  • You had me at Ardbeg

  • Boozebud or Secret-bottle?

    • Secret bottle, OP initially changed it to BoozeBud.
Think there's a character limit too

Both solid whiskies, I have issues with LVMH and Billl Lumsden but don't believe they'll mess around too much with their core range.

      TIL LVMH owns whiskey brands

Hard to avoid the big conglomerates now. Diageo also snapping up several Aussie brands.

Yep Starwars (that's what my friends and I call Starward) was the first to succumb to the Diageo $$$.

        • Mr. Black is theirs now too.

At least it wasn't a buy out. Hopefully $ injection to put forward AU brown spirit into the world more

          • @kickling: Yes, I remember reading the press release saying that it'd be a "partnership" or something along those lines. Diageo has made Starward available in NZ and the UK, but this was a while ago. I stopped checking foreign sites like I used to so I don;t know the progress of the expansion.

However, they have pretty much axed New World Projects, yes I know abiut the Small Batch line but that is 500ml vs the 700ml NWPs. The "Solera" is the same as the OG Starward, and has gone from $80 to $125. The Nova used to be called something like "Starward Wine Cask" and has remained under $100, Two Fold is even cheaper with the wheat grain (basicaly vodka in a barrel for 2 years). I'm not 100% sure of the timing, but I'm quite sure the wine cask was already available before the Diageo "partnership".

So, after selling out to Diageo, they've axed possibly the most interesting and experimental line of Australian spirits (Heartwood is great, but is an indepedant bottler), and added a malt+wheat to thieir core range. I don't know where else they have expanded but the partnership hasn't done much.

Australian whisky is already well known due to Patrick Maguire and Sullivans Cove, not David Vitale and Starward. Starward Solera is not a whisky I want repping my country anyway.

            • @rosebank: Yeah that's true. I stopped getting Starward after I tried their unexpeated. Their ginger beer casks were poor too. I did grab their birthday one recently though. I also have an SMWS bottling. But yes, nothing interesting really anymore. And their price jumps are in line with Diageo hikes in terms of timing and amount.

Interestingly though I have had the NWP Wine cask recently, and compared to the Nova the Nova is more refined in my opinion. So maybe they have improved.

I also wouldn't choose Starward as poster boy, but it still would be a good contributor in its own right. It is in a different category to Sullies, so it has its place.
