Any Good Ophthalmologists or Eye Clinics to Recommend?

I am looking for one for my little boy but have no prior experiences with it. I asked around and few know any good ophthalmologists. So I seek help from the community. Thanks very much!

Sydney’s a big place. Are you willing to travel?

    • Yes. For the best specialist.

        Perth?

Sounds like it was actually Yes*

          …within a limited area lol

          • @Switchblade88: Just as I thought. Not really willing to travel.

            • @Muzeeb: Guess that puts Darwin out of the equation as well?

Assuming your location is correct, i can recommend Dr Neil Rowe in Carlingford.

You'll need a referral from your GP though.

He's very friendly and helped with my daughters teary eyes, which required surgery in Epping. The clinic is very child friendly

Has your child been recommended an Ophthalmologist review?
Might be a good idea to see your local Optometrist who will be the best person to give you a recommendation and referral based on what needs to be done.

Could also start with a GP … OP didn't mention how old his little boy was, but assuming <5 and can't do a standard eye test, a GP can do much of the same external examination of the eye as an optometrist does.

      • You absolutely could for the sake of a referral. However, as an Optometrist who has been involved with the brief training GPs get with regards to eyes, the knowledge they have in this area is very much limited to a list of Ophthalmologists they cannot differentiate. This is not an inditement of GPs, their workload is just too much for most to know anything more than they need to.

      • An optometrist visit will probably be better to start than the average GP. People think optometrists just do eye tests at Specsavers, but it's a four year degree devoted almost entirely to eyes vs a thin sliver of what a GP needs to know to pass the MBBS. Also, it's gross generalisation that GPs can do all the same exams when the vast majority of clinics have nothing more than a basic handheld ophthalmoscope on site.

Even within paediatrics there can be ones that specialise i.e retinal paediatrics, strabismus paeds and oculoplastic paeds. I can help point you in the right direction. I'm a paediatric orthoptist. I've worked with Neil Rowe mentioned above and he is the nicest most patient doctor ever. If you dm me your concerns about your boy I'll reply.

  • Any Good Ophthalmologists

Just be careful to not accidently see an Ornithologist.

I had a fowl experience with one recently.

    • Did they try to look up your cloaca?

      • No. I winged it…

        • So you were feeling under the feather then?

          • @Muzeeb: Yes, especially when I got the bill.

            • @jv: BTW I saw that video online of you doing the chicken dance.

              It was poultry in motion.

              wipes away tears

  • We've been using Eyecare Kids in Hillsdale and totally recommend them. They are specialising in kids eye health so the overall vibes are bright and fun. Dr SooJin Nam is the main practitioner and is normally fully booked but if she's not available, we've been seeing other doctors and they are also great as well.

A bonus point is that Southpoint Shopping Centre has one of the cheapest farmer's market around Sydney so you can do your groceries there as well :)

  • Looking out for an eye clinic?

    • I see what you did there.
