Interstate Purchase from Used Car Dealer

The prices for this particular model are 4-6k cheaper in QLD (im in NSW)

Car im looking at is 2-3 years old, still under warranty.

Anyone know any hidden issues/annoyances?

Seems to be a good option to me?

  1. Used dealer must ensure car is free from encumbrances as per oz law
  2. Manufacturer Warranty is nationally covered.
  3. Blue slip not needed (<5 years old)
  4. Used dealer is experienced with shipping and logistics (de-rego etc)
  5. used dealer has an ABN/entity which has to adhere to law and cannot disappear easy.

So, gonna spend $200 on third party inspection, $500 on shipping? and then applicable transfer and rego fees in NSW which is straight forward.

Anyone know of any hidden issues/risks?

    Manufacturer Warranty is nationally covered.

Only if the previous owner serviced as per the logbbook.

    • It’s covered regardless under state laws!

      • Please explain

        • Under state regs & law,if the vehicle is covered by manufactures warranty, they cannot refuse it.The same as purchasing a demo, it second hand, so remaining mileage/years is transferred.

          • @Hackney: My argument was that if if the previous owner never serviced the vehicle or didn't follow the logbook servicing requirements then the dealership could reject a warranty claim by the OP.

            • @MS Paint: I guess they could, but under state law you are entitled to the warranty on the vehicle.

Warranty doesn't cover flood damage. Car might not have been affected but definitely be wary.

Who are you using for independent inspection? RACQ?

    • ^^ This…
With all the floods around I'd be holding off buying anything used that I didnt personally know the history of… we found a few years back at auctions that still had pebbles etc under the carpet edges.

  • What sort of used car dealer is it? dealership that also sells new cars? little "family owned" one?

If the later be highly sceptical. Very rare someone would trade a 2-3 yo car on a different used car. Probably sourced from an auction cheaply and therein lies the risk.

    What could possibly go wrong?

    Past threads include issues like:
    Dealer sold me a 2017, but it’s a 2016
Car arrived with damage no one will take the blame
Car didn’t have feature xxxx like they told me (or I expected without asking)
It’s plain white but they told me it’s pearl white.

    I’m sure there’s more.

That's what I'm waiting for is the follow up post when it all goes to shit.

  • Honestly would only do it if its original dealer, seen some deals like hyundai iconiq demos for like 45k

I bought one from ACT (I'm in VIC) 18 months ago and it was a very smooth experience. I had one of my friends in ACT to inspect the vehicle visually and do a test ride. He isn't a professional by any means but what gave me the confidence to buy the car was two reasons:
    1) The car was 3.5 years old and was on a novated lease. Usually, in a novated lease, the maintenance of the vehicle is fully taken care and hence there was a reasonable assumption that the seller didn't do any cheap charlie technique for any repairs.
    2) The dealer was a luxury car dealer in ACT (selling Porsche new cars) and felt they won't do any accident cars. Again, a reasonable assumption given their company profile.

The car landed at my home without a scratch and I am certainly pleased with my purchase. The only extra expense for me was a Roadworthy Certificate in VIC which cost me $180 and (luckily, they didn't find any issues that required replacement).

    Good luck with your purchase.

    • i bought my car from WA dealer had it shipped to me in VIC.
because they have a LMCT license they were able to change to rego to my name.
I went to Vicroads without a roadworthy certificate and was able to change to VIC rego under my name..

I also got a $400 WA rego refund lol

not sure if its the same now.. that was in 2016

      • That's nice, lucky you. VIC Roads didn't mention anything about the LMCT license and hence not sure if it's still valid. Nevertheless, a good point to check it out next time :-).

        • all car selling dealers must have a LMCT license lol

did your car come with ACT rego under your name?
