Asus DSL-AC68R Died, Suggestions on Temp Modem/Router for FTTB

Got home from holidays to find my Asus DSL-AC68R shows as an "unidentified network" I can no longer access, nor will it hard reset correctly…. worst timing.

Unsure if I can get warranty as the units a few years old so I figured I'd run down to my Office Works at Tarren Point NSW and grab a TP-Link VR2100v which is on sale for $180 - want a half decent router incase I can't get warranty.

Have FTTB at my units, tried FB buy & sell for cheap unit with no luck, don't want to spend more than 200, hoping for other perspectives as being without games and home internet has left my family frazzled, a condition they've been passing onto me.

if you have small toddlers, a unit without external antennas is essential

    • I have the router on a shelf near the roof left over from those days but the youngest is now 5.

Used Telstra Smart Modem Gen2 (DJA0231, the Technicolor one) can be had on eBay for like $30 and has a SIM card slot. Not the greatest unit but works as intended, has firmware hacks to add features/remove bloat and is cheap until you get a better unit.

If you don't mind two devices, i'd consider running a dedicated router with a modem in bridge mode.

    • Telstra modem router with best possible modem
    • Buy a dedicated router. I'd suggest Asus.

Initially, run just the Telstra modem. When you get the dedicated router, run it with the Telstra device in bridge mode.
