Can I Use Citibank Plus Debit Card for General Purchases Overseas?

I understand that the Citibank Plus card is good for withdrawing at ATMs with no foreign exchange conversion fees, but if I go to a store to buy stuff or pay for hotel costs can I just use the same card? (assuming there's sufficient funds in the debit card).

Do I need to select Savings or Credit on the payment machines?

So asides from the convenience of "credit', can I simply use this card for all purchase types while overseas? I'm still waiting for my 28 degrees card to be mailed and don't think I'll get it in time.

Depending on where you are going, you’ll likely just tap the card like here and it’ll automatically go through via credit.

    Always prepare with redundancy!
Ubank debit card worked faster than a local bank in Europe.
    CBA works where others don't.

Thanks - for any future readers, my CBA card didn't initially work overseas as it was a "local" foreign transaction that was not acceptable until I quickly used the app to okay this. It worked instantly after that which I was amazed at.

  • Dont use it to pay for hotels because a lot of hotels will place an additional preauthorisation on the card to cover any extra costs or damages. That will freeze your funds and the authorisation can take days or weeks to drop off.

Agree, having preauthorisation on a debit card can be very tricky.

I use my Citi to pay for hotels, but get them to use a different card if they need one for preauthorisation.

    • Thanks - for any future readers, my Citi card was okay (in a Fiji resort) without pre-authorisation. So lucky on this front.

  • I am about to go down this path as well. Will be in S. Korea and planning to use newly opened Citi Plus debit card.

I seem to remember seeing that Citi Plus uses Mastercard currency rate (and being touted as a good thing - unless my memory fails me), but when I try to google Citibank and exchange rate it uses, I ended up here:
https://www.citibank.com.au/global_docs/pdf/MCG17013_0919.pd… (see section "3.4.4 Foreign exchange transactions, fees and charges")

Which mentions Citi Exchange Rate, and found it here:
    https://www1.citibank.com.au/deposits/convert-currency

Wanted to compare AUD-KRW rates but don't have the debit card yet so not able to login for more currencies (the above page doesn't have KRW, but maybe once I get debit card and I can login, there'll be more currencies?)

Anyone know if Citi Exchange Rate is fair rate (I guess compared to Mastercard rate which I seem to remember is good rate)?
