NordVPN Messing with Total Amount to Fake Discount

Was looking to get a new VPN after my 1 year NordVPN plan expired. Tried a few like Express and such but did not have a good experience. Nord worked pretty well so far. So finally got an offer from Nord to get a 2 year plan at $2.88 a month or 65% off. Not bad for that cost per month pretty useful.

Before I made the payment came to OzB to check for sweeter deals and found the coupon code mmanuts which gives 2 years + 4 months free or 72% off. When I applied the coupon my total per month remained the same and I was so confused! The per month cost should be lower with 72% off compared to 65% off but it wasnt!

Took screenshots of with and without coupon and found that Nord is basically just messing with the total amount they show to give the illusion of a bigger discount. I know this isnt a internet revelation, I know most people at least on OzB are aware of such practices but I thought I will mention it here anyway!

I've found VPN providers to be extremely dodgy with the marketing of their "offers" too - for example, their offer countdown timer is fake and either always starts at 9 hours 39 minutes or resets every day. This makes people think the promo is about to end when it isn't, pressuring them into a purchase

    • FOMO used at full extent. Now even the Battle Pass systems adopt this method. Just make it a difficult grind and at least some people will pay for the convenience of finishing Battle Pass without the grind.

That's one of the reasons why I like Mullvad. It may be relatively expensive, but at least they're transparent about it. The exploitative pricing practices of the likes of Nord doesn't do a lot to engender trust…

  • Better than 1 for $2 vs 2 for $5 and you go 🤬

At least in your case, one is to sign up for 24 months and one is for 28 months, both same monthly rate until the third year renewal

    • Yeah at least in my case the per month cost was same in both cases.

Or do the right thing and just make a new account every 2 years using one of the regular 95%+ cashback deals and get 2 years account for only a few bucks.

    • Agree with this - 72% off is paying too much given the frequency of 90 - 97% off 'deals'.

This IS the right answer but you know what I rather not risk the cashback tracking and wait an eternity for cashback confirmation. That wait kind of kills me.
