Recommendations for Replacing Motorcycle Tyres in Sydney?

Hoping for some recommendations for places in Sydney to get my motorcycle tyres replaced.

I've never needed to get motorcycle tyres before (only bike I've ever owned) so don't know where to go for a good deal / not to get ripped off.

My current tyres are crappy ones fitted from factory on my 2016 model Yamaha R3, so getting old and worn now.

Someone recommended to me the new Michelin Road 6 or the previous Road 5, but open to suggestions as to be honest I don't really know too much.

  • Depends on what you do with the bike. Just commuting to work and around town, Road 5 or 6 are pretty good. If you like Michelin, also check out their Pilot Street or Pilot Activ.

If you’re commuting with some weekend road warrior twisty riding, maybe look at Pirelli Diablo Rosso III or Rosso IV.

Flat out tarmac tearing boy racer all the time, Pirelli Diablo SuperCorsa.

Also look at Continental tyres. I’ve had some really good runs with their tyres.

If the budget is tighter, maybe look at Bridgestone, Metzeler, Dunlop or Shinko.

It’s easier to help if we know a budget and riding that you will be doing…

    • In terms of budget, I honestly don't know since not sure how much it should cost

In terms of type of riding, definitely the first or second but I'm not a superb rider by any means.

Better to talk to a motorbike mechanic mate.

You haven't listened your location but collideascope in asquith are great, they've done a lot of work on my bike and are really knowledgeable.

Also if you're running on 7 year old tires what else have you not kept on top of? Do you get it serviced? When was the last time you cleaned and lubed the chain?

Motorbikes require maintenance and failure to do so puts your life at risk

    • Sorry, I'm around North West Hills area, but happy to take it around quite a bit like around Sydney West, north around Chatswood etc.

All servicing has been looked after every year per the logbook. But tyres haven't been replaced.

I'm planning on seeing my mechanic and who they recommend, but I'm just wanting to see if there's others who can recommend good places to get tyres. Particularly being an ozbargain forum, somewhere that's good value/cheaper than mainstream stores or maybe where you can get a good deal too.

      • Fair enough. The one I mentioned is probably a bit too far for you then in that case.

Did the mechanic mention anything about the tyres? Any mechanic worth their salt will tell you that 5+ year tyres (especially from factory) should probably be replaced.

Best way to get a discount is to do it at the same time as a bunch of other stuff at the mechanic. I got my tyres changed, major service, installed new lights etc so you save on the labor.

No they didn't! Interesting, I'll bring it up next time I see them.
          Thanks for your help.

  • My stealership told me i needed new rears on the Duke 390. It's less than 2 years old. Has Metzlers.

I guess it'll be through them, or perhaps if I can get a good bargain on a single Metzler rear, would be good if op and I knew which doors to knock on.

All the online stores have deals for cars, none for bikes. Peter Stevens and the like never have sales for tires.

  • Getting some Bridgestone battleaxes on my 250 in Sydney

    • Where from? How do you compare tyre costs/deals? Do they charge extra labour for fitting?

  • +1

    I get prices from https://www.motorcycletyrewarehouse.com.au/

The prices here are much cheaper than what my local tyre shop on the Sunshine Coast (shout out to Overlanders in Cooroy - best and most friendly, helpful guys in the business) charge off the rack but they'll match the price and charge $15 per wheel for fitting. I highly suggest Michelin Road 5/6 or Pirelli Rosso IV. Don't get the Rosso III.

    • Plus $25 shipping to Sydney.
      OP needs local in Sydney.

@supbah did you get an answer yet?

      • Plus $25 shipping

All the local bike shops I've been to will match the sticker price from the online store I linked to without adding the shipping costs.

      • Yeah, after some more googling I found this thread on netrider:
        https://netrider.net.au/threads/where-to-go-for-new-tyres-fi…

Ended up going to Team Moto Blacktown and was fairly happy with both price+ service.

        • Great!

What tyres did you get? ANd how much did they charge you? @supbah

          • @lordra: Ended up going with the Michelin Road 5s
Tyres + right angle valves was 599 installed ride in, ride out

Road 5s are maybe a bit on the expensive side for such a small bike, but they were extremely well recommended to me by someone who's been riding for more than 30 years.
I've already put 200kms on them and they've been fantastic!

            • @supbah: Nice one!
I'm guessing that was $600 for both tyres, plus full take-off, fit new tyres, install them back on the bike, and balancing?

              Was it these guys?

              • +1

@lordra: Yep! Everything you mentioned plus re-tensioning the chain as well as right angle valves which makes it easier filling up the tyres.

And yep those are the guys.

                • @supbah: Thanks mate. Just curious.
What were the tyres sizes and costs?
I'm going to give them a call and see what I get.

                  @supbah

                  • @lordra: So my tyres are fairly small sized compared to commonly used tyres I think: 110/70 front and 140/70 rear, both on 17 inch wheels.

I was only quoted for both tyres, full take off and install (ride in, ride out), but I can't remember the exact quote. Then they quoted 599 if I included the angle valves, which is what I went with since it's a pain to fill them up otherwise. I think the quote without the valves was only 20-30 cheaper but can't remember exactly.

                    • @supbah: Great, thank you.
I'm the same as you, 150/60 R17, so let's see what they can do. I only need the rear.
