Can Laptops with iGPU's Play Minecraft, Roblox and Other Similar Games OK

Looking to buy my son a better laptop than his current one which gets rather framey in Minecraft in complicated maps. He hasnt complained yet but it makes me sad.

Current laptop is a second hand Dell gaming laptop, but I was lazy when purchasing and didn't research properly and it came with the worlds most underpowered AMD CPU and okish GPU ( AMD FX 9830P Quad-Core Processor and AMD Radeon(TM) RX460 with 4GB GDDR5) and I think the frame rate struggles are the CPU and really old gfx drivers from Dell that can not be upgraded

It is a hot noisy slow beast and was thinking are some of the iGPUs in the later AMD chips in laptops good enough now for Minecraft etc. No AAA games.

Appreciate any thoughts or experience

Play with a lower screen resolution to increase frame rates?

Yes, Ryzen G chips with Vega graphics should be more than enough for Minecraft and similar games.

Question, OP, is your son playing the Java edition or Microsoft's Bedrock Edition? The latter runs tons better than Java

    • Yeah Bedrock.

  • I took my Lenovo IdeaPad Pro 5 14" (Ryzen 7 5800U/16gb, no graphics card) overseas recently, and installed Minecraft and Roblox on it so my son could play occasionally on rest days, etc. No complaints from him. I didn't exactly watch him play much, but didn't notice any issues.

  • Check this website: https://www.logicalincrements.com/games/minecraft

Compare any potential laptops specs against comparable desktop parts and then you should hopefully get something you're happy with what you get.

Based on five years of use, this will play Minecraft and Roblox.

Minecraft has 2 editions, Java (the original which tends to function a bit more reliably for advanced technical features) and Bedrock (Microsoft's new version which works on everything from phones to PCs and has crossplay, and which aims to keep parity with the Java edition on each update but which still has some differences). Bedrock tends to run much better for underlying technical reasons. If there's any intention to play with others, it's important to know which version they're on.

It's also the kind of game where you can keep pushing graphics settings higher and bring even a high end PC to its knees. My RTX 3060 12gb and i5 12400 can struggle to maintain a consistent 60fps with a view distance of 21 blocks and a complex map situation, with all graphics on high. That being said I previously played it on a GTX 1060 3gb and i5 4690 and just had the settings somewhat lower for a similar experience. You can generally bring the settings down to make it work better on lower power tech however.
