(Android) How Do I Hands-Free Shazam a Song on The Radio?

Howdy

Say I'm driving with Waze/Google maps and a song comes on the radio, how do I (hands-free) Shazam it and then switch back to map once done by voice all without touching my phone?

Android 12, unrooted.

Can’t you just say “hey google Shazam this song”?

    • Unless I'm missing something blatantly obvious, that just does a google search for "song" and "Shazam" 😐

I also don't know how to switch back to my navigation app afterwards.

How about 'Hey Google, open Shazam'?

If it doesn't automatically start Shazamming, there's an option in settings I think for that.

If Shazam doesn't automatically close, then 'Hey Google, open Waze/Google Maps'?

Or alternatively give CodeXD's method a go

        • I've tried the open Shazam one before, it just opens and bring to focus the app, and you need to tap the button to get it to start.

@[Deactivated]: There's an option in the app settings called 'Shazam on startup'

@CrispyChrispy: Oh holy shit, with both of your suggestions this solves my problem. Thank you soooo much 😊

@CrispyChrispy: Actually, spoke too soon… Once Shazam opens and recognises the song it stays on that page where the song is discovered, which is cool as it'll add to history of recognised songs so I can look at it later.

However on that screen, hey Google is not recognised and no matter how much I try there's no input to switch back to map :-/

Yeah same here, which is weird.

Might have to give CodeXD's method a go, and tell Google to maybe take a screenshot of the floating window if that works. A bit more finnicky though

                • @CrispyChrispy: Urgh, I tried that, do you know how to get it to save screenshot without prompt? I tried to screenshot and it stays on that screen where it asks what you wanna do, like share/copy/email etc, I don't know how to get it to just save to gallery. And if I switch back to map at this point the screenshot isn't saved :-/

I'm quite surprised that there isn't an much much much easier way to do this rather common thing hands-free…

@[Deactivated]: Hmmm I just gave this a go and it appeared to work for me?
                - Firstly I made sure "Shazam on startup" was activated (as CrispyChrispy said).
                - I had Google Maps running on my android to navigate somewhere random.
                - I said "Hey Google; Open Shazam. (Shazam proceeded to inform me of the current song that I was listening to).
                - I then said "Hey Google; Open Google Maps". And it went back to my navigation.

    • Apple owns Shazam, so Google may not want functionality built into OK Google.

Hey google "what is this song"

Google will use its own audio search rather than shazam tho.

    • Oh hey that worked! I see google displays the result on a floating window, how would I capture this so I can look it up later, it'll stay in recent apps but if I ask it again on a different song the previous will be overwritten?

Also, how would I switch back to my navigation app?

        Hey Google, open Maps.

I think you can find prior voice search results in the Google app on your phone, but it was not straightforward.

Once you're done just say 'Google open Maps' or something similar and it'll resume navigation.

        "Hey Google, take a screenshot"

        • Yeah was gonna suggest this. I know this command works for Siri.

If you’re with a Pixel, then Google’s Now Playing feature saves all songs identified with time stamps. You can search for the history in settings or set up a widget on your Home Screen. Unsure if this feature is in other brand phones.

When you get home just wait for the song to play again on the radio. Have your cassette ready and press the play and rec buttons at the same time. Remember to press stop at the end of the song.

    • Early high seas action. 90% sure the first song that 10 year old me taped was Another One Bites the Dust on Christmas day. I got my National RX-4945FA and four blank BASF 90 minute tapes from Father Christmas. The tapes are in the shed somewhere and the National is still rocking even though it is sporting some grinding spark marks
      .

  • Also you could upgrade to digital radio, which has the song names come up on the display.

  • OP have you tried soundhound?
