water temperature sensor, dual-frequency GPS, really useful smart features.

        Subjective really.

This watch will depreciate the moment you put it on your wrist, unlike a "traditional" collectors item watch.

I think you are paying premium for the name but I've learn that those who loves Apple products don't care about pricing and will sell their kidney .. literally.

        • In my experience (Samsung, Apple, Huawei), Apple Watches are the best on the market by far. The SE isn’t that expensive. I’d say they’re designed for useful functionality, not for holding value long-term. I think you get about 4-5 years use out of an Apple Watch. So far, I’ve gotten 2 years out of my Apple Watch 3, which cost me $120 secondhand. It was probably 2 years old when I bought it. I still find it really useful, especially the accurate step count and heart rate, weather, notifications, ability to send/reply to text messages and emails simply by talking, stopwatch and timers. It saves me having to pull my phone out all the time.

      • "Incredible" is pushing it given you can get all of those bar the apple ecosystem on devices that cost a lot less.

        • It depends if you're talking about sports/health tracking or smart functionality. Apple watches provide both. In addition, the Ultra provides ruggedness and the best display (largest/brightest) on a smart watch.

        • +1

am genuinely curious about those options, do you have examples?

          • +1

@slowmo: I use a Coros Apex. It is titanium and sapphire glass but they have fancier models too with better build. Battery life would leave this (and most anything) for dead when used to record exercise. It has a barometer and altimeter of course too and all the other required running sensors! It's not a smart watch though :)
Just because it's fresh in my mind and for some context on how good the battery is. I've misplaced my charger on holidays. Using the device only for running I've covered 24km and battery has dropped from 13 to 6%! Mine is 2+ years old too. It's truly incredible.

@drprox: thanks for answering!. i think some of those things that makes apple watch and apple watch was being excluded in the original post, so that might have skewed the impression that it's just those features. that said, I am not defending apple, luckily you took my question in good faith, as I found out that there's another type of watch that is a suitable replacement for an old garmin one that i have as well as a relative. :)

i know what to get them for their birthday now. :)

re: apple watch, i see value in it, but maybe not like others, I just use the watch as an extension of my wallet, so i don't bring my cards out. I use it to make calls, and drive home automation when i'm outside.
my peers would rather go for a 25k collectable watch, for me, 1-2k just look 'cheap' in terms of hobbies.

              • +1

@slowmo: Oh yeah to each their own! The apple can't even be a consideration for me as I'd need to change phones too so it's doubly expensive!

The thing I find a little funny about the ultra I guess (and make no mistake I'm happy it exists as maybe it'll lead to a smart watch I can use) is the technical feature set is aimed at Apple using elite endurance athletes but I can't believe they'd actually use one for any serious event. They'd use a Garmin or Coros as there exist hardier build options and vastly better battery life. You wouldn't risk misrecording your 50 miler running with an apple watch!

    Good deal! Thanks.

    Nice one op

Make sure your apple watch does not call police .

holy cow that's insane. I would sh!t my pant if a swat team raid my place.
However my watch did accidentally made a few "emergency call" when I do weigh lifting but nothing has even happened. I reckon the police must have a way to tell if it's a fake call.

Watch is too smart for its own good.

        • smart phones are too smart for their own good tbh, what we have in our pockets today are essentially mini PCs with modems, but that's too nerdy to stomach for a lot of people. ;)

if you see smart watches as an eventual replacement for a smart phone, it'll make sense.

imo smart watches have come quite far from the original galaxy watch running tizen that i owned.

the original galaxy watch was a hot pile of mess. circa around the time while i was still quite active in android rom/root things. between the things i see and the entire decade have passed with samsung doing F-A about updates… i gave up their entire ecosystem. i rather deal with a pixel today than touch a samsung again.

    • +3

The trainer said he was wearing his Apple Watch while holding pads for his client and the pressure of the button against his wrist must have activated Siri.

He just needs to flip it over so the button is on the left (for people who wear it on their left wrist).

      • +1

this is a no-brainer, there's even documents on apple that tells you how to do it.

  • while delivered costs is low, please be aware that that is 'best effort' / 'good luck with that mate' tier of "insurance".

costs will go higher if you are worried about 1k of something in transit.

OOS in many places and only 1 C&C.

  • +4

Of course Apple sell a $1500 smart watch.

  • +1

Serious Q, but, what can this do, that the Watch 5 Pro cannot?

    • +2

      apple pay.

      • yeah ok, but the cheaper apple watches can do apple pay too….

        • +2

well, you asked a question, i answered.

there are many comparison sites between apple watch to other apple watches including apple.com

same as to how you'd compare android smart watches. more features, more bells and whistles, bigger screen = more money. that's how it's always been working.

          • @slowmo: yeah, that's cool, I was just wondering if this watch has any super special features in particular at such high price, all good

            • @Ringu: tbh 1k doesn't buy anything super special nowadays, so i'm not sure where you are going with that.

inflation happened, people can afford a lot of things now (not rich, they mean different things) because lower barrier of buying something (afterpay etc etc)

samsung or any other business would be more than happy to increase the price if the market can bear it, regardless of their quality of their products.

look at all the fake energy QC and fire washing machines , do you think they end up reducing prices? people still buy those things.

apple being another big corp is going to of course charge the market for it, and people are willing to pay, if we are not willing to pay, then we are simply not their target market.

              simple.

            • +4

@Ringu: To answer your question of what's actually different:-

              • Rated to a higher military standard for Altitude, High Temperature, Low Temperature, Temperature Shock, Immersion, Freeze/Thaw, Shock, Vibration
              • Precision dual-frequency (L1 and L5) GPS - Regular Apple Watch only has L1 GPS
              • Larger screen with 2000 nits brightness
              • 100m water resistance (double regular Apple Watch) and 40m dive proof
              • EN13319 certification
              • Depth gauge with water temperature sensor
              • 86-decibel siren to attract attention up to 180m
              • Up to 36 hours battery (double regular Apple Watch)
              • Customisable Action button
              • Titanium finish rather than Aluminium/Stainless Steel
              • Dual speakers and three-mic array with beamforming

              https://www.apple.com/au/watch/compare/

    • A circular smart watch, how quaint.

    • +1

I love my Apple Watch Ultra - I upgraded from the Apple Watch Series 5 to this last year

Even my old one had Apple Pay - but this has a few main features I really like - like double the battery life, larger, better and brighter screen (this was the most important thing for me), much tougher case (titanium vs aluminium in my case)
It also has a bunch of other improvements which came about up to Series 8 (better GPS, updated sensors, new sensors like Thermometer and Blood Oxygen, faster CPU and so on)

      • i dislike the ultra watch bands.. and have always prefer a watch with a stainless steel body and band. probably will wait to see their next releases to see if there are major improvements.

        • +1

Yep there's not much choice in Ultra dedicated bands - there's only 3 types
          - the ocean one that's for divers and is designed to be worn over a wetsuit - so it's crap on bare arms
          - this alpine loop which looks nice but isn't good fitting (I find the specific loop points are either just too tight or too loose)
          - the trail loop which I have which now that I've worn it for a month or two is actually very comfortable

You can also always just use any of the existing bands for the 45mm series watch

          • @Remorhaz: is that the one with velcro band? there's something about using velcro doesn't sit right with me, disregarding the fact that the hooks wear out over time…. those specific hooks will hook onto my clothes and ruin it. (i use velcro cable ties a lot and i found out the hard way) so velcro is probably only acceptable to me as shoes fasteners (i'm lazy) if we are talking about clothing items.

i know you can use the more expensive bands from the watch x series.. but why would i? of the only 2 official stainless steel style available, one of it costs 500+ for just the band. If people are complaining about this watch, they should look at the price of that band alone, that's criminal.

i have the 'cheaper' one from an earlier gen before they introduced the 2nd band style.. but itself isn't cheap either, but due to size of the ultra's body, this earlier gen band is not going to look good or keep it in place.

alternative is to get the ultra and get a USD30 metal band from AliEx but to each their own preferences.

            • @slowmo: @slowmo - yes it is "velcro" but it's not at all like velcro cable ties - the velcro doesn't go out to the edge of the band so I've never had it catch on clothes or anything else

I meant you can use any older bands you may have (from any 44 or 45mm apple watches from the past) or any of their or third party current bands for that watch size

              • @Remorhaz: yeah. i did explore options like that even as an non-ultra owner for a long time.

the quality is just not the same. the amount of money i spent on AliEx could probably get me an original one. :D

maybe it's just my luck or maybe i'm expecting too much from 3rd parties.

                • @slowmo: Yep - I tried a fake Milano loop with my old apple watch and it was definitely not as good - but all the first party 44/45mm Apple Watch bands also fit the Ultra - so for example my various Apple original Sport and Nike bands I have (from my older 44 and 45mm Apple Watch's) all work fine

          • @Remorhaz: Surely there are 3rd-party options?

            • @andresampras: I'm sure - I just meant what was available from Apple (since you get to choose one which comes with the watch)

Still cheaper to stick up on discounted GCs from Coles or Woolies then buy from Apple

    • Yep, already got my Apple gift cards ready (that I purchased from Coles with 20x FlyBuys points/10% off effectively - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/748819).

Now I’m just wondering if I should wait for a higher percentage cashback deal to stack with even further? 🤔 Getting greedy! ☺️

  • Probably the cheapest I’ve ever seen the Apple Watch Ultra from an Australian retailer.

    Not even close.

This deal was the cheapest @ 15% off (+ further discounts using eBay GCs): https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/743506

  • Bought it for $1179 with eBay Plus $120 coupon and eBay Plus free postage last week. Arrived two days later, all perfect. I switched from Garmin fenix and so far I'm liking it much more than the Garmin.

I always find it funny that some people here diss the price of Apple products (haters gotta hate), but then think its perfectly fine to pay $700 for an Italian coffee grinder, or 1000k for a Breville dual boiler etc….

    Moral of the story…

A product has its value proposition to a particular customer

  • Such a cool colour and offer 🔥

  • Why not 1150? Did they saw my comment?

    javawoo on 07/01/2023 - 01:25
I bet there will be another deal at $1150 in 2 week

  • Costco options if people are interested.
    https://www.costco.com.au/Computers-Tablets-Mobile-Phones/Sm…

    • they don't have stocks

      • They do have some options.

  • Has anyone heard of Truephone? They have a yearly subscription for an Apple Watch esim that is independent of the iPhone cellular service. You pay $99 for a 12-month subscription plan,

    https://www.truphone.com/consumer/esim-for-watch/#plans

    • yeah, i'm aware of that, was looking for a 'smart watch as a phone' option with just a simple phone. the lack of roaming support killed my interest.
