$150 off on Your First Car Share Booking @ Turo

100
HOSTGIFT150

Was looking to book a car for the upcoming public holiday. This code was shared to give me $150 on my first booking.

Valid for bookings made in January but the trip can be anytime as in trip does not need to be completed in January.

For people who are not aware, Turo is a car sharing platform.

Hope I've created this listing right.

  • Can I use turo for trip to airport?

    • Yes from my understanding.

      • lets say I drive the car to airport, but then how do I return the car?

        • I think you have to return the car back to where you picked it from or you can always arrange for the host to pick it up from you for a fee at the airport.
          Haven't tried this yet though.

  • Had the worst experiences with Turo in the US. Insurance and issues are a major concern and not covered. Its 20-50% of rental costs to add (no cover at all).

I just compared this to two dates and a used car rental. Adding in like-for-like insurance car rental was a lot cheaper AFTER this coupon.

Also for those thining of being a seller, read up on them. Terrible support, most insurance companies won't cover you and overall, terrible business model.

    • Was useful to me and way cheaper than renting from a mainstream rental company.

With or without insurance? KM? Etc.

I've used Turo a heap. After a number of issues, but then a total cluster of an issue. Car returned perfect. I took videos and photos pre and post-rental. The seller lied saying it was damaged and Turo deducted $8k from the credit card without consultation. I issued a chargeback, they lost, then took another $2.5k

Despite photo and video evidence. Later apologised and post chargeback refunded it, saying their automated systems do it to protect themselves for damage.

Had another seller claim existing damage (dent) recorded on video on pickup, $1200 deducted. Again, fight, chargeback and ongoing arguments.

Both took 6+ months. So, good luck. I assure you, like for like, it isn't cheaper. Acceptable risk cheaper, possibly. But trying a rental in Sydney, Melbourne and Cairns, I'm finding rentalcars.com cheaper in all three before the discount. Mel & Syd are cheaper slightly (without insurance) with the discount.

The discount is great, hence would never neg, its a great offer you've shared. I'm just coming from first-hand use in the US (where they started) last year and they're a shocking company I'd never trust, discount or not. The main concern is zero insurance in Australia according to their website, so renters are liable for both first party and thuird party in its entirety. Good luck with that.

The one time I tried to use it in the US was like 6 years ago. Turned up at this house after a $50 Uber ride there and nobody was home. House was dead quiet. Called Turo, they couldn’t get onto the owner. Guy just totally went MIA.
My mate was messaging him and he finally responded a day later with some shit about how he was an ex-Marine and gonna come bash us. Turo refunded but it was a (profanity) hassle and (profanity) our planned road trip. Never again.

          • @ntwigz: Wow. The initial part of the story (till he calls back and says he is ex marine) looks like a perfect script for get out part 2. =D

Block-quote according to their website, so renters are liable for both first party and thuird party in its entirety. Good luck with that.

In Australia any registered car has compulsory third party insurance so the renter can not be liable for it.

          • @BargainBadger: Turo requires you inform your CTP insurer that you are renting your car which may increase your premiums:

            • @BargainBadger: "Require you…." Yet, do not ask for proof and do not require it when signing up = "We're covering ourselves legally so you can't sue us for not informing you". They just want to inform you and not be responsible.

I believe in a free market, and love marketplaces that work. AirBnB has protections in place for renters and landlords. Turo cuts corners to try to compete. Uber covers passengers and requires proof for drivers.

Also, CTP doesn't cover the renter if it's rented. That's been fought and lost for rideshare in Australia. Meaning CTP is won't cover you (without actually advising them) and Turos signup process does not ensure it (unlike other Rideshares).

All in all, free market, free world. Personally would rather Uber locally or rent properly as covered. Turo would be great if they weren't bleeding money and actually covered the basics for both sides to make it safe to use.
