DEVELOPER BLOG: Why we're giving our game away for free.

2023 marks my 40th year in the games business, making games pretty much continuously since 1983. Yes, I’m old. To mark this auspicious occasion, I’m hanging up my debugger and retiring from game dev (yeah, right). Obviously I’m still gonna mess around with the odd prototype here and there (told you so), but I don’t think I have another full project in me. My last published game, Immortal Darkness: Curse of The Pale King, was the best, most satisfying project I ever got to work on in my long career. Given the resources I had at the time, it’s as close to the game I always wanted to make, as I could get. Because I’m retiring, I also retired the game from Steam, and now I’m giving it away for free so more people can play it (link below). Think of it as a Holiday gift. I’m proud of the game and I reckon it’s a good project to end on.

Launch Trailer video & Game Description

Immortal Darkness: Curse of the Pale King is a dark fantasy dungeon crawler, with challenging real-time tactical combat, a wide variety of spells, and a dark and brooding dungeon full of lethal enemies, sadistic traps, and mind-bending puzzles. You are Shade, an ancient and legendary vampire hunter, who has been bitten, and now struggles against the vampiric curse. You must fight your way through a twisted labyrinth of horror and death to finally face the Pale King, lord of all Vampires, before succumbing to the vampiric curse yourself.

Enter a world on the brink of utter destruction, where nearly all life has been destroyed by a spreading plague of vampirism. As Shade, an ancient and legendary vampire hunter, who has been bitten and even now struggles to resist the curse of vampirism, you must enter a dungeon of death and madness, to face the Pale King, Lord of all vampires. As you make your way through this dungeon of horrors you must balance your need to drink blood to survive against your internal struggle against the evil that is consuming you.

But I want it on Steam

Add the game to your Steam launcher. I do that for my Amazon and GOG games. I launch them on my TV in Big Picture mode.

        Fancy… o.0

I've transitioned to console gaming. I don't game with a keyboard and mouse anymore, so I figured I'd just put my PC next to my TV. Works fine. I have Steam launch at startup and straight into Big Picture mode. I still need a wireless keyboard and mouse for small things like going through dialog boxes. But other than that, I can more or less play everything I want on a controller.

can you do the same with Epic games?

        • yes you just direct it to the .exe of the non-steam game.

        • It works with everything, as long as it's installed to your hard drive already, I just add everything because Steam makes it easy to see at a glance (and search through).

      • That doesn't actually add it to your Steam account as an owned game tied to the account. But then again you can't buy this game on Steam any more.

That is correct. Steam will just be the launcher. It's more of a convenience thing.

Does this log the hours player and any achievements?

    • I wonder why he couldn't make it free on steam?

It's a guess, but possibly it's that Steam might expect the publisher (if they set a publisher and not just published under their name. In this case they did setup a company to publish it) to remain legally valid while a game's provided on Steam, whether the game was paid or freed. If the guy was retiring he wouldn't want to be forking out money every few years to renew a company registration he no longer needs.

Sounds and looks like a great hack n slash crawler. I'll be more excited if I get it to run on Ubuntu through wine.

  • Any idea what the differences are between the main download link and the one posted on the http://immortaldarkness.com/trouble.php page? They both say V1.0.0.121822f (same filename) but each gives me a different checksum. The one on the trouble page is slightly smaller than the main Dropbox one.
