Bar None Shampoo/Conditioner Bar $5, Shampoo/Conditioner Concentrate $4.80 @ Woolworths

70

Walked into Woolies Town Hall expecting to do some window shopping, only to find this absolute bargain. It looks like the NZ hair care brand Bar None is on clearance from Woolies.

NOTE the Hydrating Conditioner Concentrate is not heavily discounted as the others. $9.40, save $6.40

Some extra info:

  • Shampoo/conditioner bars are quoted to be equivalent of one 400ml bottle
  • Shampoo/conditioner concentrates are quoted to be equivalent to 30+ washes (uses a chickpeas size amount)
  • Liquid shampoo lasted me roughly 2-3 months, I wash every second day and have very long, thick hair.

Why do I like Bar None? IMO it's likely the most sustainable/eco-friendly hair care brand offered in the big supermarkets - I've really looked around. It uses ONLY aluminium or paper packaging, all of which is completely recyclable (YES, even the black cap on the concentrate is aluminium). It's vegan and cruelty free and the product is of excellent quality. The liquid shampoo in the pink bottle (for dry hair) is the best I've ever used, despite its claims, it cleaned my oily hair very well and is hydrating enough that I don't have to condition later. At RRP, the brand is quite expensive, but at this price, it may be worth a try.

The aluminium bottle cap is a hassle, so eventually I decanted it into a empty body wash pump bottle. IMO the aluminium bottle is a more sustainable option than the shampoo refill pouches, especially with the collapse of the recycled soft plastics scheme in Australia.

Wonder if Woolies will keep the brand, but, I'll take the bargain.

Plenty of stock left in Woolworths Town Hall

It's epic because……. It's good for the "planet"

Correct that Aluminum is recyclable but no longer meaningful in Australia, since the only plant closed a few years ago. Sydney suburbs.
95% of Aluminium scrap in Australia is exported.

    • Looking at a couple of articles, looks like that number is closer to 44% - 66% (or lower) for aluminium packaging recycled in Australia. Link to one

Collected but not processed any more in Australia.
Source: I used to work in the industry at the recycling plant.

        • This article also states more than 95% is exported. Thanks for the info, I have learned something today.

As sad as the recycling industry is in Australia, I still think aluminium is the lesser of two evils (i.e plastic)

@dengziyi: Yes it's sad that the state of recycling in Australia is so poor. The UNSW article linked could have been written better.
The Al recycling plant closing was due to a number of political as well as the usual economic factors.

I'm not sure about this because it's made in China. I've been watching the prices on this brand for a few weeks now and it is the cheapest I've seen it.

    • I understand the made in China aspect. However, I suspect it's because they have access to better resources/process. If you're looking at the cruelty free angle though, they don't sell in China!

  • Beauty and the Bees is the shampoo I use
