  • Aldi is a few cents cheaper for their own brand. Though I noticed it has a lot more sauce, the sauce is more watery, and has a lot less flavour than Heinz. But Heinz is like $3 a can, if I could afford to spend $3 for a meal then it wouldn't be beans.

    • heinz made their cans smaller a few years ago but have some sizes in packets of 3 …. much cheaper than individual cans …. but never as cheap as other brands ….. what do these la gina beans taste like compared to heinz ?

      • They're not too bad. I got some after getting sticker shock at the main brands and resolved to buy this brand again.

      • I recently got Heinz beans after a while - just to try, as they used to be my go-to years ago. The beans were broken and mushy, looked bad; def not what I remembered.

Might be bad luck, but I won't know for sure as there are lots of cheaper and tasty alternatives, so no point in buying again.

    • Aldi used to have two different grades of baked beans and spag, then they deleted the more expensive (better tasting and texture) ones and the ones (cheap) that they left are not worth buying…the baked beans anyway. Nowhere near as good as the other ones they got rid of, so I stopped buying them. I've tried all sorts of brands since then, but Heinz is still the best for us….some of the other brands are just downright awful….so sickly sweet.

    High in sodium.
Just get 4 bean mix and tomatoes/tin of tomatoes and make own your spicy baked beans (adding other stuff), makes a few serves.

    • +4

The sodium in the brand is actually not too bad at 250mg/100g . If you add salt or stock when making your own beans it might be similar. I don’t disagree that homemade sauce is nicer but pre-made is more convenient and much better health and price wise than other convenience options like take away or instant noodles.

      • Yeah it's not too bad per 100g but most would eat the whole tin. Beans are extrememly healthy ;)

Still cheap / good for what it is. Just saying pretty easy to make something similar in a saucepan if one can be bothered..
good for overripe tomatoes or just a tin of them, add some onion, mustard, chilli flakes/hot sauce, garlic, dab of soy.. whatever else goes.

        • +1

beans are very healthy …. high in fibre so good for gut bacteria …. if people are worried sugar and salt ….. drain away the tomatoe sauce and just eat the beans …..though with heinz the sauce is something they do well flavour wise.

        • Have you just said they are high in sodium when looking at the whole can, but not bad when looking at 100g?

A whole can of these has also more protein than 100g of any other brand.

          • @pizzaguy: Depends what you consider high amount per day I guess. Under 1600mg per day of sodium is considered good.

I was saying I don't know who would only eat 1/4 of the tin.. just have to be aware how much for the whole tin.

    Good for the bunker…

What the heck. “Woolworths Baked Beans In Tomato Sauce 420g“ was 65 cents a month ago but now it’s $1.10.

    • +1

Yeah inflation / price gouging sucks - woolies/coles have increased their basic $2 wraps by 50c. The wholemeal ones actually pretty low in sodium.

    • +7

We need a baked beans price war like they had in the UK. The war culminated in Tesco selling cans of beans for 3 pence each, and then an independent supermarket stole headlines by selling beans for -2 pence each; the owner paid customers 2 pence for each can of beans they took from the store.

  • +2

It's all price gouging…and the pollies allow it to continue so their big business mates continue to have super yachts etc.,

  • +5

    Beans, beans, the musical fruit…

the more you eat the more you toot

      • +8

The more you toot the better you feel

        • +7

So let's have beans with every meal.

    SPC or GTFO

    • +2

nope, tried them, yuck, same as Watties….in fact I think Watties were even worse

      • +4

Different experience, I will only buy Watties baked beans and no other brand.

        • +1

agree, watties is the best. Heinz is a yuckfest!

          • @derdew: Watties for sure. My local Woolies carried Bush's baked beans for a while which I really liked, then they disappeared from the shelves.

      • I’m wondering if you are a New Zealander…
Why: because Watties is a NZ brand and if you’re used to that flavour it may make other brands taste inferior.

Not being rude, just curious, as I’ve always eaten Heinz since being a kid, and I find Watties inferior. And only tried Watties as an Adult.

        • lol, think you replied to the wrong person. I hate Watties BB and definitely an Aussie, which is prob why I don't like Watties taste, as it is way too sweet for me. I grew up on PMU baked beans, but seeing they don't make them anymore(and haven't for a long time), the Heinz is the closest to them, although the old Aldi ones that they deleted (the more premium ones) were pretty good too, so a shame they don't sell them anymore. The cheap ones they kept, the Corale ones, aren't all that flash.

  • I didn't like the tomato spaghetti personally… Small peices of spaghetti unlike the other brands.

    • +2

Spaghetti soaked for months in a can will not be al dente ….some foods don't can well and loose too much texture …..

  • +2

Thanks OP, will pick up a few cans of the beans. I quite like this brand actually. The sauce is rich and not too sweet. Slop it on toast for a quick breaky. Also great to donate to food banks

    • Also great to donate to food banks

This is interesting logic - donate affordable items to food banks, so people struggling with unaffordable products can have it.

Nevertheless, it's always a great idea to donate to food banks.

At least they would be eating something healthier, instead of cheese burgers and crap.
They still find a way to get cigarettes and grog.

        • +1

Gotta love people who happened to get it all straight with their lives commenting on behaviour of people who are mostly disadvantaged for so many reasons.

It's sometimes one of few pleasures (no matter if you consider it pleasure) to drink or smoke.
And they may have lots of time and anxious thoughts to kill.
And most probably they didn't get as lucky as you in their lives, in many aspects.

          • @pizzaguy: Name checks out

Nah not at all mate, the main point is that some people turn that nose up at something that is send me healthy instead of a junk, in the lava homeless in town. Don't really help themselves but always has a cigarette or high.

How's it going in town? We buy pizza for sometimes but quick turns his nose up after the time. Fed pretty well.

I'm sure the elderly appreciate it

          • +1

@pizzaguy: It's good to see there are still people with compassion and understanding for disadvantaged people pizzaguy. We aren't all lost.

  • +1

I just tried these today and they’re pretty good. I’d rate them better than the coles or woolies brand ones

    • +1

Thanks for the review, I haven’t actually tried any myself but plan to grab some next time at Woolies.

  • The spaghetti not very nice..
The Aldi organic baked beans worth the extra for $1 or whatever.
