Do Ryobi and Bunnings Jack up The Prices?

Do Bunnings/Ryobi jack up prices? or is it it their regular smoothly ripping off price policies?

I came across this pole hedge trimmer kit on Price Hipster.

Ryobi 18V ONE+ 2.0Ah Pole Hedge Trimmer Kit I/N: 0417307
https://www.bunnings.com.au/ryobi-18v-one-2-0ah-pole-hedge-t…

Apparently, its price was jacked up from $249 to $299 today.

Its normal price was $249 yesterday according to Price Hipster.
https://pricehipster.com/?daysSincePriceChange=30&daysSinceP…

The inflation rate is about 7.8%. Accordingly it should not be more than about 20 bucks for this item.

It seems that this no longer is a consumers' and bargainers' forum but Bunnings/Ryobi's shareholders, reselling tradies and rich torry expats, and trolls' forum.

Why do you feel sellers are bound by inflation rates? They can increase prices as much as they like.

    • I think, like Coles and Woolies, they jack up prices and see if people stop buying. If they stop buying, they drop the price to a point where people start buying again. They don't really care if our money buys less food to feed our kids. Their loyalty is to their shareholders.

As Bunning's parent, Wesfarmers say on their website "Wesfarmers' primary objective is to deliver satisfactory returns to shareholders through financial discipline and strong management of a diversified portfolio of businesses."

Being summer, people are seeing their hedges grow and go out and buy an electric hedge trimmer like this one. If Bunnings think/know the hedge trimmer is selling well the price will remain at $299 and Wesfarmers shareholders get a bigger dividend.

“Never cross a river that is on average 4 feet deep”. Hence why averages are pretty useless if you depend on it.

There motto is, bunnings lowest prices are just the beginning, bunnings beat it by 10 percent which mean they need to increase prices based on their competition.

    • Bunnings have little competition.
It would be interesting to know how many hardware stores have closed in the last 30 years.
      Ryobi is an exclusive.
Also, I think this is a new part number as the previous kit was discontinued.

  • What are the prices of other comparable brands?

  • Its normal price was $249

Just remember that Bunnings is the only stockist of Ryobi products.

If you go onto Ryobi’s site you’ll see information about placing orders for Ryobi to collect at Bunnings

The approval of it is here:
    https://www.accc.gov.au/media-release/accc-allows-exclusive-…

    • What the ACCC announcement doesn't say is that Bunnings likely told Ryobi "you either sell through us exclusively or we will not stock your products"

Ryobi has the same exclusive sales arrangement in USA with Walmart

IMO the method of measuring inflation is flawed - 7.8%, ha, stuff has gone up A LOT more than 7.8% in the past year.

  • I think you'll find that the latest rate of inflation recorded in Australia was 7.3% (12 months to November 2022).
But what that has to do with the price of Ryobi tools, I really do not see the connection.

    • Clearly the price should only increase by Australia's inflation rate as Ryobi is obviously an Australian brand, made in Australia from Australian materials. /s

      • It is neither an Australian brand, nor made in Australia and not from Australian materials.

  • I guess you would want the price to reduce when inflation comes down!

  • Good tools but exclusive sales arrangement. TTI is the maker of many brands.
I buy Ozito for home use and my capital outlay is smaller. Comes out of Einhell like Aldi, good value for money/

  • It’s not like anything else hasn’t gone up over the last couple of years inflation is a worldwide problem, airfares, supermarkets petrol etc etc!!
The average Bunnings carries thousands of products, you will get price rises, they are in the job of making money ask the shareholders!!

  • Includes small battery, I paid $219 for the skin only back on Dec 10

  • Well, maybe you've dodged a bullet. That pole hedger is an absolute killer to work with for any length of time if it's like this one. I do a lot of strength and olympic lifting and I struggle to use it horizontally when extended.

The weight is off and it's very top heavy. The strap and handle buttons are also in weird positions, not comfortable at all to use. Regretting buying it.

    • Agree:
I got the extension pole with the chainsaw and lopper attachments. It is unbearable to use for even breif periods. Definitely as you said top heavy and the harness is so badly positioned it's useless.
      Batteries:
My problem is all of my batteries have suddenly stopped working. I don't have the receipt so Bunnings are not going to accept an exchange. As each battery has a date on it when it was made it's still within the 3-year warranty period but they're not going to accept the return. Attempted to reprint the receipts but the manager on the day wasn't very receptive. I'm even more confused now when I bought the batteries.

      • I’ve got the pole hedger and pole saw. Of course when it’s at full extension it’s not going to be easy to use. It’s not too bad when held in close-ish though.

  • If you are happy to pay yesterday's price, you can go instore and tell them there was a website issue etc. Always works for me.

  • I purchased a Ryobi electric lawn mower(36V, biggest push mower they have i believe)last year.$799. It is now $1299! Only comes with one battery mind you,I purchased an extra battery as it gives it more power & better range.Talk about inflation!
