Whipper Snipper Line Selection

Since buying 36v Ozito battery whipper snipper which takes a very small diameter line, I think the last self loading spool I bought was 1.8mm which is larger than the 1.5mm it came with, I am forever consuming line.

Happy with whipper snipper which was featured on here 18 months ago…a 4 in one unit. This whipper snipper head has only one cutting line…so I am forever bump feeding out more line. I buy replacement line from Bunnings. The last lot was I think Saxon with some sort of wire insert which stopped the line breakage I was experiencing but wears out so fast.

Any recommendations out there of what brand and type that garden warriors have had success with.

Thanks.

NB. Not looking at converting to 2 line cutting head but if there is evidence to suggest this is the way to go will strongly consider. Also not considering going back to petrol and using larger line.

  • Using less line comes down to technique as well as line quality.

  • The best line i've come across to date is the PowerFit 3mm TWIST premium trimmer line (silver/grey in colour). Bought it from Bunnings and has taken me about 2 years to go through 10 meters of the stuff. The yellow and other colour solid line was snapping every 30 secs to a minute and such a pain to use. This twist line is strong as an Ox but hopefully not too thick for your trimmer.

Edit - looks like Powerfit don't supply the 3mm twist line anymore, but you can get it in the smaller diameters which might suit you better. Definitely recommend it.

    • @dominator293 cool…thanks I will check it out.

  • I got the same unit. I'm using a thicker twist line from Aldi, works much better, consumes less. But it's too thick for the bump feed to work, so I have to press the bump feed by hand and pull the line out.

  • I buy the thicker line, but I notice it destroys the spool sometimes for some odd reason (splits in half or a piece cracks off). I have not yet decided if that is normal wear and tear or whether the line is affecting it.

It could also be the spools produced today are not as good quality.

    • @4Eva I put my thicker line from petrol trimmer in the new unit when I first bought it because the supplied line kept breaking. When I spun up whipper snipper the head flew apart and I lost the bump spring. I think it was around 2.8mm thick line which was to stiff for the clips on the spool head. Put old line back on went to bunnings for warranty claim…well they have more money than me.

  • store your line in water.

try using pushbike brake cable… it wont keep breaking… /s

    • @pharkurnell. Mmm I like the way you think. Sometimes I just think inside the box to much.

  • Using heaver line can over load the motor so be careful, same as to long. Make sure it's only the end of the line doing the work

    • @BillS2 agree. Thanks for your input. Heavier line can potentially cause premature wear on the head bearing.

  • "this whipper sniper head has only one cutting line…"
when one of my lines breaks or runs out it feels & sounds different. Would not want that all the time.

Currently using 2.4mm maxpower 338808 twisted line. The notch on the spool required widening to accommodate the twisted line. If it were round, might have gone through without adjustments.

Is a much tougher line. I use it for going through weeds. It bears a higher load than a 2mm line. I previously used the ozito line (rubbish) and powerfit 2mm round (better then ozito). Thought I'd try some heavier line to see if it works better.

I also removed the cover and I agree with a previous commenter. A lot has to do with how you cut. For home users, I guess it's just practice and more practice.

  • Another vote for the max power line. Amazing stuff.
