BOXING10

Been struggling to find an affordable 4K Blu-ray player after my Harry Potter collection arrived from this deal.

Eventually found this deal which isn’t the cheapest of all time but pretty close. Price comes down to $171 delivered after applying code.

Hope this helps someone in the same boat.

no dolby vision might be a deal breaker for some, but otherwise - pretty good price for a 4k player

    • Only way to get cheaper 4k player than this is to buy someone's old Xbox One S on eBay with 20 games, and sell all the games.

      • +2

You mean sell the games so you can buy a 4k player?

    • BD drives for PC's can be found in many dumpsters!

      • +2

It's not that easy to watch on PC

        • I pulled mine out: When DVD's came out it took me a day or so to copy them. With BD it took 3 minutes.
Pulled drive out years ago, too lazy to dump it. Then Harry Pothead is of no interest to me!

    • +1

Yeah I think this is the one I have. It’s good, does the job.

I wondered what you get for hundreds more, other than Dolby Vision. Mine has a fairly slow, somewhat clunky interface. It’s also takes a while to startup, not something you expect from a dvd or bluray player, but then again everything has Android these days, meaning start up is slow. It’s had a feature to stay on in a low power state which they call fast start. It does Amazon Prime but it’s slow to move through the menus. I guess you’d get a faster processor and better software with a more expensive unit.

Overall I’d recommend it for the price.

best Blu-ray player is Xbox X. plays games, too!

    • -1

Not sure why you are downvoted for the truth, I guess because a One X is more expensive than this?

I think you might get a used S for under 200 nowadays though.

      • +14

He is downvoted because it isn't the truth.

Xbox Series X is A bluray player. It is not the best bluray player in any way other than the fact that is can also play Xbox games.

"Neither of the latest Sony and Microsoft consoles are exactly great as 4K Blu-ray movie players. They both come up short versus even some very affordable standalone players in both feature and performance terms. " - WhatHifi

        • This is a nasty surprise if (like most people) you haven't been researching 4k disc players.

I had of course assumed it was like 1080p blu-rays (and DVDs, and everything else) where every player was basically just as good as any other. (Why wouldn't they be?)

Get your act together MS and Sony.

it's very hard to face the truth sometimes..

Quality of AV is much higher compared to streaming.

      • +11

if you have favourite movies then owning them on disc isnt unusual

eg. godfather series, star wars, indiana jones, aliens, terminator the list goes on

if i'm watching a piece of shit romcom w/ ryan reynolds etc. then stream that shit

also music BR or live concert BR is excellent way to experience music often not available on any other format

      • Thanks to our over controlling PM we have 4th world internet.

        • Do we? I get 1000/250.

          • @jakeh87: How much and who through? I couldn't find a 250 up.

            • @joshx: $110 a month through MyRepublic

          • -3

@jakeh87: I keep getting junk mail from Ausiebroadband: Price increase from A$79 inc GST to AUD 799 plus GST!!!
Then my 5G was 600MBits til Albo came and now I got 10% of what I pay for!

Frustratingly enough, streaming video quality is still WAY below 4k blu-ray, and often old 1080p Blu-ray too.

Instantly noticeable on projectors, very big screen LCDs, and big screen OLEDs.

And for audio quality, the gap is even wider.

If you spent 2 grand on a TV and only ever stream, about a grand was wasted.

I still mostly stream for the cost/convenience, but facts are facts, and 4k blu ray is amazing on a decent setup.

      • -3

If you spent 2 grand on a TV and only ever stream, about a grand was wasted.

What an elitist opinion, a 2k Tv has dimming zones, supports dolby vision ,has faster processor etc. You can still see a difference, even on Netflix (even more if you game)

        • +10

I think their point was more to state that the TV is not being used to its full potential if you only stream, not that you don't still benefit from some of the additional features of a more expensive TV.

          • +1

@4slime: That does not mean a grand was wasted. That's an ignorant way to put it.

If your $60,000 car can do 220km/h but you only drive up to 110km/h did you waste $40,000 because a $20,000 MG can do 110km/h?

            • +9

@NoApostrophePlurals: If the only difference between a 60k car and 20k car is speed, then yes that’s wasted.

              • @GeneralSkunk: That will never be the case, just like two TVs will never only have a difference of resolution.

We'll… Unless you're modifying a stock car into a racecar, which is racecar backwards.

      • And terrestrial tv is even worse than that but it's what most people watch.

    • +9

A remux (unmodified video and audio from the disc without the extras) of Dune in 4K is 86.11 GB
      That's a bitrate of 59.8 Mb/s

The HBO Max streaming version was 20.32 GB
      That's a bitrate of 17.9 Mb/s

      That's quality, baby!

      Edit:
To jump off of GandalfTheCheap's point about streaming often being worse than standard bluray,

The remux of the Dune bluray is 37.22 GB
      Bitrate is 22.8 Mb/s

      • +1

Its like the CD mp3 debate some people can't really notice a difference.

        • +2

Except loads of people really are buying "audiophile headphones" (pricey TVs) and then only listening to "96kbps MP3" (streaming video) on them.

They can't tell the difference, but that doesn't mean it's not there, nor that they made a good decision spending double the money for nothing.

    • +4

You can understand people using vinyl despite it being about as good as cassette, but you can’t understand people using discs which are better quality than streaming?

      • Depending on the pressing/mastering of a particular album, vinyl can sound better than lossless digital files. But I get your point for sure.

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/285024906947. $198.55 with code OFFTOP5. Lists new for $325

I've had good luck with Sony refurbs. One TV and four Blu-Ray players, all have been like new.

Noob question, but do most/all 4k standalone players support both Atmos and DTS:X? And will they both work via eARC?

Recently had some pain sorting out the best way to play 4k discs from an Xbox One X and the best way to get no stutter, DTS:X compatibility and Atmos was to plug directly into the soundbar and allowing device to "decode audio".

Apparently the LG C2 doesn't support DTS sound so was hitting some issues. If I didn't allow the device to decode audio, certain 4k blu rays would visually judder (apparently this is a bitstream bottle-neck type problem?).

    • +3

Only downside with that player is that you have to manually toggle Dolby Vision on and off (depending on what your 4K disc has). Not a huge deal but worth noting.

    • Cheers buddy good find! 🍻

You can get $15 off with that recently targetted eBay offer as well (go into the eBay summary page to check).

  • Thank you, since both my dvd player and xbox recently died, I needed to replace them. Not top of the line, but more than enough for me.

  • +1

Why are we giving time to people who clearly aren't interested in the deal?

If they don't understand the benefits of a dedicated 4k player and physical media, well, bad luck for them.

Buying a LG G3 and running streaming only as your best source is a tremendous waste IMHO. Let alone all the people still watching FTA eeeeewww

    • +6

Eh, it doesn't cost much to type a sentence and educate a few hundred people.

And the more people experience and appreciate high bitrate audio video, the longer 4k blu-rays will stay around, and the sooner we'll get proper full-quality high-bitrate options from streaming services.

      • Yeah, but many of them are just stupid trolls.

A second hand UB420 is a much better buy for the same dollars, includes the HCX chip for HDR mapping

  • +2

Bought this unit new a few years ago so i could play both 4k and 3d blurays on my projector. Got it chipped for multi-region bluray, so went with the cheaper model, knowing i was going to spend another $200. Reviews for rhis unit say its great because it has everyrhing from the bigger brother 420 except the hcx chip. Still does some HDR i think. I also got 6 pairs of 3d glasses and just introduced my kids to avatar in 3d.

  • +1

Besides supporting HDR10+, is there any benefit of buying this over already having an Xbox X hooked up to a Samsung s95?

    • Not that I know of.

    Just got this email:

Due to the high influx of orders received for the Panasonic DP-UB150 4K Bluray Player in the last 24 hours (63 orders), there will be a delay in shipping your order as we will need to acquire more stock. We had 22 units available in stock and these were shipped based on a first in first served basis.

Not sure how I managed to miss out considering I ordered before posting here. I would be interested to hear if anyone’s orders get shipped.

    • Ouch that's not fair for you. Hopefully won't take long.
