This is the GOAT of Air Fryers. I bought this to replace a Aldi Special and its night and day difference.

    • -1

No way, Philips is the GOAT.
      This is not even 2000w
Basket form factor seems to maximise airflow too (that’s why they patented the bucket shape)

      • +1

Ah yes, the airflow that doesnt reach the bottom of your food so you need to rotate it halfway through.

      • +2

That's what you think until you try a better Air Fryer. Philips air fryers are overpriced

    • -1

You can't say it's better when you only tested against a cheap air fryer.

      • I owned a cheap one, and I've also used about another 5-6 at airbnbs or friends places.

        • Any decent brand ones in that list

  • Will try. Thx OP

  • Instant Pot Customer Service is rubbish though - took them a month to sort out a warranty claim. Asked for me to submit videos to show that the product is not working, etc. Slow in responding to emails, and poor comms.

    • Agree. I haven't heard back from them for over a month on an issue.

  • Prefer the traditional type for easy washing. Used to own a toaster oven similar to this design and wasn't easy to clean as you could only wipe not wash. But it's got it's use case

    • +1

This is much easier than the traditional Phillips one. I have recently upgraded and you just have to put three small dishes into dishwasher to clean it up.

  • +2

i bought one of these a week or two back, they're a great unit and we really like it… the buttons are a bit shit (capacitive touch and they just don't register all the time) but it's heaps quieter than our old philips one and the trays make it a lot more useable than the basket style we had previously.

the rotating basket in this thing is kinda cool, it works really well making chips too :D

    • Tempted for rotating basket to try roast coffee, currently doing this in small batches manually in a saucepan.

    • @jaybo - are you able to confirm those dimensions? [22.9D x 25W x 20.3H centimetres] Seems way too small for 10L air fryer? (especially compared with my 3.6L Mistral which is way bigger!) TIA

      • +1

yeah those dimensions aren't right, it's more like ~33x33x35 or so

i think somene mentioned in the previous deal that there's a smaller variant of this one which matches those dimensions

        official website looks better actually:
        https://instantpot.com.au/portfolio-item/vortex-plus-10l/#sp…
        33.6L x 33.6W x 36.5H

        • oh so they lied - geez what are they - advertising people or somethin' … !?

  • Seen reviews that these type of Air Fryer's don't do as good a job as the a number of the basket ones. Also they can leave quiet a mess to clean up since there's nothing to catch crumbs.

    • +1

It has a tray in the bottom which catches al your stuff.

      • Ok, here's what I'm going off: https://youtu.be/WwKAjdqCd4Q?t=193

        • Fair enough, all the reviews I saw were pretty positive. Mine is supposed to arrive today from the last deal so i can't comment from 1st hand experience yet. :)

        • @IJustKnowStuff You are 100% correct with this. It depends to some extent what you cook, but the tray air fryers like this are inferior in every way. I had one for a week and returned it. Was utterly useless. Back to basket one now and it's great.

What they don't tell about these tray based ones is they're essentially all built the same way, and the inside of the fryer is made up of different pieces. It's not one continuous piece of metal, so over time you WILL get food trapped inside the joins and it's literally IMPOSSIBLE to clean. On top of that, as that video mentions, the trays don't allow for even cooking as they block heat between them.

Seriously, stay away from these tray based ones. If you use one frequently it'll just end up at the back of the cupboard in a few months, or the rubbish bin. Get a good quality basket one and you'll be sorted. I use mine 3-4 times a week and it's been going strong over a year.

          • +1

@atomicus: I have both basket and the oven type - each has its pros and cons.

If you use the oven to cook/bake, you will find that this is essentially a small oven. Useful for rectangular trays and bigger sized pans that wouldn't really fit the basket type.

Not too sure what you mean by the food getting trapped inside the joints, but as long as you clean regularly, I don't see it as an issue. The basket ones I had (two already), the basket itself is not easy to clean as the grooves on the sides of the basket make it hard (like the Kmart ones), but this depends on the brand because my third basket type is the Gourmia which only has the bottom "crisper tray" (probably similar to the basket type of Instant Pot brand) which looks easier to clean.

            • @TheTaxMan: The bottom of the oven isn't one continuous piece of metal (like an actual oven is). There's a join there, all around the edge. You can't clean that if liquid/fat gets in it. You literally can't access that part of the machine. You can surface clean it, but over time, as you can't get underneath that part, it will get gunked up. There's no avoiding that.

          • +1

@atomicus: Been using a tray one for a year, we love it.
3 trays loaded up works fine, top is crispiest, bottom is juiciest. Chicken goes in top, vegetables on bottom.

    • 'they can leave quiet a mess'

I'd prefer that to a noisy hot mess ;-)

  • I was already on the fence. I guess I learned it takes $10 to push me over the edge.

  • Thanks Op. got one. for some reason the delivery shows as Jan 30 for me.

  • +4

I love the ease of cleaning comparing to the traditional basket model, the front door is also removable making cleaning so easy. Perfect machine for us.

    • the front door is also removable

No way…I've had mine for about a year and had no idea!

    • +1

Only they're not if you get food trapped down the seams inside, because it's not one continuous piece of metal. You can't put the whole machine in the sink, but the baskets you can clean much easier, soak etc. You'll get away with it for certain foods, very dry, crumbs etc. but the moment you get liquid, fat etc. in those cracks, it's game over, not to mention food poisoning territory. I've seen the inside of some of these machines after a few months use, and it's utterly shocking. The basket ones are actually far easier to keep clean. As I say, it does somewhat depend on the food you cook with them - but I don't know many foods that cook 100% dry and produce no liquid during the process. You HAVE to line the bottom with foil carefully to avoid problems in the long run.

    • Did yours require you to hold/press the air fryer itself steady before opening the door? If I try doing it one-handed I pull the whole oven off the counter

Trying to figure out whether I got a lemon or not

  • +1

what about this one - smaller but reviews seem more positive
    https://www.amazon.com.au/Instant-Vortex-Plus-5-7L-Fryer/dp/…

    • That's better and easier to clean. Baskets are more versatile and can cook a lot more with them.

  • I have been considering S&N Steam cleaning one https://www.harrisscarfe.com.au/electrical/kitchen-appliance…

Bought this during Target's sale for $200 - worth it even only for the ability to dishwash all the trays and accessories. Very convenient. If you can bother waiting for delivery then $165 is great.

  • Coupon is gone, $10 off now - brings it to $188.

  • The dehydrater function works a treat for making jerky or vegetable chips for dog treats or humans :)

  • Expired? Showing $188.00 after coupon for me.

  • How does this compare to Kmart 25l one? Is it actually that big of a size difference?
    https://www.kmart.com.au/product/25l-air-fryer-and-oven-silv…

    • -3

      Smaller

  • Are these faster than a traditional oven?

    • -1

      ?????????
You do realize they are just fan forced ovens.

      • no? Are fan forced ovens faster?

        • Every oven heats different, fan forced is generally better imo, these are just small ovens

    • Yes as they use more power and smaller size they can heat and cook faster

      • no they don't use more power - my big oven may be 3-4000W, my tiny KMart Anko 1.5 litre air fryer base label says 900W - they are much smaller so they can heat up quicker

if my big oven is 70 litres with 3500W, that's 50W/litre
if my air fryer is 1.5 litres with 900W, that's 600W/litre

more realistically I've roughly measured the internal volume as 13x14x18cm, say 3.3 litres
        in which case 3.3 litres with 900W, that's 272W/litre

still more than 5x the power to volume

which is why small quantities of food in an air fryer might cook in half the time

last night I quarter/eighth'd a big potato, coated with olive oil, and air fried to golden in 15 minutes (I leave the default 200C)

OTOH another time doing a bag of frozen chips, which weren't ready in 25 mins in an overcrowded air fryer basket, milady spread on a baking tray and grilled to golden in 6 minutes in our big oven (griller top element in same space) so YMMV

actually, the main thing I like with the air fryer is if I stand lamb loin chops on edge on the T-bone or pork belly on an edge, it can crisp nicely all over - whereas on an oven tray the base tends to be wet (unless you raise it on a grill stand)

        • Based on size vs power ratio

  • does anyone knows of an similar priced alternative with stainless trays instead of non stick?

  • 'Product dimensions 22.9D x 25W x 20.3H centimetres'

sounds tiny - that mesh basket inside, presumably rotating, I guess wouldn't hold more than a cup/handful of chips, and certainly not a family-sized chicken - if it can cook a bird rotating bird, that would be excellent but max size is my question

methinks it may suit one person but not a family

  • Saw the review said touch panel sometimes does not respond need to press multiple times. And what makes this cost more than kmart or aldi ones? This one is even smaller.

  • Update: I'm sending mine back. I have to hit the buttons 10-20 times to get them to work and sometimes they don't work at all. Otherwise it looks like a good unit.

Or maybe not. I just discovered if I use y thumbs instead of a finger the buttons are much more responsive.

    • Did yours require you to hold/press the air fryer itself steady before opening the door? If I try doing it one-handed I pull the whole oven off the counter

Trying to figure out whether I got a lemon or not

      • Yeah the door latch is pretty firm, I use two hands.
