Bargains for Designer Items Like Bags/Shoes?

Hey Fellow Bargainers,

Wanting to know if designer brands like Gucci, Chanel, LV, Dior etc ever have bargain sales or do they always stay RRP? Particular items I'm interested in are Gucci and Dior bags like this one for example

https://www.gucci.com/au/en_au/pr/women/handbags/crossbody-b…

If not, anyone know what's the most cost-efficient way to get one? 2nd hand? Facebook marketplace?

Thank you.

  • My misso follows a reseller/consignment shopwho authenticates for luxury goods like Chanel - it was recommended by her Taiwan/Chinese friends - but I’ve always been suss on it and just tell her I’d rather buy it brand new from the actual boutique (and imo buying it from the boutique should be a big part of the experience)

    • Interested to know more about this? How much cheaper is it??

    • I once bought something from one of the designer stores mentioned and I thought it would be pop in, pay cash, get out. Boy was I wrong. I had a list full of things to get done in the city, and my entire schedule got completely derailed. Designer store shopping will cost you more than just the price tag, it will also cost you half a day. So worth keeping in mind if you value your time!

      • You mean the sales people will keep you in the store as long as possible and won't let you out????

No, its not like they kidnap you. They bring you fancy water and champagne and stuff. Wrap your sh!t all fancy and take their sweet time doing it presumably to encourage you to buy more. Seriously I've never had a transaction drawn out so long before. Putting that ribbon and bow and layers upon layers of packaging took a good 45 mins I reckon.

Pre-sale they will try and walk you through every alternative item as well, which takes ages, and show you all the new arrivals etc. Its part of the "experience" that you are paying for I guess. Not all that fun for me though…

alot of these authenticators just rely on a a dozen photos sent to them from the store staff or uploaded by you.

then they provide you with a certificate of authenticity, however this certificate doesn't come from the manufacturer or authorised retailer.

some of the counterfeit items these days are so good, even trained people in retail stores may not even be able to tell the difference. however, the price of the really good counterfeit goods, you might as well buy the real thing,

we have a friend in China/shanghai who have contacts to a lot of the factories in Shenzhen that produce the counterfeit items and basically, you can send them a link of your desired item they give you a quote based on quality.

i've seen first hand a genuine chanel hand bag and it's replica side by side and as a designer myself, you couldn;t tell the difference, however the cost of that counterfit item was only about 30% difference in cost to the real one,

i'm wearing a pair of yeezy belugas right now and have been offered good money for them from resale sneaker shops, that i paid only $90 for. They look and feel undistinguishable from the real ones.,

I follow the sneaker rep sub reddits and actually there has been a few times where I would have preferred the rep over the retail sample in a side by side comparison LOL

        • +1

Lol I know what you mean. There’s a number of times reps have been better than factory ones (esp. the Jordan’s that have had big releases)

The most cost-efficient is probably that smash-and-grab which happens reasonably regularly.

      Or wish.com ?

  • There are authorised resellers that will very often have sales. Plus sites like Fashionphile for secondhand.

Mytheresa (EU) - $2000 exc postage (post worldwide) - https://www.mytheresa.com/euro_en/gucci-gg-marmont-mini-cros…

    Alternatively, there's one on Gumtree for $800 - https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/perth/bags/quick-sale-gucci-…

    • How reliable are 2nd hands? Is it easy to get scammed from buying a knock off?

      • +1

you need to know what you looking for, and even that it is hard,

        • So the cheap fakes are indistinguishable from the genuine item?

          • @brendanm: depends how crap the genuine item looks,

    Bargains for Designer Items

An oxymoron if I've ever heard one.

    • Sorry

OzBargain is full of needless consumption products. But when it's luxury, it's an oxymoron?

Question is are items like the bag you linked timeless pieces you'd keep forever, or just the going trend at the time?

If its a bag that you will have for 30 years, it will last for 30 years and has a warranty for 30 years, just buy the thing full price and maybe buy it just before an overseas trip to at least get duty back.

If not, go to Bali and get one.

  • You could buy fakes. Apparently you can't copyright fashion so you can legally buy a clone of a designer handbag or shoe, minus the trademarked logo. Which is probably why these brands make their logo a giant metal clasp on the bags or a pattern on the fabric.

  • That is one tacky looking bag.

  • luxitfwd.com.au has that exact bag that you linked, second hand - https://luxeitfwd.com.au/handbags/gucci-gg-marmont-small-cam…

I've not used the shop so can't comment on their service etc.

  • I like to change my bags around to match with my outfit, so sometimes I can't justify paying full price for something I'm only going to use parts of the year. This bag you're looking at though is a very popular style, I see a lot of them around, along with a similar styled crossbody bag from Saint Laurent too. If it's going to be your full time bag, then why not spend the money and buy brand new, that will save you the hassle and possibility of getting a non-authentic item if you buy second hand.

I haven't bought many designer items lately, but in the past I used to follow HG Bags as she sources popular Valentino shoes, Gucci and LV bags brand new and sell them at good prices. They're based in the US but ships to Australia with reasonable shipping charges.

Not sure if prices are competitive any more, here's the link anyway. https://hgbagsonline.com/.

    • From your experience, do the higher end designer bags go on sale? If so, whens the best time to buy?

I know Coach has a 30% off sale but haven't seen one for the more premium ones like Dior

HGBAGS are doing 20% off, are they brand new??

      • +1

Nah, Gucci, LV, Dior and Chanel will never have sales. Your best bet is to go through resellers like HG Bags, Cosette or Rebonz and see if they have the styles you're after.

Other designer brands like Ferragamo, Tod's, Mulberry, Chloe, etc might have some small sales throughout the year, you can sign up to their newsletters to keep track. David Jones sometimes have good deals, for example, they have some Chloe bags at the moment at extra 20% off.

Oh and yes, HG bags sell items brand new, unless you go specifically to the Pre-owned section.

      • Coach and Dior are on two different levels …

What about Ferragamo, Tod's, Mulberry, Chloe?

@Homr: you need to do more homework,

  • Why would anyone want to give more money to a multinational corporation that is worth hundreds of billions of dollars?

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LVMH

They own dozens of brands in the fashion & alcoholic beverage markets, plus the families involved have financial interests in just about every other industry you can imagine.

You don't need it, see if you can overcome the urge to want it. If you can't, seek out some deceased estates in the wealthy areas of where you live. You might get lucky.

Jesus. You need love. I recommend gifting your wife something from Sephora (or Tiffany if you can afford it) and you'll hopefully get more love and be less judgemental of people.

  • has anyone bought from https://www.openforvintage.com/ before?

    • More like this is your brand you're spamming.

        • I think you are a spammer whose account will soon end up in the penalty box.

And how is what you 'recommended' better than Gucci and Chanel?

            • +1

@beckwithLevis: Sure, whatever you say spammer. If you're not spamming, why did you provide a link to a shitty website that's full of ads? Also, clearly you do care, because here you are responding to me.

OP clearly stated they are after Gucci-type bags. They are totally not going to buy your crappy goods from your website.

Edit: Oh, look at that! You're now in the penalty box, just as I predicted.
