Luxury SUV with 1 tonne payload for asset write off purposes

I have done a bunch of googling but I figured I might toss it to the wolves here see if anyone knows of any luxury SUVs that fall under the 1 tonne payload category.

Not looking for a Ute/tray. From what I can tell, doesn’t look like there are.

Thanks for any input.

    Mercedes g63

I believe it needs to be under 150k.

Thank you for the input but that’s definitely not a family / kids SUV.
More of a Russian oligarch kind of daily lol.

not a family / kids SUV.

You should come to Bankstown or Bardwell Park.

        • Don’t they pay for cars with suitcases full of green notes there? Lol

I believe it needs to be under 150k.

Not sure if I understand this completely but the ATO site appears to state that the limit for a passenger vehicle with a payload < 1,000kg (and <9 passengers) is $59,136. You need to purchase a vehicle with more than a 1,000kg payload to move up to the $150,000 cap.

        https://www.ato.gov.au/Business/Depreciation-and-capital-exp…

A car limit applies to the cost of passenger vehicles (except a motorcycle or similar vehicle) designed to carry a load less than one tonne and fewer than 9 passengers.
…the car limit is $59,136 for the 2020–21 income tax year.

        • That's how I understood it also :)

So where do you expect to put the 1 tonne of "stuff" you need to carry in a SUV? (not a traditional 4WD)

  • I know it’s tricky which is why I’m asking, perhaps there are a few nice ones that might fit the requirements.

I know a lot of people drive those huge ass Ram’s that don’t need them, it’s just a nice car that fits into the tax benefits.

The poorly thought out liberal instant asset writeoff lives on!

  • Amarok thats about it.

    Order an F150 lightning.

  • Buy a Hilux or two. Sell them in 2 years, profit.

  • The Defenders seem to get the closest to 1t but no you’ll have to look at something like a Ranger

  • Yeah that’s what I thought.
It’s got to have a 1 tonne payload or 9 seats.

I was hoping Mercedes, BMW, Audi, Porsche or any luxury brands might meet the requirements. I have done quite a comprehensive search however I was hoping the team might have some suggestions.

Might be a dead idea :)

  • Won't be this financial year or maybe the next you'll be driving out with this new car.
Isuzu told me Christmas now they're saying June. if they're saying June now I'm thinking possibly early 2024

Unlikely to find anything with 1tonne payload that isn’t a van or ute. They down spec the passenger vehicles payload so the ride comfort is acceptable

Does Merc still rebadge the Navara as their dual cab?

    • +1

Mercedes Nissan ceased making that ute nearly 3 years ago.

      It was a failure.

      • Plus you’d get more ‘luxury’ from the návara at any price point compared to the mercvara.

    • Drove one of those. Absolutely horrible vehicle, it was laughable how underpowered and cheap it felt

There’s nothing as far as I’m aware.

Even Landcrusiers and Patrols have a payload of about 800kg off the top of my head.

Your best bet would be to get the 4WD or SUV you want and then put a GVM upgrade kit on it. You’re probably going to lose ride comfort though (I mean not by much but there’s a trade off).

Before you do any of this just make sure you can upgrade the GVM of car you want with a reputable suspension shop

    • Latest model 70 series has an increased payload. But.. the Toyota order books are closed and there is a few years waiting list…

Freightliner or Kenworth? Will carry more than a tonne, with room for the whole family and can definitely write them off on tax…

I remember on Reddit I saw a semi rear cab with this awesome gaming room setup.

A rig within a rig you could say.

Don’t give those school mums that have an obsession for land barges any ideas.

      • +5

We have a mom-off going on at my daughters school at the moment. It's an arms race over who can be the besterest mom evera!! And it is being fought with their husbands money to buy the biggest and besterest mom-barge they can get their hands on.

It started out with Prados… then moved up to LandCruisers until some mom bought in a brand new sparkly LandCruiser 300GR… It got bumped up to Range Rovers, Porsche and now Audi until a super mega-mom arrived in a Dodge Ram 1500… That sparked another mom to get a Ram 3500… Then… the Giga-mom turned up one day… with her 3 kids, (all under 6yo, mind you), sporting a brand new… LDV Deliver 9. She even has the hide to park it in the bus zone to unload her only child at school (a kindy kid at that).

I love new car show off day at the school… "OMG Becky, that new car's like totes amazeballs, your kids are so lucky to have a mom that loves them as much as you do with their safety…"

Cant wait to see what the new year has in store for crazy new "Christmas break" cars coming out…

        • +4

Go Giga-Mom, bringing a battleship to a gun fight!

        • +1

But why an LDV of all things? I thought it had to be both grotesquely large and obscenely priced to win the war of the sub-par personality and questionable IQ?

Now an Iveco 4x4 on 38” tyres would be a head turner.

          • @mapax: It seems to be about who can bring the "biggest" vehicle and not necessarily the most expensive. It's about being the most "mom-est" of all the moms

            • @pegaxs: That’s such a foreign concept at my nieces school it’s almost wholesome.

              • +5

@mapax: Where I live, it’s just full of cashed up bogans or single mums with cashed up bogan ex’s/borfriends…

There is nothing wholesome about where my daughter goes to school. It’s a weird mix of very very low socioeconomic and very very high. It’s not weird to see a rusted out $5 worn out bicycle parked next to a $4,000 mountain bike with all the trimmings. Kids coming to school wearing $400 sneakers while some kids have the arse worn out of their clothes and barely wearable shoes on their feet.

Last year, only about 70~75% of the kids could afford the yr 6 shirts, so I tried to organise some of the other parents to chip in to get the kids that can’t afford them their shirts… 2 families said they would pitch in. Then word got around that some kids were getting free shirts, so parents started pulling their paid orders thinking they would rather a “free” shirt… it wasn’t free. The people that drive these Range Rovers, Audi and Dodge Rams wouldn’t pitch in $5 extra for a shirt to help the kids that literally had nothing.

I get to see the worst of people from both ends.

                • @pegaxs: That’s sad and probably worse than my nieces school. At least there a lot of the parents would be chipping in even if it was just for keeping up appearances.

  • Dual cab light truck, Hino or similar.
You’ll be somewhat uncomfortable, but basking in the warm glow of tax saved I guess….

  • The answer is they don't exist. You're missing the part of the formula that excludes vehicles designed principally to carry passengers and some other factors as laid out in ATO Taxationd Determination 94/19. Luxury SUVs are unlikely by definition to be considered primarily load carrying vehicles

Also keep in mind the immediate deduction is great this year, but means you pay tax on 100% of the sale value in the year you sell

    • gst on sale price isnt really an issue

its something you should have factored into be able to claim interest on the car and if you keep the car for 4-5yrs then the value of the car should be under 50% of the purchase price

  • Even dual cab utes struggle to get 1 ton payload without a gvm upgrade.
