[QLD] Haier 498L Bottom Mount Fridge - $899 + Delivery ($0 BNE C&C) @ Save On Appliances

110

Haier HRF520BS Satina 498-litre Bottom Mount Refrigerator Featuring 4 Star Energy, Reversible door, Recessed handle design, Super Freezing and External temperature control with LED display.

Went looking for a replacement fridge after our 20yo Hoover fridge sprung a leak, and settled on this model. Best price I could find from the 'majors' was $1195! Ended up doing a price-match on this one with JB Hifi.

Have had the Haier for a few days now. Very impressed with the attention to detail with the packing (foam and tape everywhere!!), and it's working fantastically well. Comes with a 2 year warranty on the whole unit, and additional 10 years on top of that for the compressor, so hopefully that shows some confidence b the manufacturer.

Did you read the reviews for the model? Seems to have a fail rate of 50% within the first year.

      • Comes with 2 year warranty and 10yr on compressor. Anyway it’s my spare fridge. Let’s see

  • How's the reliability and build quality of Haier?

I'm sure you will notice a reduction on your electricity bill compared with a 20 year old fridge.

    • Had it for 4 years. Needed to shuffle a few cables after moving house twice to stop resonance on the metal cover of the compressor but was a trivial job.
Otherwise rock solid, quiet and I love the custom Zone feature. My meat has never gone bad whrn the Zone is set to 0°C

That's funny, as you may not. The newer environmental refrigerant gases aren't as efficient/effective so they tend to use more power. But the seals will be fresher, which might make a decent difference.

It depends more on the defrost cycle of the fridges rather anything else. A lot of fridges during the 90’s were incredibly inefficient with defrosting. And the heating cycle would run whether needed or not.

Beware. I have this fridge, has been replaced 2 times already.

1st - Internal wiring burnt after a few months, dead fridge, so much wasted food
2nd - Electrics were faulty, kept randomly turning off
3rd - Fridge is stuck at -3 degrees, the controls do nothing

Due to the long turn around to get the fridge replaced (about 2-3 months/fridge for assessment and replacement) the Mrs got frustrated and decided to keep the -3 degree fridge. All our drinks and veggies freeze, but on the plus side we've have not had a single item of food go off since it was turned on.

Haier fridges are complete rubbish but I can't complain about Fisher&Paykel's warranty (you deal with F&P Australia). They've agreed to replace the fridge each time but we couldn't bear repeating the process every few months. It was so tiring.

      • thanks for sharing,
        nearly pulled the trigger

      • This is kind of the similar reviews I was reading online. Made me think it was quite dodgy.

Compared to say the LG 420L GW455 model https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/lg-420l-bottom-mount-refriger…

It gets choice recommended and very high reviews. I'd say it's worth paying the bit extra for that. Even when these come on sale, they can get down to the mid $900s.

Yes, that's smart. Just pay a bit more for a better fridge to save $ later.

Combining the $$$ of food wasted, time wasted, time off work, headache, hassle, accidental door damage from the delivery guy, and now having to deal with frozen food all the time, it was so not worth going with haier. I would have gladly gone with LG had I known the potential of problems.

You might be lucky and won't run into problems, but the odds are already stacked against you when you purchase it.

          • @xlimit: you forgot -3 degrees increase your electricity bills

      • This exact same issue happened with my Samsung top mount 319 litre. So it looks like quite a few brands could be affected.

  • Last weekend a sales person from The Good Guys said Haier is made by Fisher & Paykel

  • we have had this fridge since about 2017 with no issues. Love the bottom smart compartment at the bottom of the fridge area, it can alternate between a fridge/ freezer.

    Horrible fridge. Replaced twice

  • +2

Have had this fridge 2 years. Broke twice. The first time it took 4 weeks to get fixed. The next time was just under 2 weeks. The repair guy didn't hold back on his criticism of the design. He said it was particularly prone to failing in humid environments (ie where most Australians live).

It's very cheap for the size and features but I would only recommend it as a second fridge and even then, only if you have no decent alternatives available to you.

The hassle and drama of being without a fridge is too much for most people's circumstances to warrant owning this even if it was free.
