Note these are basically disposable, as the battery isn't replacable (unless you cut it open).

    • +1

      Yeah!
Chaffingbuttocks is clearly looking for his/her/it's/their X Mrs ha.

      • +4

That obvious? Haha. Find my phone only works if the phone hasn't run out of battery… So 3yrs on a tile is still an improvement

    • +9

Such unrecyclable devices should be illegal

    • +1

These were replaceable until the law changed in 2022 (regarding button cells) so now they only offer Australia the sealed units.

      • +3

Yeah, silly law. They'll ban glass soon because someone cut themselves. Fair enough on toddler toys.

    • +1

most valuable info. i was deciding between this an apple. i guess im going with apple.

    • +1

with the subscription you get free battery replacement.

also subscription via "Turkey" makes it $15ish for the year.

  • +4

    "up to" 3 years usage

also sometimes I wished I had worked in marketing….getting paid to be completely useless at a job, can basically buy 3 singles for the price of the twin pack (assumption bases on loose observations/experiences obviously)

  • this or Airtags?

    • Airtag has future, apple can anytime find a reason to block tile app from their app store

      • +4

Given the history of other tech companies and European legal actions against such anti-competitive practices, that's highly unlikely.

      • +2

Airtags are useless if you don't have an Apple device.

Until such a time as Google releases a product - which it is believed they are. These remain the best option for android users.

        • +1

Samsung tiles are arguably more useful. I'd hazard a guess that there are more people with Samsung phones walking about than those who happen to have the Tile app installed. I've lost mine a couple times and it's always received constant pings.

          • +3

@ngengerous: Completely agree, I had 4x tiles prior to swapping to Samsung SmartTags.

The difference is night and day, the pings from other Samsung devices is near constant.
Would never go back to tile.
            Tile location pings were rare.

Furthermore, I don't know if it's still the case, but you had to pay for a subscription for location pings from other tile users, if I remember correctly? Samsung is free.

          • @ngengerous: I was under the impression that Samsung tags only work with Samsung devices? As I don't own either Apple or Samsung, I am stuck with Tile.

I am yet to actually use the tile network, I just use it to check that my wallet is nearby and I haven't left it behind.

        • +1

But assuming you are in the Apple ecosystem, I would expect the Apple "mesh" to be wider than tile/Samsung.

Lost the cat for a week hence was looking for a way to geotag him (Bluetooth or gps/4g)
Ended up with tractive which requires a sub.

For $20 tempted to try OP or Apple, well worth even if can only expect up to 3y of life.
Note: I'm android but partner is apple - don't hold it against them tho :-)

          • @ShouldIBuyIt: Am considering getting one of those Tractive trackers for our cat eh. I have some questions for ya if ya don’t mind…

Are they good ya reckon? Like would you recommend it?

Is it minimum $8/month the subscription?

Also how much did you pay? (Wouldn’t be an OzBargainer if I didn’t ask! ☺️)

I missed out on a JB HiFi deal recently when they were down to I think $59~$69 (currently $79 - https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/tractive-gps-cat-tracker-… although Amazon AU have them for $69.29 - https://www.amazon.com.au/Tractive-real-time-Unlimited-Monit…

@Lahmy88: Hey @Lahmy88, I haven't started using the device yet as I'm yet to move to a house.
You can't access the app at all if you don't pay the sub. Expect $12-$13 a month if you pay a year upfront. $8 is probably if you pay 5 years upfront.
The charging cable is magnetic but not as strong as apple.
The device is heavy. We've not put it much on the cat yet because we're still in a flat.
No much positive yet, but I'll PM you once we start using it.
I paid $67 on Amazon, but I had $20 discount from OZbargain deals :-)

Edit: I also just bought OP for $10 just to give it a go

              • @ShouldIBuyIt: Accidentally unpublished comment above (any way to undo that?)

Yeh bit worried about being on the hook for even more subscription costs but if it’s genuinely good then not so bad.

Also concerned about the weight/comfort of these types of things on our cat.

Thanks, I’d appreciate that (regarding future personal message with) 👍🏻

Also, what $20 Amazon discount? 🤔

        • Op asked between airtag and tile, so I assumed he is a iphone user. Also I can guarantee that apple as a company will survive longer than tile. So yeah i recommend apple for ios users

          • @hopper: Anyone would recommend airtags for an iOS used - even if the hardware product was poor, as the utility of each product is enhanced by the user base.

But Tiles are still the best choice for a large section of the market.

Eufy have the smart link tags but not available in Aus yet (release tbc unfortunately) but looks like the ideal option for both iPhone and android users.

    • Yeh I think you’ll likely be right - this or another 3rd party brand that is compatible with both ecosystems.

I personally have held off on Apple AirTags because even with the best deals, per unit price of a 4pk is still ~$35ea. Ideally want that closer to $20ea so I’m waiting to see what Eufy and others make that are Apple FindMy-compatible (Apple ecosystem sucker here) and whether they offer all the AirTag features and hopefully are better overall value-wise.

  • Any good for tracking luggage or finding cars in carpark/finding stolen cars?

  • Hide one on your e-pushy

  • Samsung smart tag is much better

    https://youtu.be/9wefUV_bR0Y

    • Cheers was very informative. Best buy only if you've got a Samsung phone - never ever :-P

  • I had a tile (well 4 of them). The battries went flat and they didn't even notify me. They are really bad.

Moved to AirTags and it is like night and day.

  • +1

Surprised they are still in business. Everytime I ever needed to use mine, it disappointed me.

  • Currently samsung and apple tags can't be shared with family? Can these tile once be shared?

  • So it's cheaper to buy 4 individual pack.

  • Got the 2022 version on special under this price, would wait for that again, easily to replace battery, use it a lot without the subscription
