Warranty tied to car?

Looking at buying a used 'new' car to avoid waiting, are the manufacturer warranties tied to the car, or are they tied to something else, like a physical piece of paper? So if I check the logbook, see it's had the services required by the warranty at a dealership on time, that is the warranty, there's not some other thing that actually holds the warranty?

    What like a demo model?

    • Sure, used or demo. Same situation?

      • Not in my recent experience. Warranty started from when a demo was registered to me.

Generally factory new car warranty is transferable, any extended warranty (which generally aren't worth the paper they're printed on anyway) aren't. The manufacturer may specifically exclude warranty transfer or have a time/km limit though so you really need to check on a case by case basis.

Factory warranty is tied to the vehicle.

After warranty/goodwill repairs are tied to owners and servicing.

Australian Consumer Law overrides these in only some cases.

are the manufacturer warranties tied to the car

Yes. It starts on the date of first registration and usually is transferable with the car for most car/manufacturers(Not sure of Tesla etc.).

  • You should also ask what the value of a warranty is after 5-7 years when the original factory warranty runs out. Extended warranties often encourage fixing symptoms of a problem, rather than the actual cause of the problem. So long term it can be more efficient to just pay a mechanic to find and fix the actual issues.

  • Are you talking buying from Dealership, or private?

Dealership should be able to let you know how it works with their brand
