Help Me Find a UPS

Hi all

Need a UPS but unsure of what size to get. Got a dream machine special edition with 2 cameras on POE. Also have my iiNet cable modem.

Unsure of how big to go for a ups and expected back time with a specific size?

TIA!

If you wanted to be optimal, find a power consumption meter, like this one from Jaycar, thus you will be able to the UPS website to calculate how long you wanted the devices to run without any power

  • You need two things for a ups - wattage and time. I would estimate that load as being 200w max, and more like 50-100w.
So the next question is, how long? How long do you need it to run for? Remember that most UPS's aren't about powering devices for an extended period of time, but more about giving you time to shutdown a computer gracefully to prevent data loss. With security systems though, you ideally want it to run all through the blackout

    • Prob a few hours max??

Then you are looking at the bigger ones. The cheap $100 ones will only power it for maybe an hour max

You might even have to go UPS + external battery, as you need longer runtime not high capacity. So something like the APC Back-UPS PRO ($700) + external battery pack ($400) would cover you for at least 8 hours I would imagine. If money was no object thats what I would grab

But if you know someone who is handy with electronics, they could probably rig something up for a lot less. Just need a standard UPS ($100), a small car battery ($100) and some fans for extra cooling.

        • Amazing. Thanks!!

  • Any brand recommendations?

  • APC is the most popular and well known brand. With UPS you get what you pay for..
