Hi All,

Just came back from Tesla in Chadstone. The Model Y has a $3000+. price drop. Just started today at lunch time.
Went for a test driver and when I came back, the sales guy said he just received an email confirming a price drop on the Model Y.
Being a true OZBARGAIN guy, I bought one. Took all of 5 mins to order. 2 - 4 month deliver time.
If anyone thinking of getting one, now is a good time before they have massive back orders I guess.

Wait till you have to replace the 20" tyres.

  • +1

Know a few people with them, none of them drive all that much. Still a way to drop before i'll contemplate but hey at least the market and competition is finally..slowly… heating up.

  • Hold cash for now, funds are pumping money into US federal Repo loans at record levels says it all.

    • Can you be more elaborate there? What benefit in holding cash now? Will prices come down further? Deflation? Stock crash incoming? Stronger AUD?

  • +1

I don't see EV adoption becoming dominant at this price point in Australia. Maybe next decade, you can still get hybrids way cheaper and not to mention lithium prices are still sky high. Need the price to fall to $35-40k for mass uptake.

  • Pics or it didnt happen

  • This wont be good for the used tesla market.
    It is already saturated

    • +2

Depends which side of the market you're on?

      • +1

True. But I guess a rapidly depreciating car wont be great for the buyer either

        • +1

Normally I say not every buyer cares about resale value if they run it to the ground anyway. But being an ev and uncertainty of battery health, I think it is something people would be more careful of.

    • Most sellers seem to be still asking for prices far in excess of the above price. Someone tell them it isnt 2021 anymore…

  • +1

400+ comments in 2 hours, wow!

  • +3

    https://www.tomsguide.com/opinion/ive-driven-more-than-1000-…

I wouldn't buy one either, EVs need another half a decade to be refined and for the infrastructure to catch up here in Australia

    • +3

I agree. Can already see those very early adopters who enjoyed exclusive use of public superchargers sitting in lines waiting for a very long "refuel". We will get there but a ways off.

      • +2

I fear the day when +80% of the cars on the roads are EVs, imagine the chaos and demand for electricity then.

        • We're screwed.

    • +6

Not really no. Most people exclusively recharge at home and don’t even use public charging stations. The cars themselves are certainly more “refined” than any gas guzzler.

Time to part ways with some misinformed opinions. These aren’t golf carts.

      • The queues at fast chargers nationwide say otherwise. Agree 95% of charging will be at home for 95% of people but that 5% could be pretty painful..

        • +1

Queues? you mean during peak holiday season?

      • over minimalistic dash and crappy sound proofing is misinformed? other similarly priced EVs provide a better experience than a base Tesla. I'll let the early adopters iron out all the issues first thank you :) for now I'll stick with my refined Audi diesel suv that does over 900km per tank. But if I was to get an EV today, I'd seriously look at Volvo or Hyundai instead, and salary package it through work for even more savings due to recent EV legalisation changes.

  • +3

    Just bought one.

  • +3

Model Y. It’s literally in the name, Y the **** would you buy one?

  • +1

People have lost the plot if they think this is a bargain. How is this better than a rav 4 or an X-Trail? Can nearly buy 2 cars for that money for what is a basic car.

    • +1

But you save money! Think of all the money savings with a $70k car! You can’t possibly buy a cheaper car and spend that saving on fuel, oh no no! /s

      • Don't forget build quality of Tesla vs Toyota

        • +1

Same/same. I/Wife own 2021 versions of both RAV4 and Model 3. No noticeable difference in material and build quality. Both great cars that serve different purposes in our household.

          • @Dogsrule: The company infamous for poor workmanship and quality is same/same as a company famous for the exact opposite?

You must either have an incredible Tesla or a god awful Toyota

I did hear the Chinese ones are better and I've never seen one of those up close, so perhaps it's not as big of a gap as it used to be. You can still spot the panel gaps across the block though haha

    • +3

Larger than a RAV4. And you’re not at the whim of the oil industry. Whether or not it works out financially will depend on your circumstances. If you can recharge at home from solar panels, it’s most certainly going to be cheaper quite quickly.

      • When you say quite quickly you mean…very slowly. The payoff will take years

    • +2

      There’s a 3 year waiting list for a rav4 :|

  • +1

    These cars are rubbish quality

  • Is this the MAGA hat on wheels discount that was recently created by Elon coming out of his RWNJ and conspiracy theorist closet?

  • I was looking yesterday. NT is the only state not offering the waiver of stamp duty or no free registration. No deal

  • I love OPs optimism… 2-4 months delivery? Haha 😂

    • +2

Mine arrived within 3 months of order.

  • +4

See so many around now, they just give taxi vibes to me.

  • +3

thanks, op, grabbed 3, one for my French chef, one for my butler and one for my Tibetan mastiff, he likes cars

  • +2

How much for a Model 3 base model?
    Has that been discounted too?

  • +2

why did you change the price from $70,700?

    • Elon must have tweeted a poll :)

  • +1

Waiting for CashRewards or ShopBack cashback :-)

    • I'll be really annoyed if they start offering cashback now.

  • It’s funny reading all these comments about Tesla cars… the selling point of Tesla is not the automotive engineering but the software data driven engineering and driving experience. Not other car company can’t compete, they are just not setup like that.

    • How is the driving experience better/different from EVs by other manufacturers? Honestly the only advantage that I see is their charging network. That’s a biggie if you need to charge a lot while underway. Not so much if you’re only charging at home.

    • What about if you don't want a manufacturer that can't obsolete your car when they feel like it?

    • Oh? I think people are realizing that they're just a bad car company at end of day, and the tech is nothing special. See this article for example:

      https://www.economist.com/business/2023/01/04/investors-conc…

    • There is also Rivian

    • I don’t think they are great cars, but CEO of GM recently admitted they have revolutionised QA in the car industry, they features is probably 2-3 years ahead of anyone else, their safety standard was the highest tested of any car.

For someone like myself who uses a car as a tool as opposed to passion it’s got pretty much everything I need, now at a slightly lower price.

Wouldn’t mind a Rivian, they are much more pricier?

      • Well the Rivian R2S (SUV) which is expected to be the global selling Rivian product (a la MY) is set to have a 40-60k USD price upon launch - which will be a direct competitor to the MY (which should have reduced in price by the time the Rivian launches). Unfortunately, as the R2 platform doesn't launch till 2026, we are not expected to get them in Oz for at least 3-4 years :(

  • Can anyone tell me the running costs of a Tesla over 5 years ? What is the yearly servicing costs etc ?

    • +3

There is no servicing cost. Running cost depends on how you charge.

    • +3

      Generally $0
The only thing you're required to do is change air filters (which you can do easily yourself) and possibly get the tyres rotated every 10K
      https://www.tesla.com/en_au/support/vehicle-maintenance

Tesla recommends you check brake fluids every 2 years, but besides that, there's basically no need to service it every 6 months like ICE cars.

    • +3

their website says zero servicing except for tyre rotation and wiper blades…electric motors only have 20 parts…fossil fuel engines have up to 2,000 parts which tend to break just after their warranties..unless you own a camry

    • +1

Almost nothing, the cabin air filter($26) needs replacing every 2 years. Apart from that tyres, brake fluid when its required.

    • +1

Bottle of Evian water to top up the windscreen washer fluid

  • So these are Made in China & sold in China for 229900 rmb = $49600 aud

Does it cost 15k to ship to Oz?

    Should be cheaper

    https://www.reuters.com/technology/tesla-cuts-prices-model-3…

    • +3

Tesla faces stiff competition in China. BYD and others are eating their lunch there.

      • Shame Byd won't sell direct here. MG are certainly after them though! A few more years…

        • What do you mean? What are all their buildings for if not selling cars?

    • +2

Well don't rule out another round of price cuts if their sales in China doesn't pickup to an acceptable level. They got more room to move so may drop the prices here to build up more of an order bank.

  • +5

stamp duty in WA and VIC are insane

  • Question for Model Y owners: what’s the quality like? Is it as bad as some YouTube videos say? Or do the China-made models OK?

    • +3

      I will take China-made over US-made any time…………unfortunately.

      • And it doesn't mean China-Made Teslas are any good either. It is like Russian roulette some are problems free some aren't. Most of them come with ignoring imperfections, eg. water pump wiring nose, panel misalignment etc.

    • +3

I came from CX5 GT to Model Y RWD.. I'm loving it.. Its little bumpy (got 20" wheels), interior dashboard is plain/dull wooden look with black interior but i've modified to carbon fiber look. Will I buy another Tesla. Yes..

    • +4

my cousin came from an X5 (ridiculous servicing costs), then Forrester (cheaper servicing costs), then to the MY, he drives 23,000 kms per year with 3 kids, charges at home 90% of the time…he hasnt looked back and glad he chose this over the RAV4 hybrid

    • +1

I also came from a 2021 cx5 gt, was a little learning curve without the heads up display, no buttons etc but very happy with the switch.

    • +1

I upgraded from a 2020 Tiguan R-Line, and can say that the build quality is far superior to VW. Its about on par to my previous Audi A3.
It’s a fantastic car and I’ve had zero issues.
Ride quality is also smoother, I’ve got the 20” wheels and I can say without question the ride is better than my old R-Line Tiguan also with 20” that had adaptive chassis control.

  • +7

Still priced for cashed up boomers.

    • +1

      LOL. Ain't that the truth.

      Boomermobile.

  • They might drop it one more time (price that is). They are making a lot more than they can sell at the moment. I suspect maybe another few more kay. So low 70k driveaway.

Good car for an electric. Too bad it is no soul Great for the daily driver who doesn't care about the character of the car.

I'm sure in 5 years time, the BEVs will be much better and will be more exciting.

  • +3

    HODL til $60,000

    • only need to wait 5 months

  • We were just there test driving the Model Y. but we will wait a few more months

    • Did the dealer get another email while you were test driving?

      • Dont forget to use 10minute email

  • OOS missed!!! I snoozed of course I lose.

  • +12

I ordered a model Y in Dec, got a text today regarding the price reduction and the car is now $7,400 cheaper. Happy days.

    It’s a bargain especially now.

Lots of bs on this posting.

When u test drive the car you will want to buy it. The car is fantastic and once you drive you understand how every other car is just old tech. I own expensive new Mercedes, bmw and Volvos’ currently..they’re very good, but the tesla makes them all old school.

  • did the title change it said 71k now its 75k

    Fascist fanboys are gathered.

    • +1

Woke spotted. Anyone who disagrees with me is a fascist, misogynist, hates LGBT etc etc.

      • Lol woke. You're a expert in what field?

        • Deal sucking :)

    • +4

Not really…. There's a reason why people love a certain product and rave about it.

People raved about SSDs coming from HDD.
They raved when touchscreen iPhones came out, as most still had BlackBerry's and Nokias with keypads.

People love Tesla because it's like a computer on wheels. The EV part is just an extra bonus/feature.
Every Tesla has an inbuilt mobile sim, and the cars are constantly updated with new free features.
Compare that to most ICE cars, where the only thing that gets regular updates is the GPS software.

Buying a Tesla is like buying a Samsung vs Chinese brand phone. They keep making it better with updates, whereas most Chinese Android phones have 0 updates.

      Rocket man bad

      • He makes rockets?

Isn't he just some right wing fascist who called an emerald mine a pedo?

        - 90% of online Musk discussion lately

  • -3

No offence but given all the latest information about Tesla and how it's come to light how poorly made their cars are… you'd have to be a fool to buy this.

This is a bad car to buy.

    • -2

      Because you can't afford it.

      • If you do any research at all you'd pick something like the Kia EV6 or Hyundai Ioniq over this for a similar price given their much better build quality and better features. Not to mention you're not associated with Tesla/Elon Musk.

And no - money is not an issue for me because I don't waste it unlike others it seems.

    • -1

Which spectrum of light are you observing?

      • +1

Talk to anyone who works/designs cars and they'll tell you to avoid Tesla like the plague.

Also, have you been living under a rock in regards to the news? I wouldn't touch anything to do with Elon Musk with a 10-foot pole given how deranged he is. Good luck with long-term support for your Tesla that has inherent build quality issues from the get-go.

        • What car would you recommend?

  • +2

WTF the auto features are paid add-ons 🤣🤣🤣🤣

    • +1

      Worse in Volvo/ Polestar
